Uzbekistan in 14 days: four cities at a slower pace

The route: 14 calendar days, 13 nights

Day 1 is your arrival date in Uzbekistan; day 14 is your departure date. A flight leaving home the evening before is outside this count. If you land before dawn and need a room immediately, ask whether you must reserve the preceding night as well.

The main plan uses four rail journeys and returns to the same departure city. Exact trains must fit your dates before the hotel sequence becomes a booking. Activities below are our proposed allocation, not a package, timetable or claim that every attraction is open daily.

Who should choose this two-week route?

Choose it if you want the four-city circuit and prefer two full days between most hotel moves. The extra time belongs mainly to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva; it is not an instruction to add a new region every morning. Three nights in each of those cities provide an arrival evening and two full days.

This is still a journey with four intercity moves. Tashkent to Samarkand, Samarkand to Bukhara, Bukhara to Khiva and Khiva back to Tashkent all need packing, station access and an arrival transfer. A short train ride does not create an entirely free sightseeing day.

If you have only a week, use the seven-day route through the first three cities. The ten-day itinerary reaches Khiva with fewer spare days. Choose fourteen days when extra museum time, slower mornings or a castle excursion matter more than minimising hotel nights.

Days 1–2: arrive, then explore Tashkent

On day 1, solve the practical arrival tasks before committing to a visit: reaching the accommodation, checking when the room is available and arranging the next day’s spending money. Our money guide explains cash, cards and exchange. If the arrival is late, dinner and sleep are enough for this day.

For day 2, start with Hazrat Imam in the old-city area, then travel to Chorsu. Keep the afternoon flexible: return to your accommodation, choose a museum whose current opening hours you have checked, or take a short walk near your hotel. Do not use an ambitious arrival-day checklist to compensate for a late flight. There is another Tashkent day at the end.

Day 3: Tashkent to Samarkand

Choose the actual train first, then plan the first visit around its arrival. Save the station named on the ticket and the accommodation’s drop-off address. Use our Tashkent–Samarkand guide for that leg and the booking walkthrough for the purchase process.

After check-in, Gur-e Amir is one possible first visit; the Samarkand inventory identifies it as the Timurid burial complex. If you arrive too late for admission, make day 3 an orientation evening and move the visit into day 4. Samarkand monument inventory

Stay in the same accommodation for three nights. This gives you a place to return between visits and avoids packing simply to change neighbourhoods.

Days 4–5: Samarkand without filling every hour

Give Registan a substantial part of day 4. It comprises the Ulugh Beg, Sherdor and Tilla-Kori madrasahs, so seeing the square from outside and visiting its buildings are different plans. Decide which interiors you want before adding another major site. Registan’s three madrasahs

On day 5, choose Shah-i-Zinda as the principal visit. This is a mausoleum ensemble with extensive tile decoration; treat it as a place of remembrance as well as architecture. Follow the rules displayed at the entrance. Shah-i-Zinda

For the rest of day 5, choose a theme. Afrasiab and the Ulugh Beg Observatory suit an interest in archaeology and astronomy: an official account of a museum visit identifies seventh-century murals at Afrasiab. A private guide can be useful for one focused museum or architectural session without accompanying the entire trip. Agree the specific sites, language and admission arrangements; use the independent-or-guided comparison to decide what help is worth booking.

Day 6: travel to Bukhara

Book Samarkand to Bukhara for day 6, keeping the departure station, arrival station and hotel transfer together in the plan. A hotel reservation alone does not establish how you will reach its entrance with luggage. Confirm the meeting point with any booked driver.

After check-in, use Lyabi Hauz for a first look at the city. The ensemble includes Kukeldash Madrasah, the Divanbegi madrasah and a khanqah. That is enough context for an arrival evening; the larger circuit can wait until day 7. Lyabi Hauz ensemble

If the train reaches Bukhara late, drop the evening visit. Nothing in the following two days requires you to finish a particular monument on arrival.

Days 7–8: central Bukhara and one deliberate extra

Use day 7 for Poi Kalon, the trading domes and the Ark. Poi Kalon brings together the minaret, Kalon Mosque and Mir-i-Arab Madrasah; check the access rules for each building rather than assuming a single admission grants entry everywhere. On day 8, choose between more city time and an excursion. Staying in Bukhara gives you room for the Samanid Mausoleum, a longer architectural visit or an unhurried return to the trading domes. If you choose a workshop, confirm that a demonstration or lesson is actually available and what the booking includes.

For the excursion option, Sitorai Mohi Khosa is the former country residence outside Bukhara, now described by the national tourism site as an museum of applied arts. Keep the palace and a full central-city circuit as alternatives. The point of the third Bukhara night is to make one of these days less crowded, not to fit two programmes into it.

Day 9: Bukhara to Khiva

Treat day 9 as a transfer day. Check the Bukhara–Khiva guide before locking this date: it contains the September 2026 announcement and its weekday exceptions. A numbered service running on several days does not establish that it runs on your day 9.

If the suitable train reaches Khiva in the evening, book the accommodation for that evening and tell the property your expected arrival. Keep your room confirmation, hotel pin and transfer instructions available offline. Plan dinner around the actual arrival rather than buying a timed sightseeing ticket for that night.

If there is no acceptable rail option, obtain a road-transfer quote with the hotel endpoints, vehicle, passengers, luggage and stops specified. Moving the travel date or reversing the circuit may work better than adding a long detour. The castle option below belongs to day 11 unless an alternative drive is separately planned and priced.

Day 10: a full day in Ichan Kala

Use the first full Khiva day for Ichan Kala. The official Khorezm route identifies Kunya Ark, Tosh Hovli Palace, Kalta Minor, Islam Khoja and Juma Mosque within this historic setting. Pick the interiors that interest you; do not translate a list of names into a promise to enter every building. Khiva monument names

For a focused architectural visit, Tosh Hovli offers decorated courtyards, iwans and timber columns. Pair a palace visit with the mosque or fortress that interests you most, leaving time to sit down between them. Tosh Hovli Palace

Check the current ticket’s inclusions at purchase. This itinerary does not assume that every monument, climb or evening activity belongs to one pass. Khiva is also a place where people live and work; ask before photographing people or entering a private doorway. Khiva’s historic city

Day 11: more Khiva or the desert castles?

Stay in Khiva if you want a second slow day, have a missed interior to visit, or prefer not to spend another day in a vehicle. You do not need an excursion to justify the third night: it also gives you two complete days after the arrival evening.

Choose a castle outing if archaeology is a priority and the transport and weather fit. Toprak Kala lies in the Ellikqala district of Karakalpakstan and served as a royal residence in the second–third centuries. Ayaz Kala is a group of three fortresses northeast of Bustan. Request a route naming the individual sites, pickup and return point, planned walking, lunch arrangements, vehicle and total charge. Tell the organiser about any difficulty with uneven ground or slopes. Ask which stops remain suitable in the actual conditions; a historic description does not establish today’s access.

For this itinerary, limit the day to the agreed castle outing and return to the same Khiva accommodation. An Aral Sea or Nukus extension requires its own overnight plan and a change to this route; it is not an extra item after the castles.

Days 12–14: return to Tashkent before departure

Use day 12 for the return journey. Uzbekistan Railways’ report of 29 July 2026 confirms the Tashkent–Khiva–Tashkent service. Search Khiva to Tashkent for your actual date and choose an arrival that preserves the final two capital nights. This article does not claim live seats or a guaranteed daily departure. A flight from Urgench is an alternative only once you find a suitable departure and include the transfer from Khiva. Compare the whole journey: road access to the airport, check-in, flight, arrival terminal and hotel transfer. The rail and airport endpoints are not interchangeable.

For a domestic flight, check the baggage and change conditions of the exact fare. Uzbekistan Airways’ fare-brand notice, effective from 1 April 2026, distinguishes included services between brands. Keep day 13 in Tashkent for a visit you postponed, packing and the final transfer arrangements. The two-night return is a planning buffer, not a guarantee against disruption. On day 14, work backwards from the airline’s check-in deadline. If your flight departs just after midnight, arrange the preceding evening and any room use accordingly.

Keep the number of nights explicit when changing airports or adding an excursion. The variants below are editorial allocations; transport availability still decides which works for your dates.

What to include in the 14-day budget

Build the estimate from this route rather than doubling a seven-day total. It has an extra city, a long return leg and optional out-of-town visits. Hotel nights and passenger tickets have different units, so write those beside every quoted price.

A workable booking order

Start with the fixed arrival and departure, then resolve the two Khiva connections before committing to non-changeable hotel nights. The cities can stay the same while the order or a transfer day changes.

   Map days 1–14 to calendar dates, including overnight flights and early arrivals.

   Confirm the intercity sequence

   Check Tashkent–Samarkand, Samarkand–Bukhara, Bukhara–Khiva and Khiva–Tashkent separately. Save the selected journeys and their stations.

   Match the rooms

   Reserve 2, 3, 3, 3 and 2 nights in the main plan; confirm any early arrival or late departure room use.

   Choose support and extras

   Decide which guide sessions, transfers or excursions you want. Get the inclusions and total in writing before paying.

Adjust the day, not just the packing list

Use the best-time-to-visit guide to choose dates for the activities that matter most. If the forecast makes a long outdoor visit unattractive, the flexible Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva days let you shorten the outdoor block, choose an available indoor visit or rest.
