Uzbekistan routes: trains, roads and borders in one table

Trains link the four main cities faster than the road

The railway is the default for the classic route. On every leg between Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva the fastest train beats a car by hours: 2 h 13 min against about 4 h 45 min to Samarkand, and 3 h 28 min against about 5 h 40 min from Bukhara to Khiva. The table gives the fastest service on each route, the lowest fare the railway showed and the page with the full timetable. Times, fares and seats come from the railway's booking search for trains in October and November 2026.

Four train names cover almost every trip. Afrosiyob is the Talgo high-speed train: five departures a day from Tashkent between 06:33 and 19:48, three of them continuing to Bukhara, one running to Qarshi, and a separate Sunday train to Shahrisabz. The Jaloliddin Manguberdi is a Hyundai Rotem electric train, not an Afrosiyob: it leaves Tashkent at 07:00 every day except Sunday, stops at Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench, and reaches Khiva at 14:42. Sharq and Nasaf are slower seated day trains, about an hour longer to Samarkand and about a third cheaper. Trains with berths run overnight to Khiva, Nukus and Termez, and by day from Tashkent to the Fergana Valley.

Class changes the seat, not the journey time. Under the tariff in force since 1 February 2026, Afrosiyob fares from Tashkent run from 311,000 som in economy to 709,000 som in VIP for Samarkand, and from 509,000 to 1,138,000 som for Bukhara. Every Manguberdi departure seen in the booking search sold economy plus either business or VIP; the whole Tashkent–Khiva run costs 780,000, 1,006,000 or 1,815,000 som. Tashkent has two stations, and the train decides which one you need. The Afrosiyob, the Manguberdi, Sharq, Nasaf, the Andijan electric train and the Talgo to Almaty use Tashkent Central (Toshkent Markaziy, also called North or Shimoliy). The night trains to Khiva, Nukus and Termez leave from Tashkent South (Toshkent Janubiy). In Bukhara, trains stop at Buxoro-1 in Kogon, 15–20 minutes by taxi or bus from the old town; Khiva's station is about 1.2 km in a straight line from the east gate of Ichan-Kala. Give drivers the station name printed on the ticket, not the city.

Some trains skip days, and the gaps shape the itinerary. The Manguberdi does not leave Tashkent on Sundays or Khiva on Mondays. Train 706 from Bukhara to Khiva does not run on Mondays, and its return, 707, skips Tuesdays. The Shahrisabz Afrosiyob runs on Sundays only in the autumn 2026 timetable, and the weekly train to Dushanbe leaves on Tuesdays. Fix these legs first, then book hotels around them.

Night trains save a hotel night and cost less than flying. An open berth from Tashkent to Nukus costs 258,610 som, against 398,610 som for the cheapest flight seen for 1 November, and train 054 arrives at 08:18 with the day ahead. The railway sells three kinds of berth: platskart is an open-plan sleeping car, kupe a four-berth compartment and SV a two-berth compartment. Travelling alone, you share a kupe with three strangers; buying both places in an SV gives you the compartment to yourself.

A timetable runs from station to station, so plan the day from hotel to hotel. Add the ride to the right station, the entrance check and the transfer at the far end: the railway's terms ask passengers to show the ticket and the matching passport at the station checkpoint at least 30 minutes before departure. Two changes are coming. A high-speed service from Tashkent to Nukus is due from March 2027 and should cut the trip from 16 hours to 7, according to a presidential meeting reported on 19 September 2026. Afrosiyob fares last rose by 15% on 1 February 2026, and the winter timetable last changed on 14 December 2025, so look up times again for travel after mid-December.

Booking opens 60 days ahead, and the fast trains go first

Uzbek trains are sold on the railway's own site, eticket.uzrailpass.uz, and in its UzRail app; the old address eticket.railway.uz redirects there. Five rules cover most bookings. The full purchase, step by step, is in Afrosiyob and tickets.

• Sales open 60 days before departure at 10:00 local time at the train's origin station.
• Each ticket carries one passenger's passport details. Pay within the 10-minute timer by Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay or a local card, then download the e-ticket with its 14-digit number.
• On 26 September 2026, every Afrosiyob and the Manguberdi between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara showed no seats for 8 and 13 October, while the evening Sharq at 20:32 and the night trains still had plenty; for 18 and 24 November, three morning Afrosiyob trains had 55–123 seats each.
• A refund costs 15,000 som per seat more than 24 hours before departure; within 24 hours the railway also keeps half the seat component of the fare, and within 6 hours all of it. Dates cannot be changed.
• Train 302 to Dushanbe is sold only at station ticket offices. Kazakh trains, including the Talgo to Almaty, go on sale on bilet.railways.kz 45 days ahead at 07:00.

A car pays off for stops, or where no train runs

No road leg between the main cities beats the fast train on time. Tashkent to Samarkand is about 285 km, or 4 h 45 min at the wheel on our OpenStreetMap routing, against 2 h 13 min by Afrosiyob; Bukhara to Khiva is about 457 km and 5 h 40 min before stops, against 3 h 28 min by Manguberdi. A private car earns its price on three kinds of day: legs without a useful train, days with stops on the way, and dates when the trains are full.

The stops are the main reason to drive. Between Samarkand and Bukhara the road passes the portal of the Raboti Malik caravanserai and the potters of Gijduvan. Between Bukhara and Khiva a detour reaches the desert castles of Toprak-Kala and Ayaz-Kala near Buston, which our Khiva guide plans as a day trip of their own. On the drive from Khiva to Nukus, the Chilpik dakhma stands beside the road 43 km south of the city.

Per-car prices depend on the route, the car and the stops, so compare written quotes. Ask for one price per car for your exact route, with pickup and drop-off addresses, the named stops, waiting time, luggage space and any child seat. A price per seat and a price for the whole car are different things; settle which one you are being quoted before the bags go in.

Shared taxis run on the main roads, leave when full and charge a price agreed on the spot, so settle per seat or per car before you set off. Long-distance buses leave the Tashkent bus station at Olmazor metro; buy at the counters with your passport or on avtoticket.uz. Their fares are in the table. A night-train berth to Bukhara costs less than the bus, 177,990 som against 195,000 som, and lets you lie down.

One mountain road needs a winter plan. The Takhtakaracha pass between Samarkand and Shahrisabz, about 90 km and 2 hours each way, has been closed to buses and minibuses with more than 8 passenger seats since 26 March 2025 and shuts in snow, as on 16 January 2026; the way round via Karshi is about 270 km. For a day out of Tashkent, the drive to Chimgan and Charvak takes 1.5–2 hours.

Fly to the far west and south; take the train to Samarkand and Bukhara

Flying saves the most time where the train takes a day or a night. Urgench (for Khiva), Nukus and Termez are 1 h 25 min to 1 h 40 min from Tashkent in the air, against 7 h 12 min to 16 h 18 min by rail. To Samarkand and Bukhara the flight is shorter in the air but not door to door: add the ride to the airport, check-in and the transfer at the far end, and the 2 h 13 min Afrosiyob to Samarkand wins.

Centrum Air and Uzbekistan Airways fly most domestic routes, with Qanot Sharq also on Termez. Bukhara is served mainly by the ATR 72 turboprops of Uzbekistan Helicopters, about four flights a day at 1 h 30 min, plus an Uzbekistan Airways jet on Fridays. Centrum Air's Samarkand flight leaves between 23:55 and 03:45, depending on the date, and was the cheapest listed: 198,367 som for a 01:25 departure on 30 September. Schedules change with the winter season from 25 October.

Arriving from abroad and flying on, plan a terminal change. In Tashkent, international flights use Terminal 2 and domestic flights Terminal 3, and Uzbekistan Airways asks passengers entering the country to reclaim their bags and check them in again for the domestic flight, even on one ticket. Its domestic check-in closes 30 minutes before departure.

Urgench and Samarkand have international flights of their own, so a trip can finish in the west without a return to Tashkent. Uzbekistan Airways and Turkish Airlines fly Urgench–Istanbul, and Samarkand's airport listed 18 airlines and 19 destinations for summer 2026. From Urgench airport to Khiva is 35 km: a taxi takes 35–45 minutes, and a train leaves the airport once a day at 08:40 for Khiva at 09:22, for 25,000 som.

Winter fog is the domestic-flight risk. On 24 December 2025 fog stopped Bukhara, Urgench and Termez airports for several hours and sent arriving flights to Samarkand and Nukus; on the night of 8–9 January 2026 visibility at Tashkent fell to 50 m. In December and January, take the train where one exists and keep a spare night before an international departure; the season is covered in Uzbekistan in winter.

Four crossings from Uzbekistan, each with one deciding fact

Trains cross into Kazakhstan every day and into Tajikistan once a week; Kyrgyzstan has no direct train. Each crossing below has one fact that decides the plan: a closed road, a post classed as bilateral, or a train sold out weeks ahead. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan keep the same clock (UTC+5); Bishkek is one hour ahead.

Almaty. The Talgo of the Kazakh railways runs daily: Tashkent Central at 14:41, Almaty-2 at 08:51 the next morning, with seats from 9,218 tenge (about $21) on the Kazakh site, where sales open 45 days ahead. Four airlines fly the route in about 1 h 30 min. The old road crossing at Gisht Kuprik has been closed for rebuilding since 5 February 2025, and its reopening was announced for July 2026, then September 2026, then the end of 2026; travellers cross at Navoi and Kaplanbek instead. A Kazakh e-visa is valid only at international airports, so its holders fly. Details: Tashkent to Almaty.

Bishkek. Uzbekistan Airways, Centrum Air, Qanot Sharq and Aero Nomad fly in 1 h 10 min to 1 h 25 min. The overnight bus leaves Tashkent at 18:00 and 19:00 for 350,000–465,000 som and crosses Kazakhstan, so it suits passports that are visa-free there (a Kazakh e-visa is valid only at airports); travellers in 2025 reported waits of up to about 7 hours at the Uzbek border. The third way crosses the Fergana Valley: train 730 to Andijan (07:20 → 11:42), the Dostuk crossing on foot, a night in Osh and a flight north. Details: Tashkent to Bishkek.

Dushanbe. From Samarkand the road runs through the Jartepa–Sarazm crossing and Penjikent: about 6–9 hours and about US$20 in seat fares at 2025 prices, with the last leg through the Anzob tunnel. Foreigners have crossed on foot, but the Uzbek customs list classes Jartepa as a bilateral post, so ask the Customs Committee (+998 55 502 76 00) before you build a trip on it. Train 302 leaves Samarkand on Tuesdays at 19:48 and reaches Dushanbe at 09:47, from 310,400 som. UK, Indian and Israeli passports need a Tajik visa before the border. Beyneu. In the far west the only way into Kazakhstan is the train, because the Daut-ota/Tazhen road crossing has been closed to people since 1 February 2025. Train 649 leaves Nukus at 19:43 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, reaches Beyneu at 07:43 and runs on to Mangistau for Aktau; an open berth costs 345,540 som or 12,047 tenge. Turkmenistan has no passenger train from Uzbekistan: domestic trains run to the border towns of Shavat in Khorezm and Alat in the Bukhara region, and you cross by road with a visa arranged in advance. Night trains from Tashkent to Moscow and Kazan cross Kazakhstan and sell seats to Turkestan, 00:32 → 09:05. Leaving Uzbekistan, cash above the equivalent of 100 million som must be declared; the rules are in cash limits and customs. Every crossing with its visa rules: Central Asia visas and borders.

We arrange the Uzbek side of each crossing, including station and border transfers, and Kyrgyzstan as part of an Uzbekistan trip. In Kazakhstan and Tajikistan we advise only, apart from a few cross-border day trips such as Shymkent from Tashkent and Penjikent with Sarazm from Samarkand.

In Tashkent, the metro and Yandex Go cover most trips

Tashkent's metro runs four lines from 05:00 to midnight, and a ride costs 1,700 som by card. The Chilonzor, O'zbekiston and Yunusobod lines keep those hours; the fourth line, named for the 30th anniversary of independence, opens at 06:00 and closes at 23:00. At peak times trains come every 2–3 minutes on the Chilonzor line and every 7–8 minutes on the fourth line.

Pay at the gate with an ATTO transport card, a contactless Humo, Visa or Mastercard card, or a QR code in the ATTO or Click app; a single-use QR ticket from a kiosk costs 3,000 som. City buses stopped taking cash on board on 1 January 2025. The city council put a rise of the card fare to 2,500 som from 1 October 2026 up for public discussion until 19 September. Photography inside the stations has been allowed since 2023, and the stations are worth it: Alisher Navoiy, with its interchange to Paxtakor, is one of the stops on our Tashkent day plan.

Yandex Go is the taxi app to install. It needs an Uzbek phone number that receives text messages, which a data-only travel eSIM does not give you; a local SIM or eSIM with a number does, as our SIM section explains. The app shows the fare for your order before you confirm, and it works outside the capital too: a traveller paid 12,000 som for a ride from his guesthouse to a Samarkand bus station in May 2025. Use app taxis or the official airport taxis, not cars that stop in the street.

At Tashkent airport, Yandex Go and five licensed taxi operators pick up from lane 1 outside arrivals. The official operators quote city fares from 50,000 som (December 2025) and allow 20 minutes of free waiting; buses 40 and 67 stop at the airport for 1,700 som by card. Outside Tashkent the last mile is a taxi ride, so plan it as its own leg. Samarkand station is a separate trip from Registan, Buxoro-1 sits in Kogon outside Bukhara, and Nukus station is about 5 km from the Savitsky Museum; the table gives the distances.
