Nukus to Beyneu by train: crossing into Kazakhstan 2026

Which trains cross from Nukus to Beyneu, and when?

Plan around train 649. It leaves Nukus at 19:43 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, reaches Beyneu at 07:43 the next morning and runs on to Mangistau, the station for Aktau. Coming back, train 650 leaves Beyneu at 04:34 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and reaches Nukus at 16:42. We read these times on both railways’ booking sites, Uzbekistan Railways and Kazakhstan Railways, on 24 September 2026, for departures up to 14 November.

Kazakhstan Railways’ list of trains run by foreign railways (May 2026 timetable) also names a weekly Nukus–Beyneu pair, 651/652, and an Urgench–Beyneu pair, 653/654, both run by Uzbekistan Railways. Train 651 appears on the Uzbek site on Wednesdays, Nukus 05:00 → Beyneu 16:18, but no seats were offered on any date we checked. The Urgench train showed no seats either, and the Kazakh site said it does not run on the October and November dates we tried. Do not build a plan on either. KTZ train list

Long-distance trains between Russia and Uzbekistan or Tajikistan also pass through Beyneu. Most sold no seats for the Nukus–Beyneu leg. The exceptions were the Moscow–Dushanbe train, with berths from Beyneu to Nukus on some Saturdays, and a Khujand–Volgograd train with berths from Nukus on 26 September (11:47 → Beyneu 23:58). Both railways show local times, and Nukus and Beyneu use the same time zone (UTC+5).

How much does a Nukus–Beyneu ticket cost?

A platskart berth (open-plan sleeping car) from Nukus to Beyneu cost 345,540 UZS on the Uzbek site and 12,047 ₸ on the Kazakh site when we checked on 24 September 2026, about US$27–29. Kupe (a four-berth compartment) cost 574,780 UZS or 21,270 ₸ on the dates where it was on sale.

Each site charges in its own currency, so the cheaper one depends on the exchange rate on the day. Compare both totals in dollars before paying. The dollar figures here are our conversion at the rates the two central banks set for 24 September 2026: 11,814.05 UZS (Central Bank of Uzbekistan) and 445.65 ₸ (National Bank of Kazakhstan) to the dollar.

Is the road border at Daut-ota/Tazhen open?

No. The road checkpoint, Daut-ota on the Uzbek side and Tazhen on the Kazakh side, has been closed to people on foot, cars, buses and light trucks since 1 February 2025. Only lorries over 3.5 tonnes cross there. We found no official announcement of a reopening up to 24 September 2026. Here is the sequence of announcements:

• 30 January 2025: Kazakhstan’s State Revenue Committee announces the closure from 1 February, for three months of reconstruction, and sends people to the Beyneu–Karakalpakiya rail checkpoint. State Revenue Committee
• 19 May 2025: Uzbekistan’s Customs Committee reports the restriction extended to 1 September 2025. Customs Committee
• 3 September 2025: extended to 31 December 2025; the notice adds that extra Nukus–Beyneu passenger trains run for individuals. Customs Committee
• 29 December 2025: the Kazakh revenue department for Mangistau region says the Uzbek side is extending the restriction on people, cars and buses at Daut-ata, with no end date; the Kazakh post at Tazhen has had a technical launch. Kazinform
• 6 July 2026: Uzbek customs say construction at Daut-ota is due to finish this year and that freight keeps moving. Customs Committee
• 2 September 2026: NewTimes.kz describes Tazhen as closed to individuals, cars and buses and names the Beyneu–Karakalpakiya rail route as the way across. NewTimes.kz

What should you do when every date looks sold out?

Search both sites, search the whole route, and look again close to departure. Seats reappear (a September 2026 traveller put it down to unpaid bookings expiring), and the two sites do not show the same seats. On 24 September the Uzbek site showed no Nukus–Beyneu berths from 29 September to 31 October, yet it offered 60 kupe berths on the 26 September train, two days away.

The Kazakh site behaved the same way. It had no Nukus–Beyneu berths for 13 October, but 73 platskart and 58 kupe berths from Nukus to Mangistau on the same train. We have not confirmed with either railway that you may get off at Beyneu on a Mangistau ticket, so ask before relying on it.

   Search both railways

   Check the Uzbek site or its UzRail app and the Kazakh site; tickets.kz resells the Kazakh seats. Search Nukus–Beyneu, then Nukus–Mangistau. Our train-booking guide covers accounts and payment on the Uzbek site.

   Look about six weeks ahead

   On 24 September both sites offered seats up to 7 November and nothing later. That suggests sales open about six weeks before departure. Neither railway states this rule, so treat it as our observation.

   Set an alert and be quick

   A traveller who booked in September 2026 set an alert on tutu.ru, found that seats vanished while filling in the form, and got one on the fourth or fifth try after creating an account. Caravanistan forum, 8 Sep 2026

   Check the refund terms

   The same traveller bought an optional no-conditions refund on tickets.kz for about 3,000 ₸. That makes an early booking less risky if your dates might move. Read the terms on your own booking.

   Ask at a station, but do not count on finding a berth

   Two travellers at Aktau station on 19 September 2026 were told the next train with a seat to Nukus was on 21 October. The office could sell Aktau–Beyneu and Karakalpakiya–Nukus, but nothing across the border itself.

Is a tickets.kz ticket valid when you board in Nukus?

Travellers report that it is. On 2 February 2026 a traveller who had taken the train from Nukus to Aktau the day before wrote that they booked on tickets.kz and a printout was enough. Another traveller bought an e-ticket in Uzbekistan Railways’ UzRail app and rode from Mangistau to Nukus in late June 2026 without problems. Caravanistan forum

We found no statement from either railway on this, so these are dated traveller reports, not a rule. Kazakhstan Railways lists these trains as run by the Uzbek railway, and both railways sell them. We would carry a printout, a copy on the phone and the passport used for the booking. What happens at the border during the night?

Westbound on train 649, a February 2026 traveller reported the Uzbek exit check at about 3–6 am and the Kazakh entry check at about 7–9 am, so expect to lose most of the night. The same traveller found the train completely packed.

A June 2026 traveller going the other way had no air conditioning in platskart (27–31 °C inside) and advises against the berths next to the conductor’s compartment: on the Kazakh side the border officer calls passengers there and people end up sitting on those beds. • Uzbekistan exit: your passport and the registration records from your stays; see visa and registration. Cash rules for leaving: cash limits and customs.
• Kazakhstan entry: check that your passport can enter Kazakhstan without a visa. A Kazakh e-visa is valid for entry only through international airports, so e-visa holders cannot use Beyneu. Kazakh MFA
• QazETA, Kazakhstan’s electronic travel authorisation: the law has been in force since 25 August 2026, but the Interior Ministry said in September that during the pilot it is voluntary and free, and that not having one is no reason to refuse entry. BES.media, 7 Sep 2026
• Time zone: all of Kazakhstan has been on UTC+5 since 1 March 2024, the same as Uzbekistan, so nothing changes at Beyneu. Kazakh Ministry of Trade and Integration

Can you take a bicycle or bulky luggage?

Not reliably. On 2 September 2026 NewTimes.kz reported that two foreign cyclists with tickets from Beyneu to Uzbekistan were taken off the train at boarding because of their bicycles. They say staff had told them beforehand that the bikes would be fine. They stayed in Beyneu to work out another route. NewTimes.kz

We did not find either railway’s rule for bicycles on this international train. Before buying, ask at a station ticket office how a bicycle must travel, get the answer in writing, and have another transport plan for the bicycle. With a full train, large bags are also hard to stow.

How do you continue from Beyneu to Aktau or Atyrau?

The simplest way to Aktau is to stay on train 649, which reaches Mangistau at 16:47, 21 hours after leaving Nukus. The Kazakh booking site sends a search for ‘Aktau’ to Mangistau station, so book to Mangistau and plan the ride into town. If you get off at Beyneu, several Kazakh trains a day continue to Mangistau, and train 313 runs to Atyrau.

How do you get to Nukus from Tashkent or Khiva?

From Tashkent, the daily night train 054 leaves Tashkent South at 16:00 and reaches Nukus at 08:18 the next morning, then continues to Kungrad. Platskart to Nukus cost 258,610 UZS for 4 November. That leaves a day in Nukus before the 19:43 departure to Beyneu. Train 649 also stops at Kungrad, at 22:00, if you would rather board there. Uzbek timetable

From Khiva or Urgench, plan a road transfer to Nukus: on the dates we checked, no train from Urgench to Nukus had seats. The Aral Sea trip and the desert castles from Khiva both lie in this corner of the country, and the 13-day itinerary with the Aral Sea finishes nearby. The approach should get shorter: on 19 September 2026 President Mirziyoyev announced a Tashkent–Nukus high-speed train from March 2027 that should cut the journey from 16 to 7 hours. What if you cannot get a seat?

You can fly to Aktau with Centrum Air or go round by train through southern Kazakhstan, as the bilet.railways.kz planner suggests. The road crossings Kazakhstan named as alternatives in January 2025 (Konysbayev–Yallama, Kaplanbek–Zangiota, Syrdarya–Malik and Tselinny–Ok Oltin) all lie in the Tashkent region, far to the east of Nukus. Crossings on the Tashkent side, including the daily train to Almaty, are in Tashkent to Almaty.

What goes wrong on this route?

Most problems come from the closed road: one train, a lot of demand, and little room for error. These are the ones to plan for. More for this trip: Kazakhstan entry rules and QazETA and Kazakhstan guides.

• Sell-outs. A traveller who booked in early January 2026 saw every train sell out once news broke that the road border would stay closed. On 24 September 2026 the next available berth from Nukus to Beyneu was on 3 November.
• Heavy local demand. A June 2026 traveller notes many Uzbek workers on 30-days-on, 7-days-off oilfield rotations use the train; that traveller booked two days ahead and got the last berth.
• Short, hot nights. Westbound border checks run from about 3 to 9 am, and platskart had no air conditioning in June.
• Bicycles refused at boarding in Beyneu (2 September 2026).
• Listed trains with no tickets available. The 651/652 and the Urgench–Beyneu train appear in official lists but sold no seats when we checked, and ticket aggregators show different train numbers and days. Trust the two railway sites for your date.
• Things we could not verify: a railway statement on tickets.kz tickets in Nukus, the rule for bicycles, and how far ahead sales open.
