THE SHORT ANSWER
Tajikistan is the easiest neighbour to reach from Samarkand: the Jartepa–Sarazm border crossing is under an hour's drive away, Penjikent is just beyond it, and Dushanbe is 6–9 hours by road. US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean and EU citizens can visit without a visa for 30 days; British, Indian and Israeli citizens need a visa, and the e-visa costs US$30. The Pamirs are the demanding part: a GBAO permit (US$20), 8–10 days on the Pamir Highway, and a road that runs beside the Afghan border.

The western trip starts in Samarkand: cross at Jartepa–Sarazm, see Penjikent and continue through the Anzob tunnel to Dushanbe. Samarkand to Dushanbe has the crossing, the shared taxis and the weekly train 302 from Samarkand.
The eastern trip is the Pamir Highway: about 1,320 km from Dushanbe through Khorog and Murghab to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, over the 4,655 m Ak-Baital pass. Plan 8–10 days on the main road, or 10–14 with the Wakhan, between June and September.
Visa, permit and registration
The Tajik foreign ministry's consular department lists 30 days visa-free for the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and all EU states; the UK, India, Israel, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Türkiye need a visa. The e-visa costs US$30 single or US$50 multiple entry for a stay of up to 60 days. The Pamirs need a separate GBAO permit, US$20 with a visa or e-visa.
Visa-free visitors who stay more than 10 working days must register; e-visa holders are exempt. Tajikistan visa and GBAO permit has the rules by passport.
Safety near the Afghan border
On 24 September 2026 the US rated Tajikistan Level 2 of 4 and advised reconsidering travel to the Afghan border and GBAO; Canada advises against all travel within 10 km of the Afghan border. Between Kalaikhumb and Khorog the Pamir Highway follows the border river. The Penjikent and Dushanbe trip is away from that border. Common questions
Do I need a visa for Tajikistan?
US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean and EU citizens can visit without a visa for 30 days. UK, Indian, Israeli, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Turkish citizens need a visa; the e-visa costs US$30 single or US$50 multiple entry. See Tajikistan visa and GBAO permit.
Can I cross from Samarkand to Tajikistan?
Usually, on foot through the Jartepa–Sarazm crossing; Penjikent is 15–20 minutes beyond it and Dushanbe about 6–9 hours from Samarkand by road. Foreigners have crossed there, but the Uzbek Customs list classes it as a bilateral post (normally Uzbek and Tajik citizens only), so confirm before you go. See Samarkand to Dushanbe.
Do I need a permit for the Pamirs?
Yes: the GBAO permit, US$20 when issued with an e-visa or a visa from a Tajik embassy. Visa-free travellers get it from OVIR in Tajikistan or through an operator.
Is the Pamir Highway safe?
It carries more risk than the rest of the country: between Kalaikhumb and Khorog it runs beside the Afghan border, where Canada advises against all travel within 10 km and the US says reconsider travel. See Is Tajikistan safe?.
