Kyrgyzstan itinerary: 8 days, or 12 with Uzbekistan

The 8-day route, day by day

Bishkek → north shore of Issyk-Kul → Karakol → Altyn-Arashan → Karakol → Bishkek: 8 calendar days and 7 nights, arrival and departure included. The lake gets 2 nights in one base, Karakol a night on each side of the mountain night, and the drive back to Bishkek a day of its own, so no long road leg falls on a flight day. Flying in from Uzbekistan, use the 12-day version; for a trek instead of the valley night, see the variants.

Choose one north-shore base, such as Cholpon-Ata or Tamchy, for both lake nights. Issyk-Kul is about 180 km long and 60 km wide (UNESCO), so book a named village and address, not just the lake. The route stays on one shore and does not circle the lake.

Every leg: distance, time and fare

Minibuses cover every leg as far as Ak-Suu; only the last stretch into the Altyn-Arashan valley is a rough 4×4 track with no public transport (Visit Karakol). Pay minibuses and shared taxis in cash. Tezket.kg, the Kyrgyz bus-booking site, showed online sales suspended until October 2026 on 27 September (Tezket), so buy at the station.

A car with a driver works on every leg too. No tariff is published: ask for a price per day that includes waiting time and the driver's meals and night, and have the 4×4 for the valley priced per vehicle.

Day 1: Bishkek, cash and the bus station

Book the first night around your real landing time; a late arrival still counts as day 1. Express bus 153 links Manas airport and the city for 122 som, paid only by contactless card, bank QR code or a Tulpar card (Bishkek City Hall), with night runs at 00:00, 03:00 and 05:00 (City Hall). City buses have taken no cash since 1 July 2026 (Kaktus Media). Land by early afternoon and you have time for Ala-Too Square and the National Historical Museum: 200 som, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–18:00 (museum). The Bishkek guide has a full city day.

Get som on day 1. Minibuses, village guesthouses and the valley camps want cash, and the National Bank's rate on 24 September 2026 was 87.45 som to the US dollar. Mir cards have not worked in Kyrgyzstan since 3 April 2024 (Interbank Processing Centre), so travellers from Russia should bring cash. Money, SIM cards and daily budgets are in the Kyrgyzstan guide.

Buses to Issyk-Kul and Karakol leave from the main bus station at 1/1 Alma-Atinskaya Street, open 07:00–23:30: minibuses from 07:00 to 19:00, larger buses from 21:00 (Bishkek City Hall). The old Western bus station has closed (City Hall), so ignore older advice that sends you there.

Days 2–3: one lake base and a full day at the water

Leave Bishkek in the morning. The road to Cholpon-Ata runs about 262 km through the Boom gorge and takes 4–5 hours by car (Issykkul.biz). Minibuses from the main bus station cost 400–600 som and shared-taxi seats 1,000–1,500 som (Economist.kg, July 2026). In summer 2026 a train also ran to Balykchy, leaving Bishkek-2 at 08:06 and arriving at 12:37 between 5 June and 13 September (Economist.kg); from Balykchy you still need a car or minibus to the hotel.

Two nights in one place give one full day without a move. Spend it at the water, or on one visit in Cholpon-Ata: Rukh Ordo, the Chingiz Aitmatov cultural centre with five chapels for four faiths (Wikipedia, in Russian), or the open-air petroglyph museum on the north shore (Ak-Sai Travel). For swimming, local advice favours the second half of July and August (Carva, May 2026).

Choose the room for its shore access: the walk to the water, any road to cross and the beach's own entry rules. A south-shore base around Bokonbaevo makes sense when a particular camp or craft visit is the reason; then rebuild days 2 and 4 around it instead of adding the second shore to day 3. Day 4: Karakol before the mountain night

Minibuses run between Cholpon-Ata and Karakol through the day in about 2 hours, from 300 som (Destination Karakol). Karakol lies about 12 km inland from the lake (Karakol municipality), so it is a town base, not a beach one.

The afternoon fits two sights. The wooden Dungan Mosque was built in 1907–1910 for the town's Dungan community (Destination Karakol); Holy Trinity Church, at 16 Gagarin Street, is a wooden church of 1893–1895 (Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan diocese). For dinner, order ashlan-fu, Karakol's cold noodle dish (Destination Karakol). The history museum, reopened after reconstruction on 22 August 2026 (Kabar), can wait for day 6. Settle day 5 before you go sightseeing: how you go up (on foot, on horseback or by 4×4), who meets you, which camp or guesthouse you sleep in, which meals are included and how you come down. Ask the Karakol hotel to store the luggage you leave behind, and book nights 4 and 6 as two separate stays.

Days 5–6: a night in the Altyn-Arashan valley

Take the minibus to Ak-Suu, also called Teploklyuchenka: every 10 minutes from 07:20, 20 minutes, from 50 som plus 30 som per trekking bag. From Ak-Suu the valley is a long walk up a 4×4 track. Visit Alay gives 15 km and 4–5 hours for the way down, so plan most of day 5 for the way up. CBT Karakol rides the same approach, 16 km to its yurt camp, and its 4×4 day trip allows about 2 hours from Karakol to the springs.

No public transport goes into the valley, and an ordinary taxi stops at the foot of the track. Camps sit at 2,450 m by Visit Alay's figure and 2,600 m by Nomad's Land's, and the evening and morning at the hot springs are the reason to stay the night. Baths are paid apart from the bed, so have the bath, session and price listed in the quote.

Day 6 is the walk or ride down and the rest of the day in Karakol. This route goes up and comes down the same valley. The Ala-Kul trek crosses a 3,860 m pass and takes 4 days, so it is a different trip; the Altyn-Arashan guide covers the approach choices and what to pack.

Days 7–8: back to Bishkek, then the flight

Give the road back its own day. Karakol to Bishkek is 400 km and 6–7 hours by road; minibuses and night buses start at 500 som and a shared-taxi seat costs 1,000–1,500 som (Destination Karakol), and GoBus charges 800–1,000 som (Economist.kg, July 2026). Leave in the morning and keep the evening free.

The last Bishkek night keeps the long drive and the flight on different days. For an early flight, bus 153's night runs reach Manas, or book a taxi the evening before. Flying on to Tashkent: Uzbekistan Airways, Centrum Air, Qanot Sharq and Aero Nomad all fly Bishkek–Tashkent, and because Tashkent is an hour behind, you land at almost the clock time you left (Yandex Timetables).

Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in 12 days

Twelve days fit the three main Silk Road cities and a short Kyrgyz loop: 6 nights in Uzbekistan on the Tashkent–Samarkand–Bukhara railway, a flight from Tashkent to Bishkek on day 7, then 5 nights in Kyrgyzstan, 2 of them on Issyk-Kul and 1 in Karakol. The Uzbek days follow our 7-day Uzbekistan route; the Kyrgyz days are the plan above without the mountain night. The route suits a ticket into Tashkent and home from Bishkek. Khiva is left out: it takes 2 more days.

Book in this order: international flights, the Tashkent–Bishkek flight, the three trains when sales open 60 days ahead at 10:00 Tashkent time (how to buy), then hotels in both countries, then the Kyrgyz transport.

• The flight fixes the calendar. Four airlines fly Tashkent–Bishkek in 1 h 10 min–1 h 25 min, but only Uzbekistan Airways' 15:20 departure runs on most days; Aero Nomad's 22:00 flight lands at 00:25. On 24 September only Uzbekistan Airways and Centrum Air had dates listed after 25 October. Choose the flight first, then put the Bukhara–Tashkent train on the day before it. The overnight bus through Kazakhstan leaves Tashkent at 18:00 and 19:00, 9 h 40 min by the timetable (Tashtrans), and needs a Kazakh visa for passports outside Kazakhstan's visa-free list. • Entry. Citizens of the 55 countries on Kyrgyzstan's list, including the UK, the US and most of the EU, stay up to 30 days in each 60 without a visa; Uzbek citizens 60 in 120 (Ministry of Justice, regulation No. 541). Visitors from those 55 countries need no registration for their 30 days (resolution No. 600, in force since 23 September 2026). Uzbekistan's visa-free days run from each border crossing, so flying back to Tashkent starts a new period (Uzbek foreign ministry), and hotels register you through E-mehmon at each check-in (registration rules). • Two currencies. The Kyrgyz som and the Uzbek so'm are different currencies: spend or change your so'm before you fly, and get som in Bishkek.
• Overland instead of the flight. Train 730 leaves Tashkent at 07:20 and reaches Andijan at 11:42 from 1 October 2026 (Spot.uz); cross on foot at Dostuk, sleep in Osh and fly 40–60 minutes to Bishkek (Yandex Timetables). It adds a night and suits a trip through the Fergana Valley; Central Asia in 2 weeks is built on it.
• Mountains instead of the lake. Within the same 12 days, sleep night 8 in Karakol (400 km from Bishkek, 6–7 h), night 9 in Altyn-Arashan and night 10 in Karakol; the lake nights drop out.
• Ending in Tashkent, or adding the mountains. For a flight home from Tashkent, fly back from Bishkek on day 12 with hours to spare before the international departure. The Altyn-Arashan night and a second Karakol night make it 14 days.

Seven, nine or ten days, or a trek instead of the valley night

Add or remove a whole night rather than squeezing two long legs into one day. The last two rows swap the valley walk for a ride or a trek from our trekking guide. The Jeti-Oguz gorge in the 9-day row lies 25–30 km from Karakol by the figures of Too.kg and Dorogi ne dorogi.

What the 8 days cost, and what to book first

Public prices add up to about 22,100–28,500 som ($253–326) per person for two people sharing, before flights, the valley night and anything guided. It is our sum of dated third-party prices, not an Oxusroad price. Rooms and food are the big lines: a private room on Issyk-Kul cost 2,000–4,000 som a night in July 2026 (Economist.kg), and we use the lake prices for Bishkek and Karakol too.

Book the valley host first, then the lake and Karakol rooms around it, then the day-7 transport. Consumer prices rose 12% in the year to August 2026 (National Statistical Committee), so prices from 2025 run low.

• Lake room: 2 nights at one named property; the walk to the shore, meals and check-in time.
• Karakol: nights 4 and 6 as separate bookings, and luggage storage while you are in the valley.
• Valley night: a named camp or guesthouse, bed or shared yurt, bedding, meals, the bath and its price, and how you go up and down.
• Day 7: a seat or the whole car, the departure point and the drop-off in Bishkek.

When to go: July and August for the valley night

Destination Karakol calls June to early September the high season in the mountains around Karakol, and its travel information notes that high passes hold snow in June. For this route, July and August are the surest months: the valley camps are open and the lake is at its warmest. The Bishkek–Balykchy train ran from 5 June to 13 September in 2026.

In spring or late autumn, ask your Altyn-Arashan host about the track and the camp before you book, and keep a Karakol-based alternative. Watch out on this route

Most problems on this route come from cash, timetables and the valley track.

• Cash beyond Bishkek. Minibuses, guesthouses and valley camps take som in cash, and Russian-issued cards, Mir included, do not work.
• No online bus tickets this autumn. Tezket.kg showed online sales suspended until October 2026; buy at the station and leave time on the morning of day 2.
• The valley track. Beyond Ak-Suu there is no public transport, a city taxi is not a mountain transfer, and the walk down alone takes 4–5 hours.
• Cold at 2,500 m. Nights in the valley are cold even in July, and in June high passes still hold snow; ask the host about the track before you go up.
• Winter flights. After 25 October fewer Tashkent–Bishkek flights were listed, so the 12-day plan depends on the flight days.
• A long day 7. Six to seven hours on the road: keep the Bishkek night before your flight.
