Which Russian passport does Uzbekistan accept?

The foreign-travel passport. Visa-free travel between the two countries rests on an intergovernmental agreement of 30 November 2000, in force since 24 November 2009. A protocol of 13 July 2005 replaced its list of Russian documents: diplomatic and service passports, the foreign-travel passport, the seaman's ID and the certificate of return to Russia. One trap if you check the law yourself: lex.uz publishes the agreement with its original 2000 annexes, which still list the internal passport. The 2005 protocol replaced those annexes. Agreement on lex.uz

Entry on an internal document is only under discussion. Presidential decree UP-87 of 15 May 2025 told the foreign ministry to open talks on up to 30 days' entry for Russian, Kazakh and Azerbaijani citizens with an internal document or ID card. How long can you stay, and when must you register?

As long as you like, by the Uzbek list. The foreign ministry puts Russia in the group of countries with an unlimited visa-free period, with Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Ukraine. Uzbek MFA, checked 24 September 2026

Some Russian travel sites quote a fixed maximum stay. Neither the MFA table nor the agreement and its protocol contain one, so we do not repeat it. The Russian embassy's page on temporary stay did not open for us. Before a stay of several months, ask an Uzbek consulate in Russia, for example the consulate general in Novosibirsk (consular questions +7 383 246-04-84, uzconsulate.ru).

Will Mir, Russian Visa or UnionPay cards work?

Mir and Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard will not. UZCARD suspended Mir service on its network from 09:00 on 23 September 2022, and we found no notice of a restart. The Bank of Russia said on 6 March 2022 that Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard work only inside Russia. UZCARD, Bank of Russia

UnionPay is the open question. The HUMO network has accepted UnionPay cards for payments and cash since March 2021. A Russian issuer, Rosselkhozbank, says it places no limits on its UnionPay card. No Uzbek source confirms that Russian-issued UnionPay cards go through, and we have not tested one. If you bring one, make a small purchase and a small withdrawal on day one, and carry your main budget in cash. HUMO, Rosselkhozbank

How do you pay without a working card?

With cash: bring US dollars or euros and change them for som at a bank counter. Rates, notes and where to change are in our money guide.

One new rule matters most to card-less travellers. Since 1 April 2026, alcohol, tobacco and fuel at filling stations can be paid for only by card or electronic payment (decree PF-246). Since 1 June 2026, hotels and restaurants may take cash for alcohol and tobacco again (decree PF-100); shops may not. Without a working card you cannot buy wine in a shop or fill a car yourself; if you travel by car, agree that the driver pays for fuel. How do you get there from Russia?

Mostly by air. On 24 September 2026 Yandex Schedules listed direct Moscow flights to Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench (for Khiva); the fastest Moscow–Tashkent flight takes 3 h 40 min. Uzbekistan Airways' schedule search lists 24 Russian cities. On 12 June 2026 the airline announced cuts to some Russia routes because of a jet-fuel shortage; passengers on cancelled flights can rebook free or take a full refund. There is also a train. No. 305 leaves Moscow Paveletsky at 06:05 and reaches Tashkent at 02:55 local time, 4 days 18 h 50 min later, on set dates (26 and 28 September and 3 October were next when we checked). It runs through Kazakhstan, so you still need the foreign-travel passport for Uzbekistan. Will people understand Russian?

Uzbek is the state language; the same article 4 of the Constitution commits the state to respect the languages of the peoples living in the country. Constitution, art. 4 No official figure says how many people speak Russian. Our own observation: in hotels, taxis and markets in Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara you can usually get by in Russian; in villages, keep a translation app ready.

You will not be the only Russian visitor. The national statistics committee counted 867,700 visits from Russia in January to August 2026, up more than 30% on a year earlier; only Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan sent more. Spot.uz, 17 September 2026

What goes wrong for Russian travellers

Most problems come from the document and the money, not from the entry rules.

• Arriving at the airport with only an internal passport, or with a child who has no foreign-travel passport.
• Relying on a Mir or Russian Visa card and running out of cash with no way to get more.
• Being unable to pay for wine in a shop or fuel at a filling station without a working card.
• An Uzbekistan Airways flight cancelled under the June 2026 cuts: ask for the free rebooking or refund.
• Staying in a flat for more than 15 days without the host registering you.
• Planning a long stay around a maximum quoted on a travel site rather than checking with a consulate.
