Kyrgyzstan trip cost and money: som, cards, cash

Is Kyrgyzstan inexpensive to visit in 2026?

For everyday spending, yes, but less so every month. A hostel bed, a day of meals and a minibus ride add up to about $33–36 on the prices we collected. Consumer prices, though, rose 12.0% in the year to August 2026 and 7.6% since December 2025, according to the National Statistical Committee.

Services are rising fastest. The National Bank's report for the second quarter recorded services up 18.9% over the year and food up 9.2%, and it expects inflation of up to 15% by the end of 2026 (Kaktus Media, 13 September 2026). Hotels, cafés, drivers and guides are all services.

So treat any price older than a few months as too low. Every figure on this page carries its date, and our dollar figures divide som by the 24 September 2026 rate. Budgets from travel blogs lag behind: Journal of Nomads, updated in March 2026, still converts at 95.68 som to the dollar and gives €400 or US$450 for seven days. We use it only as a cross-check.

How much does a day in Kyrgyzstan cost?

About 2,850–3,150 som ($33–36) per person on a budget, 3,950–5,450 som ($45–62) mid-range and 6,350–6,850 som ($73–78) in a lakeside sanatorium with meals, on a day with one intercity ride and one entry fee. These are our sums of the dated prices in the next section, not quotes and not our prices.

The beds are Issyk-Kul summer prices from Economist.kg's July 2026 survey, set out in our Issyk-Kul holiday cost guide. We found no dated survey for Bishkek or Karakol, so we use the lake figures everywhere. Food is the weakest line: the one dated local figure we found is about 1,700 som per person for a day of meals bought at a lakeside pansionat, and we use it as the food allowance. A day without an intercity ride costs 400–1,500 som less.

What do transport, beds, food and fees cost?

Transport and entry fees are cheap; beds in July and August are where the money goes. The table gives each price as its source published it, with the source's date. Prices from before 2026 carry their year. The Osh flight and road are compared in Bishkek to Osh, and the park day in Ala-Archa from Bishkek.

What do meals cost, and do you tip?

Allow about 1,700 som a day for meals; restaurants no longer add a service charge. That daily figure is what the Rokhat pansionat on Issyk-Kul charged for meals bought separately in July 2026 (Economist.kg); we found no dated local survey of café prices.

Since 1 January 2026, Cabinet of Ministers resolution No. 663 of 14 October 2025 has barred cafés and restaurants from charging a separate percentage for service. The menu price must be the full price, and only voluntary tips may be added (Kaktus Media, 15 October 2025). If a bill shows a service percentage, ask for it to be removed.

Menu prices rose instead. In January 2026, Kaktus Media reported that manty which had cost 300–400 som in restaurants now cost at least 500 (Kaktus Media, 14 January 2026). As a cross-check, Journal of Nomads (March 2026) puts a lunch in a local restaurant at about $9 and a mid-range three-course dinner at about $22.

What do treks, horse trips and yurt camps cost?

A guided multi-day trip can cost as much as a week of independent travel. These are dated operator or traveller figures, not official tariffs; our trekking and riding guides give them in full.

• Song-Kul yurt camps: from about $15 a night with meals at a basic camp (Caravanistan, September 2025) to $60–110 per person at the large Ak-Sai camp (Ak-Sai price list, 2026). Our Song-Kul guide holds the full price table, and yurt stays and CBT explains how booking works.
• A 3-day horse trek to Song-Kul: about 13,000–21,400 som per person, or $350–530 with a Bishkek operator that prices in dollars. Details and sources are in horse treks in Kyrgyzstan.
• The Trekking Union of Kyrgyzstan's 4-day Ala-Kul group trip: 19,900 som, about $228, at its summer 2026 price (TUK). See the Ala-Kul trek and the Kyrgyzstan trekking guide.
• Private car or 4WD by the day: we found no published tariff. One dated example: a guesthouse-arranged transfer from Karakol to Jyrgalan, 60 km, costs 4,000–5,000 som per car, against 150–200 som a seat on minibus 331 (Destination Jyrgalan, read 24 September 2026). Ask drivers for a price per day, waiting time, and who pays for their meals and night.

What does an 8-day trip add up to?

About 21,900–28,300 som ($250–324) per person for two people sharing, before the Altyn-Arashan night, flights and any guided trip. We priced our Kyrgyzstan in 8 days route line by line from the table above. It is public prices added up, not our price and not a quote.

The room is the biggest line and the season moves it most: the lake prices are high-season rates, and the Kapriz pansionat's 14,000-som double, for example, applied only from 9 July to 22 August 2026. Sharing halves every per-room and per-car line, and with inflation at 12% a year, a price from summer 2025 is about 12% too low today. Which months are high season: when to visit Kyrgyzstan. Flights, insurance, the valley night and anything you buy come on top.

What currency does Kyrgyzstan use, and where do you change money?

The Kyrgyz som (KGS). It is not the Uzbek so'm (UZS). On 24 September 2026 the National Bank's official rate was 87.45 som to the US dollar (NBKR), so 1,000 som is about $11.40.

Pay in som. The som is legal tender and must be accepted for every kind of payment: on 23 September 2026 the National Bank announced a 13,000-som fine on a Bishkek company that had refused it (Economist.kg). Tour operators and yurt camps often quote in dollars, so ask how they want to be paid before you book.

Bring US dollars or euros in clean notes and change them at a bank or an exchange office. Banks.kg, a local banking portal, says bank cash desks usually handle som, tenge, roubles, dollars and euros; exchange offices often give a better rate than banks, but not all of them hand over the receipt they are supposed to. Bishkek's largest cluster is around Abdrakhmanov and Moskovskaya streets. Journal of Nomads warns that worn or damaged notes are changed at a lower rate.

Can you pay by card in Kyrgyzstan, and do ATMs work?

In Bishkek, mostly yes; outside it, carry som. City buses have taken no cash since 1 July 2026: tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Elcart card, scan a bank QR code or buy a Tulpar card (Kaktus Media). The summer train to Balykchy was cheaper by card, 150 som, than in cash, 180 som.

Away from the capital it turns round. The Money, a Kyrgyz personal-finance site, wrote in May 2026 that cards work in hotels, supermarkets, chain cafés in Bishkek and Osh, fuel stations and taxi apps, but rarely in small guesthouses, markets, minibuses, souvenir stalls and mountain yurts, and not at all in villages. The minibus, shared-taxi, guesthouse and yurt prices on this page are cash prices.

Most ATMs pay out only som. Banks.kg names three banks whose ATMs also give dollars: Demir Bank, Bank Kompanion and Kyrgyzkommertsbank (Banks.kg). We found no Kyrgyz bank tariff that states a fee for withdrawals with foreign cards, so ask your own bank for its foreign-ATM charge and check the receipt after your first withdrawal.

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, decline and pay in som: The Money puts that conversion 3–7% worse than your bank's own rate. Some camps take card payment in advance: Ak-Sai accepts a transfer to a Visa card, a FreedomPay link or payment at its Bishkek office. We could not confirm whether Yandex Go accepts foreign cards in Kyrgyzstan.

Do Mir cards and Russian-issued cards work?

No. The Interbank Processing Centre, which runs Kyrgyzstan's national Elcart payment system, stopped serving Mir cards on 3 April 2024 after US sanctions on the Mir operator: no card payments, ATM withdrawals or card-to-card transfers (IPC).

Nothing had changed by July 2026. Kyrgyzstan's First Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet, Daniyar Amangeldiev, told Izvestia that the country stopped accepting Mir in 2024 and is looking for alternatives. Izvestia added that UnionPay cards from Russian banks work unreliably and are refused by many terminals (Izvestia, 16 July 2026). Visa and Mastercard cards issued in Russia do not work abroad either: the Bank of Russia said in March 2022 that cross-border payments with them are unavailable.

If your cards were issued in Russia, bring cash. The National Bank publishes a daily rouble rate (1.03 som in the rate set on 24 September 2026), and bank cash desks list roubles among the currencies they change.

What does a SIM or eSIM cost?

About 330 som ($3.80) for four weeks. The operator O! sells an eSIM to foreigners on any passport through its My O! app; its July 2026 promotion was an unlimited plan for 330 som. You register and activate it after landing, once you are on the network, and a plastic SIM is sold in O!Store shops against your passport (O!).

A local number makes taxi and delivery apps easier. Germany's foreign office says a phone used with a Kyrgyz SIM card for more than 30 days must be registered (Auswärtiges Amt); the Kyrgyzstan entry guide has the rest of the rules. We did not compare other operators.

What goes wrong with money in Kyrgyzstan?

Running out of cash away from Bishkek is the usual problem.

• Cash places: minibuses, village guesthouses and yurt camps mostly want som in cash, so change enough in Bishkek or Karakol before heading into the mountains.
• Cash on a Bishkek bus: since 1 July 2026 drivers may not take it. On the first day, a foreign passenger holding out a 20-som note was asked to get off (24.kg).
• Two currencies in one trip: camps and tour sellers quote in dollars, drivers and cafés in som. Compare at the day's rate, and remember that you can always pay in som.
• Old prices: blog budgets from 2025 miss a year of 12% inflation, and Journal of Nomads' March 2026 page still uses 95.68 som to the dollar.
• Leaving with too much cash: more than US$5,000 in foreign cash is barred for foreign citizens.
• Russian cards: Mir, and Visa or Mastercard issued in Russia, do not work.
• What we could not verify: ATM fees for foreign cards, café prices, bed prices in Bishkek and Karakol, the Altyn-Arashan night, and whether ride apps accept foreign cards.
