Shymbulak and Medeu 2026: gondola, skiing, prices

What are Medeu and Shymbulak, and what is open?

Medeu is the gondola base on the edge of Almaty, and Shymbulak is the ski resort above it, open all year. In 2026 you can ride the lifts and walk at the top, but the Medeu skating rink is shut.

The high-altitude rink sits in the gorge at 1,691 metres (Zakon.kz, 24 December 2025). The city is rebuilding it: work began in autumn 2025, and the Almaty city administration plans to finish in the fourth quarter of 2027 (Kazinform, 7 December 2025). Tengrinews reported in December 2025 that the viewing platform on the dam above the rink, and the long stairway up to it, stay open to visitors. For the winter of 2025–26 the city set up 11 seasonal rinks around Almaty instead; we found no list for 2026–27 yet.

Shymbulak describes itself as lying between 2,200 and 3,180 metres inside Ile-Alatau National Park, with 17–20 km of runs, up to 920 metres of vertical drop and 10 lifts (Shymbulak, about the resort). Its gondola from Medeu opened in 2010. From the Shymbulak base station, the Kombi-1 and Kombi-2 lifts continue to the top station, which the resort gives as 3,200 metres, and the open chairlift KKD-4 starts from the base as well.

How do you get to Medeu, and can you drive up to Shymbulak?

Take bus 12 or 21, or a taxi, to the Medeu base station, then ride the gondola. Until 30 November 2026 there is no other practical way up for visitors, because the road above Medeu is closed to private vehicles.

Bus 12 leaves from the Dostyk–Kurmangazy stop and bus 21 from Dostyk–Zholdasbekov. Both run daily from 07:00 to 20:00, every 30 minutes, to the Medeu base station, according to the resort. By car or taxi it is 13 km south along Dostyk Avenue from Al-Farabi Avenue. Buses take an Onay card or app; our Almaty guide has the city fares.

From 24 July to 30 November 2026, private traffic is barred from the Medeu–Tuyuk-Su road while engineering networks in the Shymbulak area are rebuilt. Only emergency services, residents and special vehicles may pass (Shymbulak, 23 July 2026). Walkers can still go up. The resort names the Student Trail (Studencheskaya tropa) as the walking route: it starts at the bus 12 and 21 terminus by the Medeu dam, passes below the dam and leads to the Gorelnik visitor centre (Shymbulak, 24 July 2026). We found no official distance or walking time for it.

The resort's how-to-get-there page still lists an eco-bus from the Medeu rink to the Shymbulak base at 800 tenge one way, but its closure notice of 23 July names only the gondola. We follow the notice. Plan on the gondola until 30 November, and call the resort on +7 727 331 77 77 before you rely on the eco-bus.

More limits are coming after the closure. On 18 September 2026 Almaty's city council (maslikhat) approved rules for traffic above Medeu: petrol and diesel cars restricted, electric cars on weekdays only, and all vehicles barred at weekends and on holidays, except residents and emergency and utility services (Zakon.kz; Kazinform). The decision still needed the mayor's signature and had no start date (Informburo). The city also plans about 15 electric shuttles between Medeu and Shymbulak by the end of 2026, a 15-minute ride every 10 minutes, once the vehicles are certified (Informburo). For a winter trip, plan on the gondola.

Which lift ticket should you buy?

For a first visit, buy the return Shymbulak Ticket. For 12,000 tenge (adults from 15) or 4,000 tenge (children 6–14) it takes you from Medeu to the top station at 3,200 m and back on three lines.

The resort's ticket guide of 4 September 2026 explains the rest. A one-way ticket (7,000 tenge) suits people who plan to walk down or stay overnight. The 360° ticket uses a cabin with a glass floor on the same route. If you are already at the Shymbulak base, a Kombi-1 and Kombi-2 return costs 7,000 tenge at the ticket desk. For a night in the mountains there is a 3-day ticket: one ride up and one down within three days.

Tickets are sold at the Medeu ticket office and in the resort's online shop. Online walker tickets are valid only on the day of purchase, and boarding stops 30 minutes before a line closes. Children up to 5 ride free every day. Other concessions, such as free weekday rides for pensioners, apply on weekdays only, and most of them only to Kazakhstan residents with original documents (resort concessions), so most foreign visitors pay the full fare.

Parking at Medeu costs 500 tenge an hour in the open car park and 1,000 tenge in the covered one, the resort's tariff page says.

When do the lifts run in 2026, and when does winter start?

The summer season runs to 18 October 2026. After two weeks of maintenance, the resort had announced nothing on 24 September about November or the ski season.

Shymbulak services its lifts twice a year, in spring and autumn, and its hotel and one bar stay open during the autumn work (Shymbulak, 15 September 2026). It has not said what runs between 2 November and the start of skiing. Last winter's dates below show the usual pattern; they are not this winter's dates. What is skiing at Shymbulak like, and when is the season?

Expect skiing from late November or December to about mid-April, with the busiest and dearest days around New Year. Those are last winter's dates; the resort has not yet announced the 2026–27 season.

Last winter the technical opening on 26 November 2025 covered only the upper Left Talgar runs and the beginner slopes, because warm weather held the rest back (Kursiv, 26 November 2025). Low-season prices followed from 6 December and the high season from 25 December to 11 January. In spring the resort cut ski-pass prices by 30% from 2 April 2026 and expected good snow until at least mid-April (Shymbulak, 2 April 2026).

The resort lists 17–20 km of runs with up to 920 metres of vertical drop, from beginner slopes to the upper Left Talgar lift, which its hours page gives as 09:30–16:00. Kazinform reported 4,000 to 12,000 visitors a day on average.

Last season the main rental area and the seasonal lockers moved down to the Medeu base station, and the Shymbulak base kept only short-term lockers (Kursiv). Tengrinews put ski or snowboard rental with boots at roughly 5,000 to 15,000 tenge a day across Kazakhstan's resorts in January 2026.

What did a Shymbulak ski pass cost last winter?

A full-day adult pass cost 15,500 tenge in December 2025 at low-season prices (Kazinform, 19 December 2025) and 26,000 tenge during the New Year high season (Tengrinews, 8 January 2026). These are last winter's prices. The 2026–27 prices were not on the resort's website on 24 September 2026, and we will add them when they are announced.

The resort now uses low, regular and high seasons and says low-season prices are on average 30% lower. We found no published price for the regular season, mid-January to March 2026, so the table shows the two points we could source. Walkers paid more in the New Year window too: 5,000 tenge one way on the gondola (Kazinform, 26 December 2025).

Are there other ski areas near Almaty?

Yes. In January 2026 Tengrinews listed Oi-Qaragai, with 26 runs of about 28 km in total, and the small Ak Bulak resort next to Shymbulak. Both were a little cheaper at New Year prices. We include them only for comparison.

Walking at the top, and staying safe in the mountains

In summer the lifts are the easy part. The risks are cold, fast-changing weather at 3,200 m, mudflows in the valleys, and in winter avalanches beyond the marked runs.

The UK Foreign Office warns of a high risk of avalanches, landslides and rockfalls in Kazakhstan's mountains, weather that changes quickly, and snow at altitude even in summer. It says Almaty's 24-hour mountain rescue teams are based in the Shymbulak gorge and at Big Almaty Lake, and that the numbers to call are 109 or 112 (FCDO). Mudflow season in the Almaty mountains usually runs from mid-June to the end of September, sometimes into October. In July 2026 the city's emergency specialists advised against mountain trips in this period and told anyone already out to keep away from river channels, dams and moraine lakes (BES.media, 2 July 2026).

Beyond the lift stations, the resort's own advice is to study the route, check the forecast, tell someone your plan, carry water, food, a first-aid kit, a torch and a charged phone, and not to take hard routes alone (Shymbulak Outdoor, 25 June 2026). We do not give hiking routes here.

In winter, the resort posts the avalanche danger level on boards across the slopes, and the emergency department sends it by SMS. It asks skiers not to cross the nets and warning signs, to ride off-piste only with a beacon, probe, shovel and a partner, and to hire a guide if they lack experience (resort avalanche rules). Its ski patrol reported two off-piste rescues in February 2026 alone (Shymbulak, 17 March 2026).

How much time do you need, and when should you go?

In summer, half a day covers the gondola ride and a walk at the top; skiing takes a full day. That is our advice, not a resort figure.

In our 3-day Almaty plan, Shymbulak is day 2, with the walk to Big Almaty Lake as the alternative, because both need a full morning and are reached by different roads. What can go wrong?

Most problems come from closures, holiday prices and mountain weather. Here is what to plan around.

• The rink is closed. Older tour listings still sell Medeu as a skating trip. The city plans to finish rebuilding it in the fourth quarter of 2027.
• Maintenance gaps. From 19 October to 1 November 2026 no lift runs to the top, KKD-4 stays shut until 9 November, and the resort has not said what runs between then and the ski season.
• No road until 30 November, and new limits after that. If the gondola stops, visitors have no car alternative, and the eco-bus is unconfirmed. The council's weekend ban on all vehicles was approved on 18 September but not yet signed.
• Crowds. The resort says about one million people visit each summer, and it quotes Mastercard research naming Shymbulak as the most visited Almaty sight among foreign tourists (Shymbulak, 30 April 2026). Go early on a weekday.
• New Year prices. Last winter the full-day pass rose from 15,500 tenge in December to 26,000 tenge in the high season from 25 December to 11 January.
• Weather and power. It is cold at 3,200 m even in summer; mudflow season runs from mid-June to September; power cuts stopped the lifts twice in 2026.
• What we could not confirm. The 2026–27 season dates and prices, the eco-bus during the road closure, when the new traffic rules take effect, and the city's skating rinks for this winter.
