Almaty travel guide 2026: sights, prices, getting around

How is Almaty laid out?

Almaty has a walkable old centre and mountains along its southern edge. Panfilov Park, Ascension Cathedral, the Green Bazaar and the pedestrian Arbat are close together in the centre. Kok-Tobe, the two big museums and the mountains need the metro, a bus, a taxi or a cable car.

The historic centre is usually called the Golden Square. A June 2025 Tengrinews article, quoting local historian Andrey Pozdnyakov, gives its classic limits as Tole Bi Street, Abay Avenue, Abylai Khan Avenue and Dostyk Avenue, and a wider present-day version from Zhibek Zholy to Abay and from Seifullin to Dostyk. The same article names the Park of the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen and the Abay Opera and Ballet Theatre as landmarks inside it, and the stretch of Zhibek Zholy that locals call the Arbat.

The article also describes how the city grew south, towards the mountains and cleaner air. In practice that means a gentle but steady climb whenever you walk south. Kok-Tobe park sits at 1,100 m and, in the park's own words, is 5 minutes by car from the centre; its cable car leaves from Dostyk Avenue 104B.

Two sights lie outside the centre: the National Central Museum at Samal-1 microdistrict, 44, and the Kasteev art museum at Koktem-3, 22/1. Put the address into a map app before setting out. Medeu and the Shymbulak gondola are further up the mountain road.

What to see in Almaty: tickets and hours

Four paid sights are worth planning around: the National Central Museum, the Kasteev art museum, the Kok-Tobe cable car and, if the weather is clear, the Shymbulak gondola. We found no admission charge for Panfilov Park, the cathedral or the Green Bazaar. Foreign visitors pay more than residents at both museums.

• National Central Museum. This is the former Central State Museum; the old name is still on many maps. Its price list gives foreign visitors one ticket for all halls: 5,000 ₸ without a guide, or 10,000 ₸ with an overview tour in Kazakh, Russian or English. Residents pay 1,500 ₸ for the main exposition. The Golden Horde hall is priced separately at 2,000 ₸, with a mobile audio guide.
• Kasteev National Museum of Arts. The Kazakh-language page of the museum lists 5,000 ₸ for foreign adults and 2,500 ₸ for foreign children. Residents pay 2,000 ₸. It closes on Mondays and for a cleaning day on the last day of each month. The two museums have different days off, so plan a museum day for Wednesday to Sunday.
• Kok-Tobe. The park’s cable-car page gives a 1,620 m ride of about 6 minutes, in 17 gondolas since the 2016 rebuild. Children aged 6–12 pay 3,000 ₸ one way or 5,000 ₸ return. A park bus from Omarova Street 41 costs 2,000 ₸ one way or 3,000 ₸ return. Driving your own car into the park costs 25,000 ₸, so take the cable car or the bus.
• Panfilov Park and Ascension Cathedral. The Almaty city guide Sxodim says the cathedral was built in 1904–1907 to a design by Andrey Zenkov. It calls it one of the tallest wooden churches in the world and says it survived the 1911 earthquake thanks to its earthquake-resistant design. It is a working cathedral. The diocese’s website would not load on 24 September 2026, so check service times on the door and dress modestly.
• Green Bazaar (Kok Bazaar). A 2023 Sxodim guide describes a Winter Pavilion for dried fruit, spices and dairy and a Central Pavilion for fruit and vegetables. It says vendors often take 5–10% off if you ask politely. We could not confirm the current hours on an official page.

Can you go up to Medeu, Shymbulak and Big Almaty Lake?

Yes, but not in the same way. Medeu and Shymbulak are linked by gondola, while Big Almaty Lake is now a walk. The Medeu skating rink itself is closed for rebuilding, with completion planned for the fourth quarter of 2027, according to the city administration (Tengrinews, 14 December 2025). Shymbulak’s ticket guide sells a return ticket from Medeu station up three cable cars (Medeu–Shymbulak, Kombi-1 and Kombi-2) for 12,000 ₸ for anyone 15 or older and 4,000 ₸ for children aged 6–14. One way costs 7,000 ₸. The resort says its summer season runs to 18 October 2026, with the lifts reaching 3,200 m. The three main lines then close for maintenance from 19 October to 1 November. The open chairlift, KKD-4, closes earlier, from 12 October to 9 November.

Big Almaty Lake, known locally as BAO, is reached on foot only. According to Tengrinews, Ile-Alatau National Park closed the lake road to private cars in mid-August 2025. It cited visitor safety on the mountain road, pressure on the protected area and the lake’s water-protection zone. In November 2025 the park said lifting the ban was not under consideration. Only walkers from the upper checkpoint and service or scientific transfers get through.

At a briefing reported by Kursiv on 30 April 2026, forester Murat Ryskul of the park’s Medeu branch confirmed the ban on cars, motorcycles, e-scooters and e-bikes. He said the lake stays open to walkers, and Almaty TV reported on 4 May 2026 that the ban remains. He also said 38 of the park’s 46 routes were open, 19 of them in the Medeu branch.

The national park charges an entry fee. For 2026, Inalmaty reports 648.75 ₸ per walker and 1,297.5 ₸ per car. The fee is set in monthly calculation indices, and the index rose to 4,325 ₸ in 2026.

How do you get to Almaty (and out)?

Most visitors fly in. From Uzbekistan there is also a daily overnight train from Tashkent.

Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) lists train No. 1/2 Almaty-2–Tashkent as daily. In KTZ’s booking search for 15 October 2026 it left Tashkent at 14:41 and reached Almaty-2 at 08:51 the next morning, 18 h 10 min later. Seats cost from 10,225 ₸ (about $23). Trains arrive at Almaty-2. KTZ suspended passenger service at Almaty-1 from 15 July 2026 while that station is rebuilt, so tell your driver the station printed on the ticket.

From western Uzbekistan the rail crossing is Nukus to Beyneu. It leads into western Kazakhstan, a long way from Almaty. For Kyrgyzstan, see Tashkent to Bishkek.

How do you get from Almaty airport to the city?

Take the airport bus for 120 ₸, or a taxi from the official Taxi Point.

The airport’s bus page says day bus No. 92 runs from terminals T1 and T2 to Mamyr-2 microdistrict from 06:00 to 23:00. Night bus No. 3 runs to Orbita-2 from 23:00 to 06:00. Both cost 120 ₸ and stop right outside the terminal. You pay with an Onay transport card, sold on the ground floor of the international terminal’s arrivals area.

The airport’s Taxi Point is an official 24-hour service with fixed fares for each car class. It is on the ground floor of the domestic terminal, next to exits A and B. The airport advises agreeing the car class and price before you set off. Yandex Go also serves the airport; its Almaty tariff adds up to 265 ₸ for a pickup from the airport car park. We did not price a ride to the centre.

How do you get around: metro, buses, Onay and Yandex Go?

Walk the centre, take the metro where it fits your route, and use Yandex Go for the rest. For buses, get an Onay card at the airport.

The Almaty metro runs from 06:20 to 00:00 and has 11 stations, from Raiymbek Batyr to B. Momyshuly. A smart token costs 120 ₸ and is valid for one day. A reusable smart card costs 180 ₸, plus 120 ₸ a ride. Ticket offices take cash and bank cards, and the gates also accept Onay.

Onay, the city’s transport-card system, lists 120 ₸ a ride on its standard card, which costs 800 ₸; a month’s pass is 9,900 ₸. The card is sold at the airport, at Onay’s two service centres and at Karavan kiosks, and you can top it up in the Onay app. Since February 2026 the city has also been adding the Avtobys app, route by route. Zakon.kz reports that it takes bank cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and that Onay keeps working.

Yandex Go works in Almaty. Its tariff page showed city rides from 400 ₸, covering the first 3 minutes and 1 km. After that it charged up to 58 ₸ a km and 27 ₸ a minute, before busy-time surcharges. That tariff was marked valid to 29 September 2026, so expect small changes. The UK Foreign Office advises pre-ordering licensed taxis rather than flagging cars down.

Where should you stay in Almaty?

For a first visit of 2–3 days, we would stay in or near the Golden Square. From there you can walk to Panfilov Park, the Arbat and the Green Bazaar, and the metro is close. The choices below are our planning advice, not hotel recommendations.

• Golden Square and the Arbat. The easiest base for sightseeing on foot, with the metro close by. Ask for a room away from the street if you sleep lightly.
• Upper centre along Dostyk Avenue. Closer to the Kok-Tobe cable car (Dostyk 104B) and the road up to Medeu. Walks back from the centre are uphill, so you will use taxis more.
• Up the mountain road near Medeu and Shymbulak. Shymbulak lists its own hotels on its website. This is a good base for hiking or skiing, but slow for city sights, and you depend on the lifts and the road.
• Near Almaty-2 station. Worth it only for an early-morning train or a late arrival.

Money, cards and a local SIM

Kazakhstan’s currency is the tenge (₸). On 24 September 2026 the National Bank of Kazakhstan set the official rate at 445.65 ₸ to the US dollar; the dollar figures on this page use it.

The metro ticket offices take bank cards, and the Avtobys app takes them on buses where it runs. We have not tested foreign cards in shops or at the bazaar, so carry some tenge in cash.

Using a local SIM card requires phone registration. Bes.media’s December 2025 guide explains that a phone on a Kazakh network has its IMEI (the handset’s serial number) checked. You get 30 days from the phone’s first connection to register it, or it loses service. Foreigners get the border-crossing record they need through the QazETA app.

The UK Foreign Office adds that registration also needs a Kazakh individual identification number (IIN). It says an unregistered local SIM is blocked after 30 days and that you cannot then activate another. For a short city break a local SIM is fine; for a longer stay the FCDO suggests a global eSIM. Is Almaty safe, and what about earthquakes?

Generally, yes, with normal precautions. The US State Department rates Kazakhstan Level 1, exercise normal precautions (17 August 2026). The UK Foreign Office names city risks plus earthquakes.

The FCDO reports violent thefts in Almaty and other cities, mostly at night near nightclubs and bars or when people get home late. It advises against walking alone at night, warns about pickpockets in crowds and recommends pre-ordered licensed taxis.

The same advice says Almaty is in an active seismic zone. At 00:09 on 23 January 2024, Kazakhstan’s National Data Center recorded a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Xinjiang, China, near the Kyrgyz border, about 260 km from Almaty. Its instruments measured 5 points on the MSK-64 intensity scale in the city. Tengrinews reported people running out of their homes into the snow and traffic jams on the roads out of town.

We would not change a trip because of the seismic risk. We would learn the hotel’s exits and save the emergency numbers. Kazakhstan’s official list, as reported by Zakon.kz on 3 March 2026, gives 102 for the police, 103 for an ambulance, and 101 or 112 for fire and rescue. 112 is the rescue service’s line, not a single number for everything.

When to go, how many days, and where next

We would give Almaty 2–3 days for the city and 1–2 more for the mountains or a day trip. If the mountains matter, avoid 19 October to 1 November 2026, when Shymbulak’s main lifts close for maintenance. Winter is ski season at Shymbulak; we have not checked the 2026–27 dates.

Almaty keeps Tashkent’s clock. Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Trade and Integration announced that the whole country would move to one time zone, UTC+5, at 00:00 on 1 March 2024. Older guides that put Almaty an hour ahead of Tashkent are out of date.

What can go wrong in Almaty?

The main planning issues are museum closing days, lift maintenance and payment methods. Here is what to check before you go.

• The National Central Museum closes on Tuesdays; the Kasteev museum on Mondays and the last day of each month.
• Shymbulak’s main lifts close from 19 October to 1 November 2026, and chairlift KKD-4 from 12 October to 9 November.
• Kok-Tobe’s cable car opens only at 13:00 on Tuesdays and closes on announced maintenance dates; in 2026 it shut from 5 to 12 April.
• Big Almaty Lake is a long walk now, with no private vehicles; we could not find an official distance.
• Almaty-1 station is closed to passengers during rebuilding; trains use Almaty-2.
• An unregistered local SIM is cut off after 30 days.
• Onay is the easiest way to pay on buses; we did not find an official cash fare.
• We could not confirm the Green Bazaar’s current hours or the cathedral’s visiting hours on official pages.
