Best time to visit Kazakhstan: weather, lakes, skiing

Which season suits your trip?

Choose the month by the part of Kazakhstan you most want to see. The south and the Almaty foothills, the northern steppe around Astana and the mountains above Almaty each have their own season, and a month that suits one can be wrong for another.

The table below is our advice. The climate figures, dates and closures behind each row are sourced further down the page.

How different are Almaty, Shymkent and Astana?

Almaty and Shymkent lie in the south, at the foot of the mountains; Astana is on the open steppe in the north, where January is about 9 °C colder than in Almaty.

Kazhydromet, the national weather service, publishes official 1991–2020 norms for Almaty (station at 851 m), Shymkent (604 m) and Aktau on the Caspian. It has no such page for Astana, so the Astana column is our own calculation: the 30-year average of daily temperatures from the ERA5 reanalysis, pulled through the Open-Meteo historical weather API. These are model averages, not station records. We ran the same query for Almaty and Shymkent: it came within 2 °C of Kazhydromet's norms in every month, close enough to choose a season but not for exact comparisons.

Rain follows two patterns. Almaty is wettest in April (112 mm) and May (99 mm) and driest in September (28 mm). Shymkent gets most of its rain from November to March and almost none in summer: 3 mm in August.

What is open, closed or risky each month?

Most closures in Kazakhstan happen in the mountains, not in the cities. The table lists the dated ones we could source for 2026. Winter rows use last season's dates, labelled as such, because the resort had not published 2026–27 on 24 September 2026.

Is spring a good time to visit?

Yes for Almaty, Shymkent and Charyn Canyon; less so for the high mountains. By Kazhydromet's norms, Almaty warms from 2.7 °C in March to 16.5 °C in May, and Shymkent from 6.3 °C to 18.7 °C. The trade-off is rain: April and May together bring Almaty 211 mm, almost a third of its annual rainfall.

Skiing does not stop in March. In spring 2026 Shymbulak said that Kazakhstan's ski season usually ends in late March or early April, that the resort normally stays open longer than others, and that after heavy snow in late February it expected good skiing until at least mid-April. It then cut ski-pass prices by 30% under its spring «Bәйшешек» tariff.

For Charyn Canyon, our Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy guide suggests April–May or September–October, because the canyon floor is hot in summer. Canada's travel advice notes that earthquakes can set off avalanches in the mountains, especially in spring, so check local warnings before a mountain walk.

Nauryz, the spring new year, is a public holiday from 21 to 23 March; the holiday table below shows how it falls in 2027.

How hot is summer, and what about mudflows?

Hot in the south, warm in Almaty and mild in Astana. July is the warmest month everywhere: Shymkent averages 26.5 °C and has reached 47.2 °C (1958); Almaty averages 23.7 °C; our model puts Astana at about 20 °C, with afternoons around 26 °C. Aktau on the Caspian averages 24.8 °C.

This is the season for the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes and for walks from the top of the Shymbulak lifts. Up at the lakes it is cold outside the middle of the day: AlaGo, cited in our Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy guide, says mornings and evenings can drop to +10 °C or lower even in July.

The mountain risk in summer is mudflows. Almaty's emergency department says the season usually runs from mid-June to the end of September, sometimes into October, until the moraine lakes turn to their winter state. In early July 2026, after a mudflow threat and evacuations in Almaty's Nauryzbai district, it refused to call any mountain route safe (BES.media, 2 July 2026). Kazselezashchita, the mudflow protection service, warned of danger again for 21–23 July 2026 (Kursiv, 21 July 2026).

What that means for a summer trip, in the emergency department's own advice: follow the warnings, do not pitch a tent near riverbeds, dams or moraine lakes, and leave a dangerous area at once if heavy rain starts upstream. We would also leave one day flexible: spend it in the city if a warning is issued, and visit the lakes on another day.

Why September, and how late can you go?

September is the best month to combine the city, the mountains and a visit to Uzbekistan. Almaty averages 17.3 °C with 28 mm of rain, its driest month; Shymkent averages 19.5 °C with 9 mm. The Shymbulak lifts run until 18 October 2026, and the lake season lasts into early October.

October still suits Almaty's streets at 9.8 °C on average, but the mountains start to close. Shymbulak shuts its KKD-4 chairlift from 12 October to 9 November 2026, and the Medeu–Shymbulak, Kombi-1 and Kombi-2 lines from 19 October to 1 November, for maintenance (Shymbulak).

The road from Medeu to Shymbulak is closed to private cars until 30 November 2026 for engineering works. Walkers can still go up: the resort points them to the Student Trail, which starts at the bus 12 and 21 terminus by the Medeu dam (Shymbulak).

November falls between seasons: Almaty averages 1.5 °C, the summer lifts have stopped and skiing has not started. Last winter the resort opened its first slopes technically on 26 November 2025 (Kursiv). We would not plan a mountain trip for November.

Can you go to Kazakhstan in winter?

Yes, for skiing or an Almaty city break, if you plan for cold and smog. Last season Shymbulak opened technically on 26 November 2025 and charged its highest prices in the high season from 25 December 2025 to 11 January 2026; the resort says skiing costs about 30% less on average in low season (Kazinform, 26 December 2025). The 2026–27 dates and ski-pass prices were not published on 24 September 2026. Lifts, passes and the ski season are in our Shymbulak and Medeu guide.

The Medeu ice rink will not open this winter. Almaty's akim said in December 2025 that its reconstruction runs until the fourth quarter of 2027 (Kazinform, 7 December 2025). The Almaty guide covers the Medeu area and the gondola.

Astana has a different winter. Our model average for January is about −15 °C, with nights around −19 °C, and Canada's travel advice warns that temperatures in Kazakhstan can fall below −30 °C, with winds that make it feel below −50 °C. In Almaty the January norm is −6.1 °C.

Air quality is the other winter issue. Canada describes pollution in Almaty and Astana as severe, particularly from November to March. Kazhydromet's January 2026 bulletin listed Almaty, Astana and Turkestan among the places where it rated air pollution as high, and on 31 January 2026 the service warned of smog in Almaty and at night in Astana during calm, foggy weather (Zakon.kz). That warning advised people with lung or heart conditions to carry their medicines outdoors.

How long are the days, and what time is it?

Since 1 March 2024 the whole of Kazakhstan has used one time zone, UTC+5, the same as Tashkent (Ministry of Trade and Integration). Winter days are short in the north: by our calculation Astana has less than eight hours of daylight at the December solstice, against about nine in Almaty.

On a winter day trip to Charyn or a ski day, we would leave at first light and plan to be off mountain roads by dark.

How do you combine Kazakhstan with Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan?

Go in September, or split the trip by season. Our Uzbekistan season guide recommends April to early May, or the second half of September to October, for Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. In autumn, start in the mountains and finish in the cities: Almaty and the lakes in early September, then Tashkent and the Silk Road cities in the second half of the month, as the heat eases. Tashkent and Almaty are linked all year by the daily Talgo train, about 18 hours, and by flights of about 1 h 30 min; see Tashkent to Almaty. The two cities keep the same clock.

Which public holidays affect your dates?

Kazakhstan's Law on Holidays lists Republic Day and nine state holidays, and the Labour Code adds two religious days off. When a holiday falls on a weekend, the next working day is off (Law on Holidays, article 5). A 2026 amendment moved Constitution Day from 30 August to 15 March, from 2027.

We suggest booking trains and mountain hotels early for Nauryz, the May holidays and New Year.

What could spoil your month?

Mostly the mountains and the air. These are the things we would check before fixing dates.

• Mudflow warnings, mid-June to September. The emergency department can advise against mountain trips at short notice, as it did in July 2026. Keep a city day in reserve.
• Lift maintenance gaps. Shymbulak services its lifts twice a year, in spring and autumn; in 2026 the main lines are shut from 19 October to 1 November.
• The road to Shymbulak. Closed to private cars until 30 November 2026; buses 12 and 21 run to Medeu, and the gondola goes up from there.
• New Year crowds and prices. Last season's high-season window ran from 25 December to 11 January.
• Smog and cold, November to March, in Almaty and Astana.
• Heat in the south. Shymkent averages 26.5 °C in July; plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning.
• Frozen lakes and a snowbound Kaindy road in winter.
• Not yet published on 24 September 2026: Shymbulak's 2026–27 opening date and prices, and any government order moving 2027 days off.
