Eight days in Kyrgyzstan: the lake loop, Song-Kul or a trek

Choose the trip by the night that matters most to you. The Issyk-Kul loop gives two nights on the north shore of the lake, a day in Karakol and a night in the Altyn-Arashan hot-spring valley. The Song-Kul version trades Karakol and the valley for two yurt nights on a summer pasture at 3,016 m. The trek version trades the lake for four days on foot over the Ala-Kul pass, at 3,860–3,900 m. Each fits into eight days and seven nights from Bishkek, and each works in July and August.

Sleep in Bishkek on the first and the last night, whichever you choose. The road back from Karakol is about 400 km and 6–7 hours, and from the north shore 4–5 hours, so a flight on the day of the drive leaves no margin. To add Song-Kul to the full loop rather than swap it in, allow about three more days: Bishkek, Kochkor, two nights at the lake, then back over the Kalmak-Ashuu pass and on to Tamchy on Issyk-Kul, 110 km from Kochkor.

With Uzbekistan, twelve days hold Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara by train, the flight to Bishkek, two lake nights and one in Karakol. The first half of September suits both countries: the Kyrgyz mountains are still open and the heat in the Uzbek cities is easing, so do Kyrgyzstan first. In spring reverse the order, because the high mountains and Song-Kul stay shut until June. Count each country's days separately: Uzbek visa-free periods restart at every border crossing, while Kyrgyz days add up within their 60-day window.

Book the Tashkent–Bishkek flight before the trains. About ten flights a week link the two capitals, so the flight day fixes the rest of the calendar. The day-by-day plan and its variants are on the 12-day Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan route.

Entry: no visa for most passports, 30 days in each 60

Most visitors need no visa. Kyrgyzstan's regulation on the stay of foreign citizens, Cabinet resolution No. 541, lets citizens of 55 countries stay 30 days in each 60-day period, among them all 27 EU states, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Norway. The 30-day limit has applied since 13 January 2026; before that it was 60 days in 120. Russians, Kazakhstanis, Belarusians and Armenians get 90 days in each 180; the foreign ministry's treaty list says 'no time limit' for them, but that describes the visa-free regime, and the regulation sets the 90 days. Uzbek citizens get 60 in 120. The table gives every group.

Days from separate visits add up. The count runs in calendar days from 00:01 on the day you cross, the state migration register keeps it, and your last exit closes the previous stay. Enter on 1 June, spend 20 days, fly to Tashkent and come back, and you have 10 days left before the 60-day window ends on 30 July. The regulation gives no worked example; that one is our reading of it.

Registration is the host's job, and a short trip rarely needs it. Since 23 September 2026 the 55 visa-free countries have 30 days before registration is due, as long as their stay, so a tourist who leaves on time never registers. Russians, Kazakhstanis, Belarusians and Armenians register if they stay past day 30. Passports missing from the resolution's list, Uzbek and Chinese among them, fall under the migration law's general rule of 5 working days. The hotel, hostel or landlord registers you at the address where you live, online or in person, after arrival and within the period; the state service Kyzmat refuses applications filed only three days before the deadline, and a registration lapses after 30 days or more abroad. Registration does not extend a stay: that takes a basis document such as a visa, residence permit, resident card or unified permit.

Overstaying costs a fine and your next visa-free entry. Fines are set in calculation units of 100 som: 55 units (5,500 som, about US$63) for up to a month over, rising to 200 units (20,000 som) after a year. Since 18 September 2026 a foreigner who overstayed is refused entry under the visa-free regime, so plan on a visa for the next trip. Leaving after an overstay takes an exit visa from the foreign ministry's consular department, which needs several days.

Passports on no list need a visa before travel. The e-visa portal issues tourist visas, type TS, for up to 30 days, single or multiple entry, in up to 5 working days or 2 with urgent processing, against a colour passport scan and a letter from the host tour company or your own application. Tourist visas are never issued inside the country. The portal gives no fixed fee: it depends on the category, type and period of the visa and is shown before you pay. E-visas are accepted at 12 posts, including Manas and Osh airports, Dostuk, Ak-Zhol and Chaldybar, but not at Karkara or at Issyk-Kul airport in Tamchy.

Have six months left on your passport after you leave, and use one passport for the whole trip: an e-visa belongs to the passport it was issued for, and registration goes on the passport you entered with. Adult Russian citizens can also enter on their internal passport, under an exchange of notes Kyrgyzstan ratified in summer 2026. Children travelling without their parents should carry a parental consent letter in Russian or Kyrgyz. Carry the passport or a notarised copy at all times, because police can detain you without ID.

Getting there: fly from Tashkent, or cross at Dostuk

Fly unless you want the Fergana Valley on the way. Four airlines fly Tashkent to Bishkek nonstop in 1 h 10–1 h 25: Uzbekistan Airways, with a 15:20 departure on most days, Centrum Air, Qanot Sharq on Fridays and Aero Nomad on Thursdays and Sundays. The Aero Nomad flight leaves at 22:00 and lands at 00:25, so arrange the pickup at Manas before you fly. On 24 September 2026 only Uzbekistan Airways and Centrum Air had dates listed after 25 October, when the winter schedule starts.

No train runs between Tashkent and Bishkek. The overnight bus leaves Tashkent's main bus station at 18:00 and 19:00 and crosses Kazakhstan, so it passes two road borders in one night; the second is Chaldybar, a Kyrgyz post open round the clock. Take it only on a passport that is visa-free in Kazakhstan. In 2025 trip reports the Uzbek border alone took from under 2 hours to about 7.

The Fergana Valley route avoids Kazakhstan. From 1 October 2026 train 730 leaves Tashkent at 07:20 and reaches Andijan at 11:42; from Andijan, minibuses run to Osh every 20 minutes in about 2 hours, through the Dostuk post, which the Kyrgyz Border Service lists as open 24/7. You walk across with your bags, sleep in Osh and fly on: the schedule for late September and October listed at least five Osh–Bishkek flights on most days, 35 minutes to an hour in the air.

From Almaty, bus 701 leaves Sayran bus station five times a day for 3,425 tenge and takes about 4 hours for 236 km; you walk through Korday and Ak-Zhol, open 24/7, with your bags. For Karakol, the eastern crossing at Kegen and Karkara skips Bishkek, and bus 424 leaves Sayran for Karakol daily at 10:00. The Border Service's website lists Karkara as open round the clock, but on 22 September 2026 its deputy head told parliament the post works 09:00–20:00, the hours the Kazakh side keeps. Plan a daytime crossing there, and not on an e-visa.

Summer 2026 also had direct charter flights from Tashkent to Tamchy, the Issyk-Kul airport, on Wednesdays from 15 July. They were sold with week-long packages, and none were listed on 24 September.

Money: the som, cards, cash and what a day costs

Kyrgyzstan pays in the som (KGS), a different currency from Uzbekistan's so'm. The National Bank's official rate for 27 September 2026 was 87.45 som to the US dollar and 99.62 to the euro, so 1,000 som is about US$11.40, and 1,000 Kazakh tenge was 198 som. The som is legal tender for every payment: on 23 September 2026 the National Bank reported a 13,000-som fine for a Bishkek company that refused it. Yurt camps and tour sellers often quote in dollars, so ask how they want to be paid before you book.

Change clean dollar or euro notes at a bank or an exchange office; worn notes get a lower rate. Bank cash desks usually handle som, tenge, roubles, dollars and euros, and exchange offices often pay better, but ask for the receipt they are obliged to issue. Bishkek's biggest cluster of exchange offices is around Abdrakhmanov and Moskovskaya streets. Cards work in Bishkek and fade out beyond it. Hotels, supermarkets, chain cafés in Bishkek and Osh, fuel stations and taxi apps take them; small guesthouses, markets, minibuses, souvenir stalls and mountain yurts rarely do, and villages not at all. Bishkek's city buses have taken no cash since 1 July 2026: tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Elcart card, scan a bank QR code or buy a Tulpar card, 17 som a ride. Most ATMs pay out only som, while Demir Bank, Bank Kompanion and Kyrgyzkommertsbank machines also give dollars. When a terminal offers to charge in your home currency, refuse: that conversion runs 3–7% worse than your own bank's rate.

Mir cards have not worked since 3 April 2024, when the operator of Kyrgyzstan's Elcart payment system stopped serving them: no payments, withdrawals or card transfers. In July 2026 the First Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet said the country was looking for alternatives, and UnionPay cards from Russian banks were refused by many terminals. Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard cards do not work abroad either, so travellers with Russian cards should bring cash; banks change roubles, at an official 1.03 som to the rouble on 27 September 2026.

Mind the border limits. Up to US$10,000 comes in without a declaration, but foreign citizens are barred from taking out more than US$5,000 in foreign cash, under a temporary ban in force since January 2023 that the State Customs Service restated in July 2025.

Prices are rising fast. Consumer prices were up 12.0% in the year to August 2026 and services 18.9% in the National Bank's second-quarter count, and the bank expects inflation of up to 15% by the end of 2026, so treat any price from 2025 as roughly 12% low.

Added up from the dated prices in the table, a summer day costs one person about 2,850–3,150 som (US$33–36) with a hostel bed, meals and one minibus ride, 3,950–5,450 som (US$45–62) sharing a private room and taking shared taxis, and 6,350–6,850 som (US$73–78) in a lakeside sanatorium with meals. The beds are Issyk-Kul's July 2026 rates. A solo traveller pays for the whole room, and a day without an intercity ride costs 400–1,500 som less. The Issyk-Kul loop comes to about 21,900–28,300 som (US$250–324) each for two sharing, before flights and the Altyn-Arashan night. These are our sums of public prices, not quotes.

When to go: late June to early September for the mountains

Choose the month by the trip. The high mountains open fully from late June to early September; Song-Kul's big yurt camps run from early June to late September but are certain only in July and August; the Issyk-Kul swimming season lasts from late June to late August; and Karakol's ski lifts ran from 18 November to 31 March in 2025–26. For mountains and the lake in one trip go in August; with the Uzbek cities as well, go in the first half of September.

Height sets the temperature more than the month. July afternoons average about 33 °C in Bishkek at 750 m, 23 °C in Karakol at 1,750 m and 16 °C at Song-Kul at 3,010 m, where nights stay near 8 °C. The table's temperatures are model averages for 2016–2025, not station records, and one trip needs clothes for all three.

The lake is warmest, +20…+24 °C, in the second half of July and in August. Early September still works for a swim, but late in the month the water falls below 20 °C: CAIAG's Balykchy station read 18.1 °C in the early hours of 27 September 2026. July and August also bring the fullest beaches and the highest room prices; in September both drop sharply.

September splits in two. Destination Karakol ends its trekking high season early in the month, many camps on the Ala-Kul trek close after 15 September, and Kyrgyzhydromet forecast snow in the high mountains for the nights of 24–27 September 2026, with frosts to −3 °C in Naryn region, where Song-Kul lies. Plan Song-Kul in the first half of the month with the camp booked; Bishkek, Karakol town and the lake shore stay fine all month.

In spring the high country is still shut: the Song-Kul road opens only in June, Ala-Kul lake stays frozen until June, and many passes above 3,500 m hold snow into late June. Spring suits Bishkek, Karakol town and its Sunday animal market without the summer crowds, and day walks in the lower valleys near Karakol and Jyrgalan. In 2026 the first nine days of January and of May were non-working days, so book transport early for those dates.

Winter is for skiing and short city stays. The Karakol ski base is 7 km from town at 2,300 m; its 2025–26 lifts ran from 18 November to 31 March, with a higher tariff from 31 December to 12 January, and no 2026–27 dates had been published by 27 September. Avalanches close the Bishkek–Osh road for hours: one at the Ala-Bel pass shut it from 06:50 to 11:30 on 11 March 2026. Bishkek's air is at its worst in the heating season, with about 120 days above the national norm between December 2024 and November 2025.

Seasonal transport follows the beach and is announced late. In 2026 the Bishkek–Balykchy train ran from 5 June to 13 September, daily from 26 June, and its timetable came out on 19 May; Almaty–Tamchy flights ran on Mondays and Fridays from 10 July; the North–South road via Kazarman opened on 1 June until November, from 06:00 to 20:00 only.

A few dates change crowds and opening days: Nooruz on 21 March, Independence Day on 31 August, and Orozo Ait and Kurman Ait, which move with the lunar calendar. The sixth World Nomad Games ran from 31 August to 6 September 2026 around Bishkek and Issyk-Kul, and no date for the seventh had been published. Where to go: Bishkek, Issyk-Kul, Karakol and Song-Kul

Most routes run east from Bishkek along the north shore of Issyk-Kul to Karakol, with Song-Kul as a detour south from Kochkor. The table gives the time each place needs; each guide carries its own prices, opening hours and transport.

Bishkek needs one full day with a night either side: Ala-Too Square, the National Historical Museum on the square (200 som; closed on Mondays and the last Friday of the month), Oak Park and the Fine Arts Museum. For a second day, choose Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret 71 km east, or Ala-Archa. Osh Bazaar's traders are moving to a new complex outside the city, and no closing date for the old site had been announced by September 2026.

Ala-Archa is a state natural park about 40 km south of the city. Since 1 May 2025 only electric cars are allowed past the checkpoint, so a taxi leaves you at the gate; entry has cost 250 som since 8 June 2026, and a cable car opened in February 2026 at 600 som return. The Ak-Sai waterfall is about 4 km each way from the alpine camp, and the Ratsek hut at 3,380 m is a hard full day.

Issyk-Kul is 182 km long and up to 668 m deep. Stay on the north shore around Cholpon-Ata or Tamchy for beaches, or near Bokonbaevo on the south shore for yurt camps, crafts and Skazka canyon; two nights in one base give one full lake day. Summer 2026 room prices, from 500 som for a bed to 18,200 som for a resort double, are in resorts and prices.

Karakol lies near the lake's east end, about 12 km inland, and is the base for the eastern valleys. Give it one full day: the Dungan Mosque of 1907–1910, the wooden Holy Trinity Church of 1893–1895, the history museum that reopened after rebuilding on 22 August 2026, and ashlan-fu, the town's cold noodle dish.

Altyn-Arashan is a hot-spring valley above Karakol, reached through Ak-Suu on foot, on horseback or by 4×4, with no public transport. Allow two days for one night: a 4×4 takes about 2 hours from Karakol, and the walk down to Ak-Suu is about 15 km and 4–5 hours. The four-day Ala-Kul trek ends in the same valley.

Song-Kul is a lake at 3,016 m in Naryn region, ringed by summer pastures and yurt camps, with no village or shop on the shore. Take a minibus to Kochkor, about 3 hours, and a hired car over the 3,446 m Kalmak-Ashuu pass; give it two nights and pack for frost. Beginners can also ride there: the classic horse trek from Kyzart, near Kochkor, takes 3 days over a 3,400 m pass, and a Kyzart operator charged one rider 21,360 som in September 2026. Getting around: marshrutkas, shared taxis and flights south

Buses and marshrutkas east to Issyk-Kul, Karakol and Kochkor leave the main Bishkek bus station at 1/1 Alma-Atinskaya Street, open 07:00–23:30: minibuses from 07:00 to 19:00, larger buses from 21:00. Buses west, to Talas and Tashkent, leave a temporary site near the planned Ak-Kula hippodrome, because the old Western bus station closed on 23 October 2024. Marshrutkas go when full, and in September Tezket had suspended online sales to Osh, Tashkent and Almaty until October 2026, so buy at the station.

Shared taxis are faster and cost about two and a half times the minibus: a seat from Bishkek to Issyk-Kul cost 1,000–1,500 som in July 2026, against 400–600 som by marshrutka. Between Osh and Bishkek a seat cost 2,000 som in a 7-seat van or 2,500 som in a car at the drivers' November 2025 tariff, for 10–13 hours on the road; in the south, seats are booked through Telegram groups, usually by your guesthouse the evening before.

For Osh and the south, fly: the schedule for late September and October listed at least five Bishkek–Osh flights on most days with Aero Nomad, Sky FRU, Comair and Avia Traffic, 35 minutes to an hour in the air, from 4,488 som. The road runs more than 670 km through the Too-Ashuu tunnel at 3,200 m; if you drive, go by day, because at 01:41 on 16 September 2026 a paid driver fell asleep in the Suusamyr valley and six people died. No passenger train links north and south.

From Issyk-Kul to the south without Bishkek, the new North–South road runs 433 km from Balykchy through Kochkor and Kazarman to Jalal-Abad, by car only, 06:00–20:00, until November. Summer adds the Bishkek–Balykchy train, 08:06 to 12:37 in 2026, for 150 som by card.

A car and driver has no published tariff. One dated example: a guesthouse transfer from Karakol to Jyrgalan, 60 km, costs 4,000–5,000 som per car, against 150–200 som a seat on minibus 331. Ask for a price per day, the waiting time, and who pays for the driver's meals and night; at night, the UK Foreign Office advises booked cars over taxis hailed in the street.

Safety: the roads and the mountains are the real risks

Kyrgyzstan is safe for most trips. On 24 September 2026 the US rated it Level 1 of 4, and neither the UK nor Germany advised against travel to any part of it; Canada asks for a high degree of caution nationwide because of violent crime. The one area singled out is the Tajik border in Batken region, where old mines and unexploded ordnance are a risk.

What visitors actually meet is roads, weather and petty crime. Travel between towns by day, check that the rear seat belts work, and book cars rather than hailing them. Pickpockets work Bishkek's bazaars, and people posing as police ask foreigners for 'fines': offer to walk to the police station and pay there. Offering a bribe is itself a crime, with up to 2 years in prison.

In the mountains the weather turns fast, snow falls at altitude even in summer, and the mountain rescue service is run by volunteers with limited equipment. The Emergencies Ministry asks trekkers to register a route 10 working days ahead and to report their return. Watch out

• New rules, old pages: registration changed on 23 September 2026 and the overstay rule on 18 September, while the Kyrgyz embassy page in the US still gives the old 60-day stay. Follow regulation No. 541.
• Karkara: the Border Service's website lists the post as open round the clock, but its deputy head said on 22 September 2026 that it works 09:00–20:00; it takes no e-visas and has no exchange office. Reach it by early afternoon.
• Cash away from Bishkek: minibuses, village guesthouses and yurt camps want som in cash, there is no ATM or shop at Song-Kul, and Mir and Russian-issued cards do not work anywhere.
• Cold at altitude: at Song-Kul the average July night is about 8 °C, frosts are common in June and September, and snow can fall in any month.
• Late timetables: the 2026 Balykchy train was announced on 19 May and the Tamchy flights in July, and on 24 September most airlines had not loaded Tashkent–Bishkek flights after 25 October. Do not build a plan on a 2027 service before it is announced.
• Night roads: the crash that killed six people in the Suusamyr valley at 01:41 on 16 September 2026 involved a paid driver who fell asleep. Travel by day.

Common questions
