Do I need a visa for Kyrgyzstan, and how long can I stay?

Most Western passports do not need a visa. Citizens of the 55 countries in Appendix 1 of Kyrgyzstan's regulation on the stay of foreign citizens may stay without a visa for up to 30 days in each 60-day period. The list includes the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Norway and all 27 EU states. The 30-day limit is recent. It came in with resolution No. 855 of 31 December 2025, which took effect on its publication in the official newspaper Erkin-Too on 13 January 2026; until then the same countries had 60 days in each 120. Other nationalities have different limits, set in paragraphs 13 to 16 of the regulation and in the foreign ministry's list of visa-free agreements. The table gives all of them. If your country is not listed, you need a visa before you travel (see the e-visa section).

How do the 30 days in 60 work, and how are they counted?

Count calendar days from the day you cross the border. The regulation says the stay is counted in calendar days from 00:01 on the day of crossing. The state's electronic migration register (ESUVM) does the counting, and your last exit date closes the previous period; if the system is down, officers count from the entry and exit stamps in your passport. That wording was added by resolution No. 602 of 7 September 2026. Regulation No. 541, para. 10, Resolution No. 602

The regulation speaks of 30 days "in total" within each 60-day period "from the moment of entry", so days from separate visits add up. It gives no worked example, so here is our reading of it. If you enter on 1 June, the 60-day period runs to 30 July. Spend 20 days in Kyrgyzstan, fly to Tashkent and come back, and you have 10 days left until 30 July. We would not count on a fresh 30 days at the second entry: plan for no more than 30 days in Kyrgyzstan in total during that period.

At the border the officer records the purpose of your visit in the system from what you say (paragraph 11 of the regulation), so say "tourism" if that is why you came. How much passport validity do I need?

Have at least six months left on your passport after your planned exit, or after the end of your visa if you have one. Germany's foreign office gives that rule and adds that missing or damaged pages can lead to refused entry; the Kyrgyz embassy in the US gives the same six months for e-visa holders, counted from the visa's expiry. Travel on one passport throughout. An e-visa is issued for a specific passport and you show that passport at the border (paragraph 33 of the visa regulation). If registration is required, use the passport you entered with. Visa regulation, para. 33, Sputnik Kyrgyzstan via For.kg, 23 September 2026

Who needs an e-visa, and how do I apply?

You need a visa if your passport is on no visa-free list, or if you want to stay longer than your visa-free period. You can apply online on the foreign ministry's e-visa portal. The rules are in the government's temporary regulation on visas (resolution No. 312 of 30 April 2026, amended on 23 July 2026). Visa regulation, paras 3 and 17, checked 24 September 2026

A tourist visa (type TS) is issued for up to 30 calendar days, as a single- or multiple-entry visa. An e-visa takes up to 5 working days from a complete application, or up to 2 working days with urgent processing. You upload a colour scan of your passport and either a letter from the tour company hosting you or your own application. You cannot get a tourist visa once you are inside Kyrgyzstan: the regulation excludes tourist visas from in-country issue. Visa regulation, paras 16, 22, 24, 26 and 27

Fees are set by the Cabinet of Ministers, and the portal has to show them, with payment methods and processing times, before you pay (paragraphs 18 and 112). The portal did not load for us on 24 September 2026, so this page quotes no fee: check the amount on the portal itself. Do I need to register after I arrive?

Not if you come from one of the 55 visa-free countries and leave within your 30 days. Resolution No. 600 of 4 September 2026 lists, country by country, how long foreigners may stay before they must register. For every country on the visa-free list the period is at least 30 calendar days (30 for most, 60 for Chile, 90 for Greece), as long as the visa-free stay itself. The resolution was published on 8 September and took effect 15 days later; Sputnik Kyrgyzstan dates the new procedure from 23 September 2026. For these countries the period without registration was cut from 60 days to 30, the state service Kyzmat said on 21 September, in step with the shorter visa-free stay. Vecherny Bishkek, 21 September 2026

Registration matters if you stay longer on a visa, or hold a passport with a shorter period. The host registers you: the hotel, hostel or landlord, at the address where you actually live, online or in person. It is done after arrival and no later than the last day of your period; if the host does not own the flat, the owner's notarised consent or power of attorney is needed. Kyzmat says an application made only three days before the deadline is refused, and a registration lapses if you leave Kyrgyzstan for 30 days or more. If your country is not listed in the resolution, the general rule in the law on external migration applies: register within five working days of crossing the border, unless a treaty says otherwise. Uzbekistan, China and Moldova are among those not listed. If that is your passport and you plan a long stay, confirm the deadline with your host or a Kyrgyz consulate. What happens if I overstay?

You are fined, and since September 2026 you are also refused visa-free entry next time. Resolution No. 602 added to the regulation that foreigners who exceeded their permitted stay "are refused entry for the term of the visa-free stay". Economist.kg reads this as refusal at the border within the visa-free regime; Sputnik Kyrgyzstan dates the rule from 18 September 2026. The text sets no longer ban. The fine grows with the length of the overstay (Code of Offences, article 431). Kyrgyz fines are set in calculation units of 100 som each, a value unchanged since 2006. The person or company hosting you can be fined too: 10 units for a private host and 55 for a company for a breach of up to a month (article 430). Code of Offences, Zakon.kg

You may need an exit visa before you can leave. Germany's foreign office says foreigners who exceed the 30 visa-free days need an exit visa from the consular department of the Kyrgyz foreign ministry, which can take several days and comes with higher fees and possibly a fine. Which land borders can I use from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan?

From Uzbekistan, the main road crossing is Dostuk, between Andijan and Osh. From Kazakhstan, Korday (Ak-Zhol on the Kyrgyz side) is the main road between Almaty and Bishkek, and Karkara links the Almaty region with Karakol. Buses from Tashkent to Bishkek run through Kazakhstan and enter Kyrgyzstan at Chaldybar (Sypatai Batyr on the Kazakh side). There is no direct train. Karkara keeps shorter hours than the others. Kyrgyzstan's border service extended its daily hours to 08:00–21:00 Bishkek time for 21 July to 31 August 2026, and on 22 September 2026 the deputy head of the border service told parliament that the post now works 09:00–20:00, a limit set by the Kazakh side (K-News). Kazakhstan's parliament ratified a protocol in January 2026 to make it a 24-hour post, and we found no announced start date. Do I need a permit for border areas?

Yes, for the zones along the Chinese and Tajik borders, and you arrange it before you go. Germany's foreign office says the permit can be requested in person from the registration authority (OVIR) or the local border authorities, and that travel agencies help with applications. Passing straight through an official crossing such as Dostuk or Korday does not need a border-zone permit; the permit is for travel inside the zone, such as treks and drives close to the frontier. How do I combine Kyrgyzstan with an Uzbekistan trip?

Count the two countries separately. Uzbekistan's foreign ministry says its 30- and 60-day visa-free periods run from each crossing of the Uzbek border, so flying back from Bishkek starts a new Uzbek period. Two planning rules follow from the texts above. What still goes wrong?

Outdated official pages, restrictions on e-visa crossings and recent rule changes can cause confusion: the registration rules changed on 23 September 2026 and the overstay rule on 18 September. • Official pages disagree. The Kyrgyz embassy page in the US still gives the old 60-day visa-free stay, and the MFA's list of agreements says Russians, Kazakhstanis, Belarusians and Armenians stay visa-free "with no time limit", while the regulation sets 90 days in 180. • We did not find the detailed registration procedure (Annex 1 to resolution No. 600) in the Justice Ministry database when we checked; its details here come from the state service Kyzmat as reported by Vecherny Bishkek and Economist.kg.
• The e-visa portal did not load for us on 24 September 2026, so we quote no fee.
• E-visa holders cannot use Karkara, which is missing from the MFA's list of 12 posts. Caravanistan also reports that Ak-Tilek, one of the 12, now takes only freight traffic and no foreigners. Caravanistan
