Tajikistan visa and GBAO permit: 2026 rules by passport

Do I need a visa for Tajikistan? Check your passport first

Probably not if you hold a US, Canadian, Australian, Japanese, South Korean or EU passport: these get 30 days without a visa. The list comes from Government decree 464 of 26 October 2021 (52 countries from 1 January 2022), widened by decree 190 of 28 March 2024 (25 more from 1 May 2024), bringing all EU countries onto the list. The foreign ministry's consular department keeps the current table by country and passport type, plus a nationality checker. We read both on 24 September 2026, and the table below is taken from them. It covers ordinary passports only; diplomatic and service passports follow other rules.

Visa-free entry is for short visits: the foreign ministry says work, study or residence needs the matching visa before travel. Those visas are not covered here.

UK, India, China, Pakistan: which passports need a visa?

British, Indian, Israeli, Pakistani and Bangladeshi passport holders need a visa before they reach any land border. For each of them the consular checker lists three routes: the e-visa, a visa on arrival at Dushanbe airport, or a visa from a Tajik embassy. The UK has never been on either visa-free list, and the UK Foreign Office says British citizens must have a visa to enter. FCDO, updated 19 August 2026

Different rules apply to Chinese citizens. Citizens of 16 countries, including China and Vietnam, may enter without a visa for up to 14 days only if they are 55 or older (decree 190). The checker shows 14 days for a Chinese passport without repeating the age condition, but the decree and the consular table both carry it, so we follow them. Under 55, Chinese travellers need a visa; China is on the e-visa list published by the Tajik embassy in Tashkent. Caravanistan (July 2026) reports frequent e-visa refusals for Chinese applicants, so leave time for an embassy visa.

The rules for Turkish citizens have changed. Türkiye was on the 2022 list of 52, but the consular department's table and checker, read on 24 September 2026, show a visa requirement for ordinary Turkish passports and list only the airport visa on arrival and an embassy visa. We follow the current table; Turkish travellers should confirm with a Tajik embassy before booking.

If your passport is not in our table, use the consular checker: it gives the rule for about 200 countries and each passport type.

How does the Tajikistan e-visa work, and what does it cost?

You apply online at evisa.tj, pay by card and print the visa that arrives by email. The consular department lists US$30 for a single entry and US$50 for multiple entries, each for a stay of up to 60 days, plus US$20 if you add the GBAO permit. Consular fees, item 1.19

The e-visa is valid for 90 days, but you may stay no more than 60 calendar days, and it cannot be extended. The same consular e-visa page says e-visa holders are exempt from police registration and that your passport should, as a rule, be valid for at least six months.

   Run the consular checker. If your passport is visa-free and you stay 30 days or less, you do not need the e-visa for entry.

   Type passport details exactly as printed. The passport scan must be a JPEG (PDF is refused) of no more than 1 MB. Tick the GBAO permit if you are going to the Pamirs.

   No official processing time is published. The UK Foreign Office says allow at least two weeks; Caravanistan reports anything from 2 days to 2 months. Print the A4 visa and keep it with your passport.

Is there a visa on arrival in Tajikistan?

Only at Dushanbe airport, and we would not plan a trip around it. The consular department says citizens of 140 countries can get a visa at the Consular Bureau of Dushanbe International Airport, and that some visa types need an invitation confirmed in advance. Consular department: visa on arrival

Germany's foreign office says the airport visa needs an online application and electronic approval before travel, and that no visas are issued at land borders. The UK Foreign Office also says the visa on arrival must be pre-approved. Caravanistan wrote in July 2026 that British travellers were refused and deported in 2025 even though their nationality was on the list, and that GBAO permits are not available on arrival.

What is the GBAO permit, and where do you need it?

It is a separate entry permit for the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), the region covering the Tajik Pamirs, and you need it on top of your visa or visa-free entry. The Tajik embassy in Korea lists the areas the permit allows you to visit: Khorog, Darvoz, Vanj, Rushon, Ishkoshim and Murghob. Tajik embassy in Korea

In practice that means:

• The Pamir Highway (M41) from Kalaikhumb in Darvoz through Khorog to Murghab and the Kyrgyz border at Kyzyl-Art.
• The Wakhan valley and the Bartang valley, which Tajik operator Roof of the World lists among the areas needing the permit.
• Checkpoints along the way. The US State Department calls GBAO a restricted region for foreigners and says permits can be suspended at short notice. US advisory, 15 May 2025
• Children under 18 do not need one, according to Caravanistan (July 2026); none of the Tajik sources we read says this, so ask when you apply.
• Dushanbe, Penjikent, the Fann Mountains, Iskanderkul and Khujand lie outside GBAO and need no permit.

How do you get the GBAO permit?

There are four routes, and the right one depends on whether you need a visa. The consular department charges US$20 when the permit is issued with an e-visa or with a visa from a Tajik embassy or consulate (fee items 1.19 and 1.21). Sources disagree about embassies. Discover the Pamirs, a Khorog operator (updated 15 May 2026), says they cannot issue the permit; the Tajik fee schedule prices it for embassy visas, and Germany's foreign office says it can be requested with the visa. Ask your embassy first.

The permit is valid only for the dates printed on it. Caravanistan says it lasts 30 days at most and that you need a new one if you leave Tajikistan and come back; Discover the Pamirs says a permit issued with an e-visa is typically valid for up to 60 days. Check that the printed dates cover your entire stay in the Pamirs before you set off.

I'm visa-free: can I get the GBAO permit before I arrive?

Yes, but not as a stand-alone online permit. Caravanistan says visa-free travellers cannot apply for the GBAO permit online and must use OVIR, an embassy or a tour operator. Some operators suggest another route: buy the e-visa anyway, tick the GBAO box, and avoid the registration that a visa-free stay longer than 10 working days requires. Trek Tajikistan (page updated March 2026) recommends this for stays over 10 days. This is operator practice, not an official rule. The Tajik pages we read neither confirm nor rule out an e-visa for a visa-free passport, and the consular checker shows US and EU passports only the visa-free result. If the portal accepts your nationality, the cost is US$30 plus US$20.

Which places need a permit beyond GBAO?

Four areas need extra paperwork even when you hold a GBAO permit.

• Lake Sarez: an additional permit from the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defence. Russian foreign ministry Caravanistan (July 2026) quotes US$50 per person per day, accommodation included, from the committee's office on Lohuti Street in Dushanbe or through an operator.
• Zorkul reserve on the Afghan border: a separate permit, arranged by the Pamirs Eco-Cultural Tourism Association (PECTA) in Khorog or at an office in Murghab (Caravanistan).
• Tajik National Park: Trek Tajikistan says visits need a permit in addition to GBAO, usually arranged locally.
• The Khatlon border zone: land within 20 km of the Afghan border in Khatlon region, including Panj and Kumsangir, needs a permit from the foreign ministry's consular department. FCDO Canada advises against all travel within 10 km of the Afghan border. Travel.gc.ca, 9 September 2026

Do I have to register in Tajikistan, and by when?

Only if you stay longer than 10 working days on a visa-free entry or a regular visa. The consular department says foreigners must register within 10 working days of entry, that those who leave within 10 working days need not register, and that e-visa holders are exempt. Consular department: registration The 10-working-day rule is in Article 5 of Tajikistan's law on the legal status of foreign citizens.

Register at OVIR, the interior ministry's passport and registration service; in Dushanbe it is at Mirzo Tursunzoda Street 5. The UK Foreign Office says hotels are no longer permitted to register you and that each new address needs a new registration; the consular department gives five days to report a change of address. The interior ministry's tariff of 31 January 2024 is 178 somoni for up to three months (78 TJS duty plus 100 TJS service), about US$19 at the National Bank rate of 24 September 2026, or 128 somoni for CIS citizens.

Travel guides and operators count the days differently (Caravanistan includes weekends; Discover the Pamirs says 14 days), so register early. Skipping it is costly: the UK Foreign Office says you may not be allowed to leave until it is resolved and may face fines or detention, including at Dushanbe airport; the Russian foreign ministry cites a fine of at least US$500 and/or deportation.

Which land borders can I use with these documents?

You can enter overland from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Routes from China and Afghanistan require separate planning. Germany's foreign office says no visas are issued at any land border, so arrive with your e-visa or embassy visa already printed. Sources disagree about one crossing from Kyrgyzstan: Caravanistan (October 2025) describes Kulundu – Ovchi-Kalacha on the Khujand–Isfana road as a working crossing for all nationalities, while the Eurasia.travel moderators list it as closed to tourists. Ask locally before you plan on it.

What passport validity and cash rules apply?

Carry a passport valid for at least six months after arrival, with two blank pages (UK Foreign Office); the consular department also asks for six months' validity for an e-visa.

The UK Foreign Office says you may bring in up to US$10,000 without declaring it and take out up to US$3,000 without a declaration; the Russian foreign ministry also gives US$3,000 as the threshold for declaring on exit. We did not find a Tajik customs text to confirm the figures. Keep your entry declaration until you leave, as the UK Foreign Office advises.

Change money only at banks and licensed exchange offices: the Russian foreign ministry warns that exchanging outside them can bring a prison sentence of up to 7 years.

What goes wrong with Tajik visas and permits?

• Slow or stuck e-visas. No processing time is published, and Caravanistan reports failed payments and applications stuck in progress. We would apply at least three weeks ahead.
• Permits suspended. The US and UK governments both say Tajikistan can stop issuing GBAO permits at short notice. Germany's foreign office warned of entry restrictions, mainly overland, around the 35th independence anniversary on 9 September 2026, and of slower visa processing.
• Permit dates that don't cover your trip. You may not enter GBAO before the first date on the permit or leave after the last (Caravanistan). Ask for a spare day or two at each end.
• No permit at Kyzyl-Art. Coming from Osh, you must already hold the permit: it is not sold at the border.
• Unregistered at departure. The UK Foreign Office reports travellers detained at Dushanbe airport over missing registration.
• No extensions. The e-visa cannot be extended, and the UK Foreign Office says tourist visas cannot be either. After an overstay you need an exit visa from the foreign ministry, and exit visas are not issued at airports.
• Old information online. Embassy pages from 2019–2021 still describe a single-entry, 45-day e-visa. Every rule on this page carries its source and date for that reason.
