Khiva in one or two days, and the desert fortresses

One ticket covers Ichan-Kala for two days

Ichan-Kala, Khiva's walled inner town, works on one combined ticket: 250,000 som for a foreign adult and 125,000 som, half price, for a child under 16, valid for two full days. Buy it at the booth outside Ota Darvoza, the west gate. It opens the museums and monuments inside the walls, among them Kalta Minor, Kunya Ark, Juma Mosque, Tosh Hovli, the Muhammad Amin Khan and Muhammad Rahim Khan madrasahs and the Islam Khoja ensemble. The two mausoleums are not included.

Four extras are sold separately: Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum (25,000–30,000 som), the small Sayid Allauddin Mausoleum (15,000 som), the climb up the Islam Khoja minaret (100,000 som) and the walk along the city walls (40,000 som). Taking all four, one adult spends about 435,000 som over two days. Two adults and a child under 16 pay 625,000 som for the combined tickets alone.

Older guides still quote 150,000 som for 48 hours. That figure is out of date: the ticket has cost 250,000 som since at least February 2026, and the museum-reserve's own website listed no tickets or prices on 27 September 2026. Budget 250,000 som per adult and keep the ticket with you on both days.

The same ticket pays for three shows every day: the Khan's Procession, a theatrical performance, from 10:00 to 11:00; a puppet show from 15:00 to 16:00; and a folklore concert from 16:00 to 17:00. With one day in town, plan the afternoon around the last two. The Voice of Khiva, an audio walk sold on iTicket, is a separate event: its listing says old-town admission is paid on top.

The free and discounted days that the museum-reserve announces are not for foreign visitors. Free entry in Museum Week (2–8 September) applies to local residents, and the 10% Navruz discount (21–23 March) to tourists from within Uzbekistan; everyone else pays the full 250,000 som.

Ichan-Kala's sights, with tickets and time needed

Everything inside Ichan-Kala is walkable: the walled town measures about 650 by 400 metres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. Start at Ota Darvoza, the main west gate, where the ticket booth is, with Kalta Minor just inside, and work east. UNESCO values the streets and houses as much as the monuments, so leave time for the lanes between visits. People live and work there: keep doorways clear, ask before photographing anyone and enter a courtyard only when invited.

Kalta Minor, the short, wide minaret faced in glazed tile, was never finished: work stopped in 1855, when Muhammad Amin Khan died. The story of an architect who fled before finishing it is legend, not record. Kunya Ark, the khans' citadel, held reception halls, a mint, mosques and living quarters. It went up in the late 17th century and was rebuilt in the early 19th; give it the longest block of your first morning.

Juma Mosque is dark and low. Its hall of wooden columns is lit only through two octagonal openings in the roof, so let your eyes adjust for a minute, then photograph the columns and the shafts of light rather than trying to fit the whole hall into one frame. Tosh Hovli, also written Tash Hauli, was built for Allakuli Khan in 1830–1838 and divides into private and ceremonial courtyards. Look for the blue-and-white tiles, the carved wooden columns and the round platform where a guest yurt was pitched.

Pahlavon Mahmud's shrine grew into the burial place of Khiva's rulers; the present mausoleum dates from 1810–1835 and needs its own ticket. It is still a place of pilgrimage: cover shoulders and knees and keep your voice down. Islam Khoja pairs a small madrasah with a tall minaret, both built in 1908–1910; the view from the top costs 100,000 som and a climb up the inner stairs. Nurullaboy Palace stands outside the walls and shows a different kind of palace after Tosh Hovli: parquet floors, painted ceilings and porcelain stoves.

For a museum or a workshop, choose by subject: the history of the khans in the Muhammad Rahim Khan II Madrasah, music history at Qozikalon, wood carving at Khojash Mahram and silk-carpet weaving at Yakubboy Khoja. One of them fills a 45–60 minute slot on the second day.

Khiva in one or two days, hour by hour

Decide the number of full days first, then book the nights. Arriving the evening before and leaving the morning after, one full day needs 2 hotel nights, two days need 3, and two city days plus the fortresses need 4. With only two days, the fortress trip replaces the second city day.

One day covers the four core visits: Kalta Minor, Kunya Ark, Juma Mosque and Tosh Hovli, plus one of the shows. A second day adds Pahlavon Mahmud, Islam Khoja and its minaret, a workshop, Nurullaboy and the walls at an easy pace, and on that day you pay only for the extras, because the combined ticket lasts two days. The Manguberdi arrives at 14:42: keep that first afternoon for a walk in the lanes and dinner, as it does not replace a full day.

Short on time? With half a day, keep Kalta Minor and choose two interiors by interest: Kunya Ark for the khans' court, Tosh Hovli for tilework, Juma Mosque for the wooden hall. At a slower pace, keep those and move the rest to day 2 rather than trading a rest for one more monument. The 14-day itinerary gives Khiva 3 nights: one city day, then a second city day or the fortresses.

From June to August Khiva's average high is 34–36 °C (Urgench station, 1991–2020), so climb the minaret and the walls before 11:00 and stay indoors from 13:00 to 15:00. In January the average high is 2.6 °C and the days are short: start at 09:00.

Inside the walls you get around on foot. The minaret and the walls are reached only by stairs; skip them and the visit is still complete. With a wheelchair or a pushchair, ask your hotel to describe the route from the point where the car stops to the door.

Getting in and out: Khiva station, Urgench airport, trains

Khiva has its own station, opened in 2018 and served by the Jaloliddin Manguberdi fast train from Tashkent. Get off at Khiva (Xiva), the last stop: Urgench, 20 minutes earlier on the line, is a separate city. The station is 1.2 km in a straight line from the east gate of Ichan-Kala and 1.6 km from Ota Darvoza, so with bags take the hotel's pickup or a taxi.

Book the Manguberdi as soon as sales open, 60 days ahead at 10:00 Tashkent time. On 24 September 2026 only 6 of the next 19 departures from Tashkent still had seats; eastbound, 13 of 19 did. There is no Manguberdi from Tashkent on Sundays or from Khiva on Mondays. Search the booking site by station, Tashkent to Xiva, not by train name: the Manguberdi is not an Afrosiyob and does not appear under that name. On Sundays, when it does not leave Tashkent, fly to Urgench or take the 07:30 Afrosiyob to Bukhara (arriving 11:39, 509,000 som in economy) and continue on train 706 at 15:45. Night train 056 leaves from Tashkent South, not Central, and takes 14 h 24 min: it saves a hotel night but costs half a day.

Services change at short notice. From 31 July to 10 August 2026 the railway ran the Manguberdi only as far as Urgench, with a free bus on to Khiva, and the ticket operator posts changes like this on its Telegram channel first.

Flying means landing at Urgench: about 24 direct flights a week link it with Tashkent, 1 h 30 min in the air. Airport train 7055 leaves at 08:40, so it suits only early-morning flights; its return, 7058, leaves Khiva at 21:00. Otherwise take a taxi for the 46 km: agree the fare before the bags go in, and give the driver your hotel's address, not just 'Khiva'.

Leaving, the 07:10 Manguberdi gets you to Bukhara by 10:38 and Samarkand by 12:41, with the afternoon free there. Nukus, the base for the Savitsky Museum and the Aral Sea, is about 200 km away by road (2 h 30 min to 3 h); see Nukus. The desert fortresses: Ayaz, Toprak and Kyzyl Kala in a day

The forts of ancient Khorezm stand in Ellikqala, 'fifty fortresses', a district of Karakalpakstan north-east of Khiva. Give them a day of their own, not an extra stop after Ichan-Kala: the loop Khiva → Ayaz Kala → Toprak Kala → Kyzyl Kala → Khiva is 243 km and about 4 h 30 min at the wheel on our OpenStreetMap calculation. With 2–3 hours at the sites and lunch, leave at 08:00 and expect to be back around 17:00.

Start at Ayaz Kala while it is cool: the main fort sits on a hill above the desert, and the path up is uneven. Toprak Kala is the stop for archaeology: a royal residence of the 2nd–3rd centuries AD, where excavations found sculpture, wall paintings and documents in the Khorezmian script. Kyzyl Kala, 4 km further on, is a short optional third stop.

Hire a car and driver for the whole loop with waiting time included, and settle the total price and the return time before you leave; no fixed rate is published. Tour operators run the loop in saloon cars and minibuses, so you do not need four-wheel drive. A driver is not a guide: if you want the ruins explained, book a guide separately and agree the language.

To stay out overnight, the yurt camp at Ayaz Kala lies 75 km (80 minutes) from Urgench. Its yurts sleep from 2 to 20 people, there are 2 shower rooms and 2 toilets, and the price includes full board cooked in a kitchen with three hearths. Camel rides are offered. The camp publishes no rate online, so ask for the price per person and the season when you book.

The sites are exposed to the sun. From June to August, when Khiva's average highs reach 34–36 °C, leave by 08:00 and keep Kyzyl Kala optional. In April, May, September and October, with average highs of 20–29 °C, all three forts fit into the day. In December and January, with highs of 2.6–4 °C, wind and early dusk set the pace: leave by 08:00 and bring warm layers. Carry cash in small notes: no fortress entry fee is published online.

Wear shoes with grip and bring sun protection and plenty of drinking water. Stay on the visitor paths: do not climb fragile mud-brick walls or pick up pottery shards for a photo. Ask the driver where the lunch and toilet stops are before you set off, and do not pair the fortresses with an evening train or flight: sleep in Khiva that night.

Where to stay: inside the walls or by a gate

Sleep inside Ichan-Kala or a few minutes' walk from a gate. The point of staying here is walking out to the sights at 09:00 and back to your room for the break between 13:00 and 15:00. Inside the walls, ask where the car stops and how far you will carry your bags.

For the 07:10 Manguberdi, a hotel by the east gate, Palvan Darvoza, is closest to the station, 1.2 km away in a straight line. Settle the pickup time and a packed breakfast with the hotel the evening before.

Before any early departure, ask when reception opens, who can carry bags down the stairs and where the driver will wait. For the 07:10 Manguberdi, plan to leave the hotel by about 06:30.

Winters are cold and summers hot: Khiva's average high is 2.6 °C in January and 35.8 °C in July, so ask about both heating and cooling when you book. Plan a night at the Ayaz Kala yurt camp for a date with no early train the next morning, since the camp is 106 km from Khiva.

What can go wrong in Khiva

Five things to plan around, with the numbers.

• The combined ticket (250,000 som) leaves out Pahlavon Mahmud (25,000–30,000 som), the Islam Khoja minaret climb (100,000 som) and the walls (40,000 som): with every extra, budget about 435,000 som per adult.
