Give the castles their own day in your Khiva stay
These are archaeological sites in Karakalpakstan, associated with ancient Khorezm. They offer a different day from walking through Ichan Kala: time in a vehicle, earthen ruins and outdoor stops. Nuratau Travel publishes a day excursion starting and ending in Khiva, which establishes the practical format; its particular departure, included services and extra fourth stop belong to that operator’s offer.
If you have only one full day in the city, our recommendation is to use the Khiva city plan first. Add a separate day for the castles if the archaeology interests you. An Aral Sea trip needs its own route decision: a castles excursion with a return to Khiva does not include Muynak or the shoreline.

What changes from one fortress to the next
Ayaz-kala / Ayozqal’a: a group of three fortresses, with Ayaz 1 on the hill. Its mud-brick defences include towers, galleries and arrow slits, according to the regional Uzbek account. Choose it for the relationship between the walls and the landscape. Ask which part of the group your visit covers; “Ayaz-kala” does not automatically mean walking around all three.
Toprak-kala / Tuproqqal’a: a settlement and palace complex. The regional portal describes a 500 × 350 metre settlement with a nine-metre-wide central street. The national tourism portal identifies a royal residence of the second–third centuries CE and records finds including sculpture, paintings and ancient Khorezmian writings. A guide can help connect the visible layout with that history; the list of finds is not an inventory of objects currently displayed on site.
Kyzyl-kala / Qizilqal’a: a more compact stop near Toprak. The regional portal gives a plan of roughly 65 × 63 metres, places it about 1.3 kilometres from the Toprak complex, and describes construction in the first–fourth centuries CE followed by rebuilding in the twelfth–thirteenth centuries. It adds a smaller fortified enclosure to the larger settings at the other two.

Two stops or three?
Our suggested first-visit choices below weigh time at the sites against the number of stops. They are route recommendations, not named tour products.

Discuss time at the sites before departure
A possible order is Khiva → Ayaz-kala → Toprak-kala → Kyzyl-kala → Khiva, putting the hill visit earlier and keeping the neighbouring final two sites together. Treat that as a proposal for the driver to check against current access, weather and the meal stop.
The allowances below are our planning estimates for a first visit. They include walking from the agreed parking point and looking around, but exclude all driving, lunch and waiting. They are not measured visit times or a timetable.

Book the complete journey and the guiding you need
Ask for an itemised quote for a return excursion with a named pickup point, all chosen stops, waiting time and a final drop-off. A ride to the first fortress leaves the remaining road legs unresolved. If you want to finish in Urgench or Nukus, request that route explicitly and include your luggage.
A four-wheel-drive vehicle is not an automatic requirement for every castles excursion: Nuratau Travel lists sedans and minibuses for its route. The provider should confirm a suitable vehicle for the chosen sites, final approach roads, party size and date. Request air conditioning and the number of passenger seats.
Clarify whether the quote includes a driver, a guide or both, and in which language. Published offers differ: Jahongir Travel treats an English-speaking guide as an optional addition. Driving the route and explaining the archaeology are separate tasks.

Make the ascent and surfaces part of the decision
The national Uzbek description of Ayaz-kala places the main fortress above the surrounding desert. A current operator description also identifies uneven ground and an ascent at Ayaz. Do not judge the walk from the number of monuments alone.
If stairs, slopes or balance are a concern, ask for the parking-to-viewpoint route, its surface and the easiest way back. Arrange where someone can wait comfortably while others climb. A general “easy tour” label does not answer those questions.
- Wear shoes with grip and bring sun protection and drinking water.
- Ask which paths are currently open, especially after rain or during conservation work.
- Use the visitor route. Do not climb fragile walls, enter closed spaces or move pottery fragments for a photograph.
- With children, discuss the ascent and supervision before arrival; a short visit can be the better choice.

Use the forecast to adjust the number and length of stops
For date selection, start with spring or autumn and then check the specific day. Neither season guarantees comfortable conditions. Uzhydromet identifies July as Uzbekistan’s hottest month in climatic terms; its July 2026 review documents severe heat, including an earlier onset in the northwest. That is regional context, not a temperature reading at these ruins.
In hot conditions, discuss an earlier departure, shorter outdoor visits and a confirmed cool place for a break. Keep the third fortress optional. For a cold or windy date, bring suitable layers and agree a shorter version if needed. Check Uzhydromet’s current forecasts and warnings for the excursion area shortly before travel.

Confirm arrangements for lunch, toilets and tickets
Ask for the proposed lunch location and whether it will be operating on your date. If a yurt-camp lunch is suggested, confirm the booking, menu, dietary needs and payment method. A camp mentioned in a destination article does not establish that a meal will be available when you arrive.
Request the toilet stops and their facilities, drinking-water provision, current admission charges and any separate guide or photography charges. Have the provider distinguish what is included, payable on site or still unconfirmed. Bring the agreed cash amount after those details are settled.

Send your date, Khiva hotel or pickup point, party size, preferred two or three stops, guide language and any walking limits. Add the required return time and details of any onward departure. For a longer journey, compare the excursion against your 14-day Uzbekistan route. Set aside a full day during your stay in Khiva rather than squeezing the castles into an unallocated transfer.
Common questions
Can I visit the desert castles in a day from Khiva?
Yes, a return excursion is a published operator format. Reserve the day and ask for a complete plan covering the chosen sites, driving, waiting, lunch and drop-off. A headline duration alone is not a return guarantee.
Which two castles should I choose?
For a first visit, our recommendation is Ayaz-kala and Toprak-kala for different settings. If uphill walking is a concern, ask about an adapted plan using Toprak and Kyzyl, with a lower viewpoint at Ayaz only if suitable.
Does a three-castle tour visit all three parts of Ayaz-kala?
Check the names in the itinerary. In this guide, three stops means Ayaz-kala, Toprak-kala and Kyzyl-kala. The extent of the walk within Ayaz must be agreed separately.
Do I need a 4×4 or an archaeological guide?
Neither is automatically included or required by the trip’s name. Confirm the vehicle for the actual access roads and your group. Add a guide if you want the ruins interpreted, and agree the language and fee.
Can I combine the castles with an evening train or flight?
Only after checking the full route against the departure time, station or airport, luggage arrangements and a buffer. Agree in advance that the excursion can be shortened. Staying in Khiva that night gives you more flexibility.
Is lunch at Ayaz-kala included?
It depends on the offer. Ask for a named meal stop and written inclusions; arrange an alternative if the proposed kitchen cannot confirm service on your date.
