Which way should you take: road, train or plane?

For most travellers the road via Penjikent is the practical choice: it runs every day, costs about US$20 in fares and fits into one long day. The weekly train suits you if you are in Samarkand on a Tuesday and would rather sleep in a berth than change vehicles four times. Flying only works from Tashkent; we found no direct flight from Samarkand to Dushanbe.

Do you need a Tajik visa for this crossing?

Check this before you leave Samarkand, because you should not count on getting a visa at Sarazm. Tajikistan admits citizens of 52 countries visa-free for up to 30 days from 1 January 2022, including the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea, and added 25 more from 1 May 2024, bringing all EU member states onto the list. The UK, India, Israel and China are on neither list.

Citizens of China and 15 other countries aged over 55 may enter visa-free for up to 14 days; younger travellers from those countries need a visa. Visa-free entry covers tourism and similar short visits only (Tajik foreign ministry). The Tajik embassy in Korea lists the e-visa at US$30 single entry or US$50 multiple entry, for a stay of up to 60 days; apply only through evisa.tj. Germany's foreign office (checked 24 September 2026) says e-visa holders may enter by air at Dushanbe or overland from Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan, and that no visas are issued at land borders.

Registration is the other rule. The Tajik foreign ministry says visa-free and standard-visa visitors must register with the internal affairs authorities within 10 working days. The foreign ministry's consular department adds that visitors who leave within 10 working days need not register, and its e-visa page says e-visa holders are exempt from registration. Passports must be valid for at least six months after arrival, with two blank pages (UK Foreign Office).

How do you get from Samarkand to the Jartepa checkpoint?

Take a taxi to Kaftarxona bus station on the eastern side of Samarkand, then a minibus (marshrutka) or shared taxi to the Jartepa checkpoint. The drive from central Samarkand to the border takes about 40–50 minutes. Ask for Jartepa, the name of the Uzbek post; the Tajik post on the other side is Sarazm.

These fares come from travellers, not from a published tariff. In May 2025 a traveller paid 12,000 UZS for a Yandex Go ride from his guesthouse to Kaftarxona and 20,000 UZS for the minibus to the border. A travel blog updated in September 2026 quotes 7,000 UZS a seat in a shared taxi from Kaftarxona. Agree the price, and whether it is per seat or for the whole car, before you get in.

Crossing at Jartepa–Sarazm on foot

Whether foreigners may use this crossing is not settled on paper. The Uzbek Customs list of border posts gives Jartepa as open round the clock and classes it as a bilateral post, which normally means only Uzbek and Tajik citizens may cross. In practice, foreigners have crossed: a traveller on a Swedish passport crossed in May 2025 in “no more than 20 minutes”, a travel writer who has crossed several times says it usually took her about two hours in total, and a Tajik tour operator describes 30–60 minutes for the pedestrian crossing. Uzbek Customs reported in April 2026 that up to about 5,000 people and 350 vehicles pass through Jartepa a day. No published rule settles whether that applies to other passports, so confirm with the Uzbek Customs Committee (+998 55 502 76 00) before you go.

The Uzbek Customs list gives the post as open round the clock. Cross in the morning anyway: Tajik-side taxis fill during the day, and an early crossing keeps the mountain road in daylight.

   Leave Uzbekistan at Jartepa

   Show your passport at Uzbek passport control and go through customs. Our cash and customs guide gives the declaration limits. Keep your Uzbek registration slips to hand: the May 2025 traveller was not asked for them, but they are your proof if an officer does ask.

   Walk through the neutral strip

   The stretch between the two posts is crossed on foot, so pack so that you can carry your own luggage.

   Enter Tajikistan at Sarazm

   Show your passport and, if your passport needs one, the printed visa. Customs may look through your bags.

   Change a small amount of money

   The May 2025 traveller changed 200,000 UZS into 150 TJS at the border. Change only what you need for the taxis and count it before you walk away.

   Take a shared taxi to Penjikent

   Taxis wait outside the Tajik post and reach Penjikent in 15–25 minutes. Agree whether the price is per seat or for the whole car.

How long is Penjikent to Dushanbe, and what does it cost?

Allow 3–5 hours and 140–150 somoni a seat in a shared taxi, as reported in 2025. The road is about 231 km (our OpenStreetMap calculation) and runs via Ayni, then through the Anzob (Istiqlol) tunnel, a 5.2 km tunnel about 80 km north-west of Dushanbe.

Shared taxis to Dushanbe leave from Penjikent bus station. In May 2025 a traveller paid 140 TJS there and reached Dushanbe a little over three hours later, at the northern taxi stand. Asia-Plus, a Dushanbe news outlet, reported in January 2025 that the Penjikent taxi fare had risen to up to 150 TJS from 100–120 TJS, and that the Asian Express bus (70 TJS) had been suspended because of dangerous winter roads.

Tajik Air launched a Dushanbe–Penjikent flight in January 2025 at 400 TJS (Asia-Plus); we could not confirm it still flies in 2026.

If the border takes longer than expected, sleep in Penjikent and take the Dushanbe taxi the next morning. Seven Lakes trips and Penjikent day trips from Samarkand are separate plans.

Can you do Samarkand to Dushanbe in one day?

Yes, if you start early. Adding the leg times on this page gives roughly 6–9 hours from a Samarkand hotel to Dushanbe: about an hour to the border, 20 minutes to 3 hours at the two posts, 20 minutes to Penjikent, a wait for the taxi to fill, and 3–5 hours of mountain road. This is our calculation from reported times, not a trip we timed.

We suggest leaving Samarkand by 08:00. An early start leaves time for border delays and helps you reach the Anzob tunnel before dark. If the crossing takes most of the morning, sleep in Penjikent rather than start the mountain drive late.

Is there a train from Samarkand to Dushanbe?

Yes, once a week. Train 302 leaves Tashkent on Tuesday afternoon, leaves Samarkand at 19:48 and reaches Dushanbe at 09:47 on Wednesday, according to the Uzbek railway booking system for the train of 29 September 2026. It does not go via Penjikent: it runs south through Karshi, Kumkurgan and Denau, and crosses the border between Sariosiyo and Kudukli.

The booking system shows the train and its fares, but for trains leaving Uzbekistan it states that tickets can be bought only at ticket offices (“Билеты можно приобрести только в кассах”). Buy at the Samarkand or Tashkent station ticket office and take your passport. On 24 September 2026 the Samarkand–Dushanbe search for 29 September still showed 42 open berths and 126 compartment berths available; that is one dated check, not a promise for your date.

Timetables disagree by up to 1.5 hours. Tajik Railways' 2026 timetable and the 2022 Uzbek launch notice give a 16:15 Tashkent departure; the Uzbek schedule page and Tajik Railways give a 09:33 Dushanbe arrival. We follow the booking system for the actual train: 14:48 and 09:47. Its journey times match the clock times at both ends, so Tashkent and Dushanbe keep the same time. Check the time printed on your ticket.

Can you fly, or take a bus from Tashkent?

There is no direct flight from Samarkand to Dushanbe: Yandex Schedules, checked 24 September 2026, finds none and lists only a past service. From Tashkent, Somon Air, Uzbekistan Airways and Centrum Air fly to Dushanbe in 50 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, on days that vary by airline and season.

Tashkent's city transport portal lists a Tashkent–Dushanbe bus on Tuesdays and Fridays at 16:30 from the Tashkent bus station at Olmazor metro, about 8 hours, for 315,000 UZS (page updated 27 June 2026). It does not say which border the bus uses, so ask when you buy the ticket.

From Tashkent there is also the northern road through the Oybek crossing to Khujand, then a shared taxi to Dushanbe (150–200 TJS, Asia-Plus, January 2025). From Samarkand, Penjikent is far shorter.

What cash, documents and mobile service do you need?

Carry a little Tajik somoni, your passport and the papers each country's rules ask for. Rules for carrying medicines out of Uzbekistan are in Is Uzbekistan safe?.

• Tajik somoni (TJS) for the taxis. The Central Bank of Uzbekistan rate on 24 September 2026 was 1 TJS = 1,276.50 UZS.
• Uzbek customs rules on leaving: see our cash and customs guide. If you will not come back, spend or change your remaining sum before the border; money in Uzbekistan covers cash and cards.
• A passport valid for at least six months after arrival, with two blank pages (UK Foreign Office advice for Tajikistan).
• Your Uzbek registration slips from hotels or guesthouses; the rules are in our visa and registration guide.
• A printed Tajik visa if your passport needs one.
• An Uzbek SIM is set up for Uzbekistan (SIM and eSIM guide). Check roaming with your provider, or plan to buy a Tajik SIM, before you rely on mobile data for the Dushanbe leg.

Going the other way: Dushanbe to Samarkand

Take a shared taxi from Dushanbe's Chorbogh stand to Penjikent: 80–150 TJS a seat and about 5 hours, according to Caravanistan's October 2025 update. From Penjikent a taxi to the Sarazm post cost 15 TJS a seat or 60 TJS for the car in late 2025, 15–20 minutes. Tajik taxis stop at the border; walk across and take an Uzbek shared taxi from Jartepa to Samarkand, reported at about 8,000 UZS a seat or 32,000 UZS for the car, 40–50 minutes.

By train, 301 leaves Dushanbe on Monday at 19:26 and reaches Samarkand at 08:42 on Tuesday (Uzbek railway booking system, train of 28 September 2026). Coming back into Uzbekistan, the Uzbek entry rules apply again: check your visa-free days or e-visa entries in our visa and registration guide.

What can go wrong on this route?

• A bilateral post. The Uzbek Customs list classes Jartepa as a bilateral post, normally for Uzbek and Tajik citizens only. Foreigners have crossed, but confirm with the Uzbek Customs Committee (+998 55 502 76 00) before you go.
• Short closures. Jartepa was closed to travellers from 5 to 16 September 2022 for repairs (Kun.uz). In June 2026 Uzbek Customs said a reconstruction of the post is planned; if the works start, restrictions may follow at short notice.
• Pressure at the border. A travel blog updated in September 2026 relays second-hand reports of bribe demands of up to US$100 in 2025, while the first-hand May 2025 report describes a quiet crossing with no questions asked. We cannot verify either account. Do not pay unofficial fees, and keep your papers in order.
• Taxi touts. Drivers on both sides push high prices. Agree per seat or per car before your bags go in the boot.
• Customs checks. Uzbek Customs reports finding undeclared jewellery (April 2026) and 500 psychotropic pills (July 2026) in passengers' luggage at Jartepa. Declare what the rules require, and carry prescriptions for your own medicines.
• Winter. In winter drivers raise fares because of difficult roads and avalanche risk, and the Penjikent–Dushanbe bus was suspended (Asia-Plus, January 2025).
• The weekly train. Miss Tuesday and the next train 302 leaves a week later, and tickets for trains from Uzbekistan are sold only at station ticket offices.
• Old information online. Many pages still quote 2022 fares or the 16:15 train time. Every number on this page carries its date for that reason.
