Almaty in 3 days: city, mountains and Charyn Canyon

What does the three-day plan look like?

One day in the centre, one in the mountains above the city and one at Charyn Canyon, with three nights in Almaty. The plan assumes you arrive on the morning train from Tashkent or on a flight the evening before day 1.

The order is our recommendation. The centre comes first because it is less dependent on clear weather. Charyn comes last because it is the longest day, and it is the easiest day to move if cloud spoils the mountains on day 2.

How do you arrive: overnight train or flight?

The daily Talgo from Tashkent delivers you to Almaty at the start of day 1. In the Kazakhstan Railways booking search we ran on 24 September 2026, train 001 leaves Tashkent at 14:41 and reaches Almaty-2 at 08:51 the next morning. Both times are local and the journey shows as 18 h 10 min, so the two cities are in the same time zone.

Almaty-2 is beside Raiymbek Batyr metro station. The metro operator lists the station, the Green Bazaar and the Sayakhat bus station as its nearest landmarks, so the first stop of day 1 is close to the platform. If your room is not ready at nine, leave the bags and start walking.

Flying the evening before gives you a night in Almaty instead of on the train. The Tashkent airport departure board on 24 September 2026 showed Almaty flights by Air Astana, Uzbekistan Airways, Centrum Air and Qanot Sharq, all from Terminal 2. Fly in the evening before day 1. Day 1: the centre on foot, then Kok-Tobe

Day 1 is a walking day in the old centre, with one taxi to the museum and the cable car at the end. Start at the Green Bazaar in the morning. The Almaty city guide Sxodim gives its hours as 08:00–19:00, Tuesday to Sunday, and says it is closed on Mondays; that article dates from April 2023 (Sxodim).

From the bazaar walk to Panfilov Park and the Ascension Cathedral, a timber Orthodox church built in 1904–1907 that still holds services. Then walk the pedestrian stretch of Zhibek Zholy between Abylai Khan Avenue and Kunaev Street, known locally as the Arbat. The metro operator lists both the Arbat and the cathedral next to Zhibek Zholy station, which is the easy way back to your room.

After lunch take a taxi to the National Central Museum of Kazakhstan (formerly the Central State Museum) in the Samal-1 district. Its price list charges foreigners 5,000 tenge for all halls without a guide, or 10,000 tenge with a tour in Kazakh, Russian or English. It is open 09:00–18:00, the ticket desk closes at 17:30, and it is closed on Tuesdays. We would allow two hours.

End the day on Kok-Tobe hill. The cable car leaves from the lower station on Dostyk Avenue, runs 1,620 metres and takes 6 minutes. A return ticket is 10,000 tenge for adults and 5,000 tenge for children; one way is 6,000 and 3,000. The timetable is 10:00–22:00 on most days and 10:00–23:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays, but on Tuesdays the cable car opens only at 13:00. Go up an hour before dark to see the city by day and with its lights on.

Day 2: Shymbulak by gondola, or Big Almaty Lake on foot?

Choose one. The gondola offers high mountain views with little walking. Reaching the lake takes a demanding uphill walk. They start from different roads out of the city, so trying both in one day leaves too little time for either.

Shymbulak. Buses 12 (from the Dostyk–Kurmangazy stop) and 21 (from Dostyk–Zholdasbekov) run to the Medeu base station every 30 minutes from 07:00 to 20:00, according to the resort. From Medeu the gondola climbs to Shymbulak, and the Kombi-1 and Kombi-2 lifts continue to 3,200 metres. The return Shymbulak Ticket covers all three: 12,000 tenge for adults from 15, 4,000 tenge for children aged 6 to 14. One way costs 7,000 tenge (resort tariffs). The Medeu–Shymbulak line runs 09:00–18:00, Kombi-1 until 17:00 and Kombi-2 until 16:30, so go up before lunch.

The resort also says that the car road into Shymbulak is closed from 24 July to 30 November 2026 for engineering works, and that its summer season ends on 18 October. The three main lines then stop for maintenance from 19 October to 1 November (Shymbulak, 15 September 2026). On those dates, consider the lake walk if conditions allow, or spend another day in the city.

Big Almaty Lake. The lake road is closed to private cars, motorcycles, e-scooters and e-bikes, and the lake is reached on foot. A forester of Ile-Alatau national park confirmed at a city briefing in spring 2026 that the ban remains, citing steep slopes, poor visibility, falling rocks and accidents with rented e-bikes (Kursiv, 30 April 2026; Almaty TV, 4 May 2026).

The Almaty tour company xBike describes the walk as 6–7 km with about 800 metres of climbing from the upper barrier on the lake road: 3 to 3.5 hours up, 6 to 7 hours for the round trip with a rest. Most people take a taxi to the barrier; bus 28 only goes as far as the GES-2 stop, about 12 km from the lake. Carry your passport, because the gorge is in the border zone. xBike also says swimming is not allowed, because the lake supplies Almaty with drinking water (xBike, 1 June 2026). xBike puts the park fee at about 650 tenge per walker; Tengrinews reports the Ile-Alatau walker fee as 0.15 MRP, or 648 tenge in 2026.

Day 3: Charyn Canyon, and why Kolsai and Kaindy wait

Of the three sights east of Almaty covered here—Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy—Charyn is the most practical choice for a day trip to a single site. It lies 195–200 km east of Almaty, 3 to 3.5 hours each way by car along the A-351 through Bayseit and over the Kokpek pass (zabugorshiki). One Almaty operator runs its Charyn-only group day from 07:30 to about 19:30 (Tau Komek).

The main walk is the Valley of Castles: 3 km one way with 220 metres of descent to the Charyn river, about an hour down, and the same or more back up. Private vehicles are not allowed along the valley; a park UAZ shuttle drives down to the river if you would rather not walk. The Charyn national park charges walkers 0.2 MRP a day, 865 tenge in 2026 (Tengrinews, 9 January 2026). Tours usually include it.

Public buses from the Sayakhat bus station towards Kegen or Narynkol can drop you at the Charyn turn-off, but that leaves about 10 km on foot across the steppe to the visitor centre, and catching a bus back is hard, zabugorshiki warns. For a day trip we would use a tour, a private driver or a rental car.

Kolsai and Kaindy are further out. Kolsai is about 300 km from Almaty, 4 to 5 hours by road, and the walk from the lower to the middle lake alone is 7–8 km (zabugorshiki). Added to Charyn, that is too much driving for one day, so we treat the lakes as a separate two-day trip with a night in Saty (see the variants below).

How do you get around on each day?

The metro covers the centre on day 1, a bus or a taxi covers the mountains on day 2, and Charyn on day 3 needs a car. The Almaty metro runs from 06:20 to midnight. A single token costs 120 tenge, and the ticket offices take cash, bank cards at a POS terminal and Onay transport cards.

We could not verify current bus fares or taxi prices from an official source, so we do not quote them. For any taxi, agree the fare or use an app before you set off.

What do the tickets and park fees add up to?

We price only official tickets and fees. Transport to Charyn, taxis, food and rooms are left out because there is no official price to cite. For one adult foreigner who takes the Shymbulak option and two metro rides, the entries below add up to 28,105 tenge, about $63, by our calculation. With the lake walk instead of Shymbulak, the total is 16,753 tenge, about $38.

Dollar figures use the National Bank of Kazakhstan rate for 24 September 2026: 445.65 tenge to the dollar. Your card will use its own rate. Children pay less at the museum, on Kok-Tobe and at Shymbulak; the linked price lists give their rates.

The Charyn fee for a car is reported as 0.6 MRP by Tengrinews and 0.7 MRP by Informburo. We leave it out until we can read the ministry order itself.

How does the plan change with the season?

The order of the days stays the same all year. What changes is which day-2 option works and how early day 3 has to start.

• September to mid-October: our choice for this plan. The Shymbulak lifts run until 18 October 2026 and the lake walk is open, though xBike warns that late-September mornings at the lake are cold and that snow can fall there in October.
• Late October to early November: the Medeu–Shymbulak, Kombi-1 and Kombi-2 lines stop for maintenance from 19 October to 1 November 2026, and the KKD-4 chairlift from 12 October to 9 November. Walk to the lake, or use day 2 for the city alternative below.
• Winter: xBike says the lake road lies under snow and ice from November to April, which turns the walk into a winter hike. Shymbulak becomes a ski resort; its winter dates and lift passes appear on the resort site each season, and we have not checked them for 2026–27. Charyn is cold and windy, with winter lows down to −25 °C according to Kazia Tour. Days are short, so leave for Charyn at first light.
• June to August: Charyn is hot with little shade, so start day 3 early and walk down before noon. xBike notes that summer is also the busiest time on the lake road. It is also mudflow season: Almaty's emergency department says it usually runs from mid-June to the end of September, sometimes into October, and in July 2026 it advised against mountain trips during high danger (BES.media, 2 July 2026). Check the warnings before day 2 and day 3.

Only two days, or four to five?

With two days, keep days 1 and 2 and drop Charyn. It is the only part that needs a car and a whole day; the centre and the mountains are reached by metro, bus and cable car.

With four or five days, add Kolsai and Kaindy as a two-day trip with a night in Saty. Almaty operators sell Charyn and Kolsai together as one-day and two-day tours (Kazia Tour), so day 3 can become the first day of that trip.

Where to stay, and what can you arrange yourself?

Stay in the centre, within walking distance of Zhibek Zholy or another central metro station. That keeps day 1 on foot and the Dostyk Avenue buses of day 2 close by. This is our advice, not a hotel recommendation; we do not list hotels.

You can run the whole plan on your own. Days 1 and 2 need only tickets bought on the spot; Shymbulak also sells lift tickets online and at the Medeu ticket office. Transport to Charyn is the part that is harder to arrange alone, which is why we suggest a tour or a driver for day 3.

What can go wrong on this plan?

Most problems come from weekly closing days, the length of day 3 and mountain weather. Here is what to expect. See all our Kazakhstan guides, entry rules and QazETA and safety advice.

• Closing days. The bazaar and the Kasteev museum close on Mondays, and the Kasteev museum also on the last day of each month. The National Central Museum closes on Tuesdays, and Kok-Tobe opens at 13:00 that day. Our bazaar hours come from a 2023 article.
• Day 3 is mostly driving. Allow six to seven hours of driving for two or three hours at the canyon.
• Day 1 after a night train. You arrive at 08:51 after 18 hours on board and walk all day. If you slept badly, move Kok-Tobe to day 2.
• The lake walk is real exercise. 800 metres of climbing at altitude, a long descent that can strain your knees, and weather that can differ sharply from the city: xBike gives 10–15 °C at the lake on summer days, 1,700 metres above the centre.
• Seasonal gaps and mudflows. The Shymbulak lifts close for maintenance from 19 October to 1 November 2026, and the car road into Shymbulak stays closed until 30 November. From mid-June to the end of September, a mudflow warning can close the mountain options.
• Prices we could not confirm. Bus fares, taxi prices and the Charyn car fee. The older Kok-Tobe domain, kok-tobe.kz, does not load; our Kok-Tobe prices come from koktobe.com.
