Flight, shared taxi or minibus: which should you choose?

For most travellers, flying is the most practical option: under an hour in the air against a full day on the road, for about twice the price of a taxi seat. Take the road if you want to see the Suusamyr valley and the Toktogul reservoir, and travel by day. Coming from Issyk-Kul, the new North–South road reaches Jalal-Abad and Osh without going back to Bishkek, but only by car and only until November.

The table compares the options. Flight times and fares were read on 24 September 2026; the taxi fare is from November 2025 and carries its year. Dollar figures are our conversion at the Kyrgyz national bank rate of 87.45 som to the dollar.

• Short trip, or you are going on into Uzbekistan or the Pamirs: fly, ideally on a morning flight.
• You want the mountains and have a spare day: a shared taxi or a car with driver, leaving early in the morning.
• You are on Issyk-Kul and heading south between June and October: a car on the North–South road.

Which airlines fly Bishkek to Osh, and when?

Four airlines fly the route several times a day: Aero Nomad, Sky FRU, Comair and Avia Traffic. On 24 September 2026 the Yandex Timetables board, which collects airline schedules, listed at least five departures from Manas airport on most days, from 05:15 to 18:45, taking 35 minutes to an hour. For fares, search in som on a Kyrgyz site or the airline's own site. On 24 September Tickets.kg showed a lowest fare of 4,488 som with Comair for 10 October (also for 11 and 24 October), and 5,140 som with Avia Traffic for 1 October. Fares change daily, so treat these as a snapshot, not a typical price. Tickets.kg: Bishkek–Osh

Check which airline you are booking. Kyrgyzstan's civil aviation agency lists the operating certificates of Aero Nomad, Sky FRU and Avia Traffic as valid, and TezJet's as annulled (register updated 26 August 2026). Tickets.kg still showed a 'TEZ JET' fare on 24 September, but the Yandex board listed no TezJet flight on the route. Winter dates were only partly loaded. On 24 September Avia Traffic was the only airline with a daily winter flight listed: 18:30 from 25 October to 24 March, except 31 December and 1 January. Aero Nomad and Sky FRU were listed only to 23–24 October, and Comair on dates through at least 20 October. Airlines often add winter dates late, so check your date before fixing the rest of the trip around it.

How do shared taxis work, and what do they cost?

A seat costs 2,000 som in a 7-seat van or 2,500 som in a car, the tariff Osh drivers set in November 2025, when they raised it from 1,500–1,800 som and cited fuel prices. Cars leave when they are full. The fare is 10 months old; confirm it when you book. TopNews.kg, 10 November 2025

Most seats are now booked through Telegram. Caravanistan's Osh transport page (updated July 2025) says shared cars between Osh and Bishkek are almost all arranged in a Telegram group, and suggests asking your guesthouse to book a seat the evening before; you are then picked up and dropped where you agree. A group in an October 2025 forum report paid 10,000 som for all four seats of a car, leaving Osh at 08:00 and reaching Bishkek around 21:00. In Bishkek the official departure point for Osh, Jalal-Abad, Batken and Talas is a temporary site in the west of the city, where the new Ak-Kula hippodrome is to be built, next to a traffic police post. City hall moved these routes there after the old Western bus station closed on 23 October 2024. Bishkek City Hall: departure points

That may change soon. A permanent Western bus station is being finished on the road to Manas airport, beyond the village of Prigorodnoye. On 24 September 2026 the building was 93–95% complete and no opening date had been announced. Until it opens, the Ak-Kula site is the one city hall names; ask your driver or hotel which one is working on your day. Bulak.kg, 24 September 2026

In Osh, Caravanistan names the new bus station and the corner of Masalieva and Navoi streets, in front of the Deluxe hotel, as places where cars to Bishkek gather. An April 2026 trip report found shared taxis and vans to Bishkek at the new Osh bus station on Lenin Street. We found no official Osh source for either point.

   Book the evening before

   Ask your guesthouse to reserve a seat in a Telegram shared-taxi group, or go to the departure point early in the morning.

   Agree the terms

   Confirm the price per seat, the pickup time and where you will be dropped. Booking two seats gives you more room; booking all four reserves the whole car.

   Leave in the morning

   A morning start puts the passes behind you in daylight. The October 2025 group left Osh at 08:00 and arrived at about 21:00.

Is there a bus or minibus from Bishkek to Osh?

Yes, but buying ahead is hard for now. The Kyrgyz booking site Tezket lists a Bishkek–Osh bus, and on 24 September 2026 it showed online sales suspended until October 2026, with tickets on sale at the station. Tezket: Bishkek–Osh

Direct minibuses run in the warmer months. A traveller on 29 October 2025 found that the direct minibus to Osh had stopped a few weeks earlier because of snow on the pass; he took a shared taxi to Toktogul (1,000 som, about 3 hours) and a minibus from Toktogul to Osh the next day (700 som, about 10 hours). What is the road like? Too-Ashuu, Suusamyr and Toktogul

The Bishkek–Osh road is more than 670 km long, and Kyrgyzstan's Transport Ministry calls it the main route between the north and south of the country. It climbs to the Too-Ashuu tunnel, named after K. Kolbaev: 3,200 m above sea level, 2.6 km long, built in 1962 and last rebuilt in 2000. The tunnel is narrow enough that trucks pass in one direction at a time, and in summer up to 6,000 vehicles a day use the road. Transport Ministry: Too-Ashuu tunnel

After the tunnel the road drops into the Suusamyr valley, crosses the Ala-Bel pass into the Chychkan gorge, passes the Toktogul reservoir and follows the Naryn river gorge south past the Kurpsai and Tash-Kumyr hydro plants to Jalal-Abad and Osh, according to a route description by the tour operator Pamir Travel. To enjoy the scenery, travel during daylight. If you want to stop, Toktogul has a bus station and is the natural place to split the trip (see the October 2025 report above). We would plan a night there rather than a 13-hour day, and we would not take a night car.

Is the road open in winter, and is it safe?

Traffic runs in winter too, but snow and avalanches close the road for hours at a time. At 06:50 on 11 March 2026 an avalanche at the Ala-Bel pass (km 224) blocked the road in both directions; it reopened to cars at 11:30, while trucks stayed barred at the Sosnovka and Aral posts. The ministry warned of avalanche risk in the mountains from 10 to 15 March. Economist.kg, 11 March 2026

Snow can come early. On 16 October 2024 the ministry closed Too-Ashuu to trucks in snow and strong wind, and asked drivers to use winter tyres and carry chains. The UK Foreign Office says roads outside Bishkek are often blocked by snow in winter, and that many roads are poorly lit and not maintained. Kaktus Media, 16 October 2024, FCDO: Kyrgyzstan safety

The tunnel has also been closed for repairs in summer. From 12 to 18 July 2023 it was shut for set hours each day, and the police asked drivers to plan long trips ahead and avoid night travel. We found no repair notice for 2026. Kaktus Media, July 2023

Night driving is the risk we take most seriously. At 01:41 on 16 September 2026, at km 167 in the Suusamyr valley, a driver taking paying passengers fell asleep at the wheel and crossed into oncoming traffic; six people died, according to the Chui region traffic police. The North–South road via Kazarman: Issyk-Kul to the south

Kyrgyzstan's new second road between north and south runs 433 km from Balykchy, at the west end of Issyk-Kul, through Kochkor, Aral and Kazarman to Jalal-Abad. Before it opened, travellers from Issyk-Kul to Osh had to go back through Bishkek. Transport Ministry: North–South road, Kabar, January 2025

It is open for part of the year only. The Transport Ministry announced on 1 June 2026 that the road is open until November, from 06:00 to 20:00, with an axle limit of 11.5 tonnes; building work on avalanche galleries and bridges continues near the Kök-Art tunnel, and the tunnel toll is 100 to 5,000 som depending on the vehicle. The ministry describes the route as having no high passes: its highest point, about 2,500 m, is at the Kök-Art tunnel. A ministry engineer told the Kabar agency in January 2025, before opening, that Jalal-Abad to Balykchy would take about 6 hours instead of 13. Jalal-Abad to Osh is a further stretch of the main road.

Plan it with a hired car and driver. We found no scheduled bus or minibus on the route, and the 20:00 closing time means leaving Issyk-Kul early in the morning. Is there a train from Bishkek to Osh?

No. No passenger train runs between Bishkek and Osh: Yandex Timetables finds no direct train, and there is no rail line through the mountains between the north and the south of Kyrgyzstan. Arriving in Osh: the airport, then Uzbekistan or the Pamirs

From Osh airport to the city, take minibus 107 (eastern part of the city) or 142 (western part), which run from 06:00 to 21:00, or a taxi from 250 som, up to 40 minutes, according to the information site oss.port.kg, which says it is not the airport's official site. What goes wrong on this route?

Most problems come from the season and the clock: winter weather on the passes, long days on the road, and flight schedules that are not yet loaded.

• Night cars: the fatal crash of 16 September 2026 happened at 01:41 with a driver carrying passengers for pay who fell asleep. Travel by day.
• Winter closures: avalanches and snow close the passes for hours (Ala-Bel, 11 March 2026), trucks are held at Sosnovka, and the direct minibus stopped for the winter in late October 2025.
• The North–South road closes for the winter from November; no closing day had been announced by 24 September 2026.
• Winter flights: on 24 September only Avia Traffic had a daily flight listed for the winter; Aero Nomad and Sky FRU were listed only to 23–24 October.
• Departure points in Bishkek: the Ak-Kula temporary site may move when the new Western bus station opens; no date had been set on 24 September.
• Tickets: Tezket's online bus sales were suspended until October 2026, and a 'TEZ JET' fare still appeared on Tickets.kg although the airline's certificate is listed as annulled.
• Summer tunnel repairs: Too-Ashuu has closed for set hours in past summers (July 2023); none was announced for 2026.
• What we could not verify: a 2026 shared-taxi fare, an official Osh departure point for cars to Bishkek, and whether any scheduled transport uses the North–South road.
