What do the US, UK, Canadian, German and Australian governments say?

All five ask for more caution than usual and single out the Afghan border; they differ on how far to stay away. Australia is the strictest, then Canada; the UK names no area to avoid. We read each advisory on 24 September 2026; the table gives their own wording and dates. None of the five puts Dushanbe in a higher-risk category than the rest of the country.

The US row comes from the State Department's own advisory data feed, because its web page blocks automated reading; open the State Department page before you rely on it. The advisory was reissued on 15 May 2025 and the feed shows no change since.

Does the advice affect my travel insurance and the Pamir Highway?

It can, particularly on the Pamir Highway. Between Kalaikhumb and Khorog the M41 runs beside the Panj, the border river; in August 2026 bullets from a fight on the Afghan bank reached houses in Darvoz. Sputnik Tajikistan. On our reading of the map, most of that stretch lies inside Canada's 10 km zone and inside what Australia calls the border region. Darvoz, Kalaikhumb and everything east of them are also in GBAO.

What that means for your cover depends on your policy. The FCDO says insurance should cover your itinerary and planned activities; the State Department says to check evacuation and medical cover with your insurer; Canada expects that a serious illness or injury will need medical evacuation. We suggest asking your insurer, in writing, whether GBAO and the Afghan-border belt are covered under your own government's advice, and whether helicopter evacuation from high altitude is included.

What is happening on the Afghan border?

Attacks from Afghanistan killed five Chinese workers in November 2025, and stray fire from fighting on the Afghan bank killed a Tajik woman in August 2026. The table lists what Tajik state bodies and local media reported. Germany says attacks by militants and drug smugglers on Tajik border troops and Chinese workers have become more frequent since November 2025, sometimes with drones carrying explosives. The border itself is closed to travellers: Canada says the land border has been closed since the Taliban takeover in 2021, and Germany says crossing anywhere is illegal. In Khatlon, the FCDO says areas within 20 km of the border, including Panj and Kumsangir, need a permit on top of your visa. FCDO entry requirements.

A traveller who drove the whole border road in late May 2026 described military patrols and new border-fence works up to Kalaikhumb, heavily guarded Chinese construction camps after it, and a calmer stretch after Ishkashim; the military sends away anyone camping in exposed places. Caravanistan forum, 20 June 2026. That is one report, not an assessment. Germany advises against camping in these areas because of mines.

Is the Pamir region (GBAO) open, and what happened in 2022?

Yes, with a permit, but it can close to foreigners at short notice. GBAO needs a separate travel permit on top of your visa or visa-free entry, and both the US and the FCDO say the government can stop issuing permits to tourists at short notice for security reasons. Border Guard patrols may ask for your passport and permit, particularly near the Afghan border. FCDO regional risks.

The FCDO lists serious disturbances in 2021 and violent clashes in and around Khorog since 2022, with casualties, an increased security presence and some roads in Khorog and Rushan temporarily closed. Canada says the authorities strongly repressed demonstrations in 2022 and shut down the internet and other communications. Germany warns that renewed clashes could again bring access restrictions for foreigners, road blocks and mobile and internet cuts.

Tourists are still driving the route (the June 2026 report above). We found no notice of a permit suspension in September 2026 but have not asked the Tajik foreign ministry; the FCDO says the Tajik embassy can tell you whether permits are being issued.

Are the Kyrgyz and Uzbek borders safe now?

Calmer than at any time since 2021. Presidents Rahmon and Japarov signed the border treaty in Bishkek on 13 March 2025 (Khovar), and the same day the Guliston – Kyzyl-Bel and Madaniyat – Kayragach crossings reopened after almost four years. All five crossings had been closed after the armed conflict of May 2021. Asia-Plus. The FCDO says there have been no clashes since the 2025 agreement.

Landmines and sudden border closures remain risks. The FCDO warns of unexploded mines and sudden restrictions on movement, Canada says some checkpoints remain closed or restricted, and Australia still says reconsider travel to the Kyrgyz and Uzbek border regions. On the road from Osh over the Kyzyl-Art pass, a Kyrgyz special permit has not been needed since July 2025, according to a moderated travel forum. Eurasia.Travel, 31 July 2025. On the Uzbek side, Canada notes that Uzbekistan declared its demining finished in 2020 but says mines are still a risk, and the US lists unexploded ordnance along the Uzbek-Tajik border. How dangerous are the roads, from the Pamir Highway to the Anzob tunnel?

Roads are the risk you are most likely to meet. Outside Dushanbe, the FCDO and Canada describe potholes, unpaved surfaces, poor lighting, badly maintained vehicles and unpredictable driving; petrol stations are rare outside towns and there are no breakdown services (FCDO). Canada and Germany both advise against driving at night, and Germany says the security forces run numerous checkpoints and may check your documents and visa anywhere. Auswärtiges Amt.

The Pamir Highway is open but not fully repaired after spring and winter floods (FCDO). Its Kalaikhumb–Vanj section has been rebuilt by a Chinese company since 2022; the Chinese crews stopped on 1 December 2025 after the Darvoz attack. Asia-Plus. Avalanches, rockfall and mudslides close mountain roads, above all in the Pamirs (Canada), and Germany reports diesel rationed at Dushanbe filling stations and unavailable in parts of the countryside.

The road from Dushanbe north to Penjikent and Khujand goes through the Istiqlol tunnel, which travellers still call the Anzob tunnel: 5.2 km long, at about 2,700 m, 80 km north-west of Dushanbe, with new ventilation, lighting and fire-safety systems being fitted. The FCDO and Canada call this road particularly dangerous in winter because of ice, and the FCDO says drivers caught by an avalanche there can be stuck for a long time. FCDO safety.

• Travel by day and fill the tank in towns: both are the advisories' own advice.
• In a shared taxi, ask for a car with rear seatbelts; the FCDO says many have none.

Landmines, altitude and earthquakes: what are the mountain risks?

Stay on roads and marked trails. Germany reports poorly marked minefields on both sides of the Dushanbe–Khorog road between Kalaikhumb and Khorog and unmarked ones near the Uzbek, Kyrgyz and Afghan borders. The US adds the Vakhsh and Rasht valleys and says never to cross red-and-white plastic tape; the FCDO names the Tavildara area, mined during the civil war.

The eastern Pamir is high: Ak-Baital, the highest point of the Pamir Highway, is 4,655 m (Klub Gidov), and the FCDO lists altitude sickness as a risk. Medical care outside Dushanbe is basic or absent, mountain rescue relies partly on volunteers with limited equipment, and mobile coverage in remote areas is patchy. FCDO health. The state emergency committee does rescue people: on 10 July 2026 its team brought a Russian hiker stranded on a peak in Varzob down safely at 16:20, after a 15:00 call. KChS.

Earthquakes happen country-wide, most of all in GBAO (FCDO). On 13 April 2025 a quake centred 21 km from Rasht reached 5–6 points at the epicentre and 3 in Dushanbe. KChS. Canada recalls the 2023 avalanche that hit Khorog, and the FCDO warns of mudflows from melting glaciers in late spring and summer. Russia's foreign ministry advises climbing in groups of at least five with a local guide who knows the route, carrying satellite or radio communication and telling someone your route. MID RF.

What crime do visitors run into, and is it safe for women?

Petty theft and the occasional mugging, mostly in Dushanbe. The FCDO says pickpocketing is common in markets and on public transport; Canada calls violent crime against foreigners rare, and Russia's foreign ministry describes street crime in Dushanbe as low. Germany adds occasional robberies on routes near the Afghan border, where drug trafficking is common. FCDO safety, Canada.

Women travelling alone may get unwanted attention or harassment (FCDO, Canada). Germany reports rare assaults on women travelling alone, sometimes with drugs, and the FCDO reports sexual assaults, including suspected drink spiking aimed at foreigners. Canada advises women to travel in groups and in daylight; the FCDO says never to accept lifts from strangers or acquaintances.

• Take licensed or pre-arranged taxis, never one already carrying a passenger, especially at night (FCDO).
• Carry enough cash: Tajikistan is mainly a cash economy and rural areas have no ATMs (FCDO). Use ATMs inside banks where you can.
• Never leave a drink unattended (FCDO); dress conservatively outside Dushanbe (Canada).

Which laws catch visitors out?

Pay particular attention to drug laws, photography restrictions, social media rules and document requirements. The drug penalties come from the Tajik Criminal Code (consolidated to 17 December 2025, read 24 September 2026); the rest is what the foreign advisories report.

Medicines: Russia's foreign ministry lists strong medicines without a prescription among goods banned from import, and Australia says codeine is restricted and all medicines should be declared on arrival. We found no official Tajik list, so carry the prescription and a doctor's letter for medicines that may be restricted.

Is Tajikistan safe for LGBT travellers?

Same-sex relations are legal, but discretion is the realistic advice. The criminal article was repealed more than 20 years ago, yet the Tajik outlet Asia-Plus describes near-total public rejection and no open community or organisations. Asia-Plus, 10 November 2019.

Canada reports psychological and physical abuse, extortion and blackmail of LGBT people, including by police, and says public affection between same-sex partners may lead to abuse. In October 2017 the authorities announced a register of 367 people, which Human Rights Watch says exposed them to detention and police extortion. Human Rights Watch. The FCDO, Germany and Australia all advise against public displays of affection.

Which emergency numbers should I save?

Save 102, 103 and the tourist police. The emergency services do not speak English (FCDO), and the ambulance operator is likely to speak only Tajik and Russian, so keep your address written in Russian. FCDO getting help.

The tourist police were set up on 24 April 2018 in the Interior Ministry, work in every region and have service points at the Dusti (Tursunzoda), Sarazm (Penjikent) and Fotehobod (Mastchoh) border crossings. Tourism Committee. Canada has no embassy in Tajikistan and covers it from Astana; Australia covers it from Moscow. Russia has an embassy in Dushanbe and a consulate general in Khujand.

What still goes wrong?

These are the problems the advisories and travellers' reports return to: GBAO permits suspended at short notice; borders that close without notice (FCDO); roads cut by landslides, floods and avalanches; no diesel in parts of the countryside (Germany); officials at Dushanbe airport asking for payment over allegedly wrong documents, which the FCDO says to report to the airport's consular bureau; and emergency lines with no English. Germany expected entry restrictions for foreigners, mainly overland, around the independence anniversary on 9 September 2026; we would check for similar notices before big holidays.

What we could not verify: the State Department's web page (we read its data feed); any number by test call; the 2017 Tajik report on the switch to 112, which would not load, so the 112 line rests on Canada alone; this month's GBAO permit status; and crime statistics for tourists, which we did not find.
