Where does the Pamir Highway run, leg by leg?

The Pamir Highway is the road from Dushanbe across the Pamir plateau to Osh in Kyrgyzstan, about 1,320 km by our OpenStreetMap calculation. Travellers still call it the M41, its Soviet road number; Tajikistan's transport ministry calls the eastern route the Dushanbe–Kulma highway, after the pass on the Chinese border.

Most of the Tajik part lies in Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO), which needs its own permit. The southern road via Kulob is paved to Kalaikhumb. From there to Khorog it follows the Panj river, the Afghan border, on a dirt road under reconstruction. East of Khorog, old cracked asphalt climbs onto a plateau at 3,600–3,900 m.

A northern road via Tavildara also exists; the UK Foreign Office warns of civil-war minefields around Tavildara, and we found no current report on that road.

How many days do you need for the Pamir Highway?

Plan 8–10 days from Dushanbe to Osh on the main road, or 10–14 days with the Wakhan valley. Borderless Expeditions, a Pamir operator, quotes 7–8 driving days for the main road and 12–14 days with detours (March 2026). Our plans add a rest day in Khorog and one on the plateau for altitude, closures and breakdowns.

The Wakhan detour leaves the road at Khorog, follows the Panj and Pamir rivers past Ishkashim and Langar with Afghanistan on the far bank, and rejoins the highway near Alichur over the Khargush pass (4,344 m). It adds about 170 km by our calculation and two or three days; the ordinary GBAO permit covers it, but the Zorkul reserve needs a separate one, which PECTA in Khorog can arrange (Caravanistan, July 2026). A full Wakhan guide is planned.

The Bartang valley from Rushon often closes in the spring thaw and is usually passable only from June to September (Borderless Expeditions); Lake Sarez beyond it needs its own permit, about US$50 per person per day with lodging (Caravanistan, July 2026).

Dushanbe to Osh or Osh to Dushanbe: which direction?

We suggest Dushanbe to Osh, because you gain height more slowly: two nights below about 2,100 m, then the plateau. From Osh you climb from about 1,000 m to Sary-Tash (about 3,160 m) or Karakul (about 3,930 m) in a single day.

The US CDC advises against going from low altitude to a sleeping altitude above 2,750 m in one day and, above 3,000 m, against raising your sleeping altitude by more than 500 m a day. No plan on this road meets that fully: day 4 of our main-road plan adds about 1,800 m. The Wakhan variant from Dushanbe comes closest, with nights at about 2,550 m and 2,830 m before the plateau.

From Uzbekistan, most travellers reach Dushanbe from Samarkand via Penjikent in one long day: see Samarkand to Dushanbe via Penjikent. From Osh, our Tashkent to Bishkek guide covers the Dostuk crossing to Andijan and the flights to Bishkek, and the Fergana Valley itinerary the Uzbek side. Staying in Kyrgyzstan? How do you get around: shared jeep, driver, self-drive or plane?

Shared jeeps and minivans cost little but leave only when full and barely stop; a private car with a driver lets you choose your stops, but you pay for the whole car regardless of passenger numbers. There is no official tariff: the table shows the newest dated prices we found.

Shared 4x4s to Khorog leave Dushanbe early in the morning from the stand for Badakhshan. Departure times change as road works progress: in August 2023 travellers were told to arrive by 4:30–6:00 because the road closed at midday beyond Kalaikhumb; in March 2024 jeeps left no earlier than 9:00 (Caravanistan forum). Journeys took 16–17 hours in 2023 and nearly 24 by minibus in July 2024.

East of Khorog, shared cars run to Murghab and towards Osh when full, mostly early in the morning. We found no fare for these legs dated 2025 or later; ask your host. Since summer 2025 local cars can cross Kyzyl-Art again (Caravanistan, October 2025), so seats to Osh should be easier to find than in 2023–2024.

Caravanistan's car-with-driver listing says prices rose from its earlier US$900–1,000 budget figure because of border-crossing issues; ask whether fuel, the driver's food and lodging and the empty return are included. In our view self-drive suits only a 4x4 and a driver who can make roadside repairs; Borderless Expeditions quotes about US$150 a day plus a US$300–400 pickup fee (March 2026).

Cyclists ride the same road on the same permit; a separate cycling guide is planned. At Kyzyl-Art, Caravanistan says you need not pay the bicycle import tax guards sometimes demand (October 2025). Hitchhikers find thin traffic between Langar and Alichur and between Murghab and Karakul (Journey Beyond Horizon, 2025).

What papers do you need, and where are they checked?

You need the documents required to enter Tajikistan and a GBAO permit. Tajikistan's consular department charges US$20 for the permit when it is issued with an e-visa or with a visa from a Tajik embassy or consulate (fee items 1.19 and 1.21). The Tajik embassy in Korea lists the areas the permit allows you to visit: Khorog, Darvoz, Vanj, Rushon, Ishkoshim and Murghob.

That list leaves out the Shughnon and Roshtqala districts, although the highway crosses Shughnon between Khorog and Murghab; Caravanistan says a permit issued with the e-visa covers the whole region (July 2026). We could not settle this from an official text, so check that the permit you receive covers every district on your route.

Visa-free travellers (the US, all EU states, Japan, Korea and others) cannot add the permit online; they get it at the migration office (OVIR) in Dushanbe or Khujand, at some Tajik embassies, or through a tour operator. Permits run for up to 30 days, and under-18s need none (Caravanistan, July 2026). UK, Indian, Israeli, Turkish and Chinese (under 55) ordinary passports need a visa first (consular department country table).

Posts along the road check the permit: a Russian driver counted six between Kulob and Murghab in 2023, including Rushon and Khorog, plus one on the road south from Khorog to Ishkashim (roadstravel.ru). Borderless Expeditions writes that without a permit you turn around outside Kalaikhumb (July 2026).

Registration: the consular department says foreigners register within 10 working days of entry, that those who leave within 10 working days need not register, and that e-visa holders are exempt. Caravanistan says visa-free travellers entering at Kyzyl-Art can register in Murghab.

06

How does the Kyzyl-Art border with Kyrgyzstan work?

The Pamir Highway enters Kyrgyzstan over the 4,282 m Kyzyl-Art pass: Tajik post Kyzyl-Art, Kyrgyz post Bor-Dobo. It is open to foreign travellers, and since July 2025 the extra Kyrgyz notification required in 2023–2025 is no longer needed (Eurasia.Travel forum moderator, 31 July 2025; confirmed on forum.awd.ru by a traveller who crossed in early August 2025).

Opening hours are not officially published. Caravanistan (October 2025) and the Eurasia.Travel moderator say 24/7, but the same forum's table lists daylight hours until 18:00. Cross in daylight anyway: there are no services on the pass, and Caravanistan notes that people have needed rescue there.

With your own car or motorbike, the only charge due on the Tajik side is the vehicle import fee, says Caravanistan, which reports guards also asking for sanitation, road and border taxes (October 2025). We found no official schedule of the fee.

  1. 1

    Tajik post below the pass

Exit stamp and permit check, about 2 km inside Tajikistan (Journey Beyond Horizon). Coming from Osh you need the GBAO permit before you arrive.

  2. 2

    No-man's land

The Kyrgyz post at Bor-Dobo is about 22 km beyond the pass, with no transport between the posts: if you have no vehicle, you will need a lift or face hours of walking at 3,500–4,300 m.

  3. 3

    Bor-Dobo to Sary-Tash

Kyrgyz entry, then about 20 km (some 45 minutes by car) to Sary-Tash and the paved road to Osh (Caravanistan).

07

Is the Pamir Highway safe right now?

The everyday risks are the road and the altitude; travel along the Afghan border brings additional risks. After Kulob the road follows the Panj river, with Afghanistan on the other bank, through Kalaikhumb to Khorog, and again through the Wakhan (Journey Beyond Horizon). That stretch lies inside the zones Canada and Germany advise against, and the US says reconsider travel to all of GBAO.

You cannot cross into Afghanistan from this road. Caravanistan lists the bridges at Khorog and Ishkashim as closed until further notice and names Shir Khan Bandar–Panji Poyon, far to the south-west, as the only open crossing (October 2025); Canada says the land border has been closed since 2021.

Two recent incidents happened in Darvoz, between Kalaikhumb and Khorog. On 30 November 2025 attackers from Afghanistan killed two Chinese road-contractor workers at Shodak (Tajik ministries via Asia-Plus). On 13 August 2026 gunfire from the Afghan bank, during fighting between Taliban units and a local commander, killed a young woman in Dashtak (Sputnik Tajikistan, Pamir Inside); Tajikistan sent a protest note the next day.

A traveller who drove the border road in late May 2026 reported army patrols and fence works before Kalaikhumb, armed guards at Chinese road camps after it and a calmer feel after Ishkashim, and advised driving by day (Caravanistan forum, 20 June 2026). Germany also advises daytime travel and no camping in border areas, and warns of poorly marked minefields on both sides of the Kalaikhumb–Khorog road.

Ask your insurer in writing whether it covers areas your government advises against, including evacuation; Germany warns that fast medical help for altitude sickness cannot be expected in the Pamirs. See our Tajikistan safety guide for more detail.

08

What is happening with the Kalaikhumb–Vanj road works?

China Road and Bridge Corporation is rebuilding the 109 km Kalaikhumb–Vanj section as a 92 km road with two tunnels (3.4 and 1.8 km) and 14 bridges, under a contract that ran from 20 September 2022 to 20 September 2026 (Tajik transport ministry, via Asia-Plus). We found no report on the works after that date.

The section was formally opened during the president's visit on 28 June 2025 (Khovar), but work continued: in January 2026 the ministry reported 12 of 14 bridges done and the top asphalt layer on 44 of 78 km. Chinese crews left after the 30 November attack and returned under armed guard from April 2026 (Times of Central Asia). Expect dust, one-lane stretches and changing departure times; ask your host about closures the day before.

09

When is the road open: May, summer, September, October?

June to September is the season. Borderless Expeditions calls May unpredictable, with snow on the high passes, says the road stays open through at least mid-September and sometimes into early October, and that from late October to April heavy snow closes the high passes (March 2026).

Summer has its own closures. Germany warns that hot weather in the Pamirs brings floods, landslides and mudflows that cut roads; Canada warns of avalanches after heavy snow and of winter roads fit only for 4x4s. Even in summer it can turn cold and snowy between Karakul and Sary-Tash, so pack a warm jacket (Journey Beyond Horizon).

10

Where do you sleep, and what about cash, fuel and signal?

You sleep in homestays and small guesthouses. Borderless Expeditions quotes US$15–30 a night in a homestay with home-cooked meals and US$15–35 in a yurt around Karakul and Murghab, with simple heating, squat toilets and hot water only sometimes (March 2026). Caravanistan lists Khorog guesthouses at 95–140 somoni (about US$10–15) with breakfast (October 2025). PECTA in Khorog is a good first stop for local information (Borderless); we suggest asking each host to phone ahead to the next.

Carry cash: ATMs exist in Dushanbe, Penjikent, Khujand and Khorog and beyond those you rely on what you carry (Borderless, March 2026), and Germany recommends US dollars or euros outside the capital. Withdraw or exchange enough somoni in Khorog for your time on the plateau, and some Kyrgyz som or dollars for Sary-Tash.

Fuel stations are few in the mountains; in September 2026 Germany reported diesel rationing in Dushanbe and no diesel available in some rural areas (Auswärtiges Amt). Self-drivers should fill up wherever they can and carry a reserve.

Most of the road above 3,000 m has little or no mobile signal; the eSIM Borderless tested worked only in Dushanbe, Kalaikhumb, Khorog, Ishkashim, Langar, Alichur and Murghab (March 2026). Download offline maps before Khorog.

11

What goes wrong on the Pamir Highway?

These are the problems to plan for. Before you go, see all our Tajikistan guides, visa and GBAO permit rules and safety advice.

  • Altitude. The climb from Khorog to the plateau is far faster than CDC guidance. If you feel ill, go down: the CDC says symptoms improve quickly after a descent of 300 m or more.
  • Permits suspended. The US warns that Tajikistan can suspend GBAO permits for foreigners at short notice; Germany, that renewed unrest could bring road blocks and phone and internet cuts, as in 2022.
  • Closures, cash and fuel. Road works, landslides and mudflows close sections for hours or days, there are no ATMs east of Khorog, and diesel was short in September 2026. Keep a spare day and a cash reserve.
  • Long shared-jeep days. 14–24 hours in a full jeep or minibus, with tyre changes on the way (Caravanistan forum, 2023–2024).
  • The Kyzyl-Art gap. No transport across the no-man's land, no official hours, and demands for invented fees (Caravanistan, October 2025).
  • What we could not confirm. 2026 shared-jeep fares, Kyzyl-Art hours and the road works after 20 September 2026. Check these locally: many pages still quote fares from 2019–2023 and the Kyrgyz permit that ended in 2025.

Common questions

How many days do you need for the Pamir Highway?

Plan 8–10 days from Dushanbe to Osh on the main road, or 10–14 with the Wakhan detour. Operators quote 7–8 driving days for the main road; the extra days are for rest at altitude and for closures.

Can you do the Pamir Highway on public transport?

Yes, in shared jeeps and minibuses that leave when full. A Dushanbe–Khorog seat cost up to 400 somoni (about US$43) in January 2025 and the trip takes 14–24 hours; east of Khorog we found no dated fare since 2025. There is no transport across the Kyzyl-Art no-man's land.

Is the Pamir Highway open in May or October?

Only partly. Operators call May unpredictable, with snow on the high passes, and say the road stays open through at least mid-September, sometimes into early October. From late October to April heavy snow closes the high passes.

Do you need a permit for the Pamir Highway?

Yes, the GBAO permit, checked at posts from the Kulob road to Kyzyl-Art. It costs US$20 with a Tajik e-visa or embassy visa; visa-free travellers get it at OVIR in Dushanbe or Khujand, at some embassies or through an operator. The extra Kyrgyz notification for Kyzyl-Art has not been needed since July 2025.

Which direction is better: Dushanbe to Osh or Osh to Dushanbe?

Dushanbe to Osh, for the altitude: you spend two nights below about 2,100 m before the plateau. From Osh you climb from about 1,000 m to more than 3,000 m in a single day.

Is the Pamir Highway safe?

The everyday risks are the road and the altitude. Canada advises against all travel within 10 km of the Afghan border, which covers the Kalaikhumb–Khorog stretch and the Wakhan; in Darvoz, attackers killed two road workers on 30 November 2025 and gunfire from Afghanistan killed a local woman on 13 August 2026. Drive in daylight and stay on the road.
