Is Turkestan worth the trip after Samarkand?

Yes, if Timurid architecture is what brought you to Uzbekistan. The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkestan was built on Timur’s orders between 1389 and 1405, and building stopped when he died. UNESCO, which listed it in 2003, calls it one of the largest Timurid buildings and one of the most intact and a prototype for later buildings in Samarkand.

The UNESCO listing gives the detail. The building is 38.7 m high and has 35 rooms. It served as both mausoleum and mosque. Its main hall, the Kazandyk, sits under the largest dome in Central Asia. The main entrance and parts of the interior were never finished, so you can still see how it was built. UNESCO compares it with the Bibi Khanum mosque in Samarkand, which is of similar size, and says the Turkestan building has been better preserved.

Khoja Ahmed Yasawi was a 12th-century Sufi master, and his tomb is still a place of pilgrimage. The mausoleum is run by the national museum-reserve Äziret Sultan, whose website describes a building raised at the end of the 14th century on Timur’s orders.

Our view: one full day covers the mausoleum and the monuments around it. Shymkent, the city you pass on the way, is worth an evening if you are staying the night there, not a detour of its own.

Is there a direct train from Tashkent to Turkestan?

Yes, three times a week in each direction. These are Uzbek Railways’ long-distance trains to Russia: No. 305 to Moscow and No. 315 to Kazan. They leave Tashkent Central at 00:32 and reach Turkestan at 09:05, 8 h 33 min later. Both railways sell tickets from Tashkent to Turkestan on these trains.

We searched the Uzbek Railways booking site, eticket.uzrailpass.uz, for every date from 25 September to 5 December 2026, and Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) for 13–19 October. Both showed the same pattern each week, summarised in the table. The Uzbek site shows the return trains as 305Й and 315Г; KTZ numbers them 306 and 316. Every other cross-border train: Central Asia by train.

Tashkent Central is the station also called North; KTZ tickets print it as ТОШКЕНТ-ЙУЛО. The Talgo to Almaty leaves from the same station. Turkestan and Tashkent keep the same clock, UTC+5, so all times here are local at both ends.

Which days work for a round trip?

Only one combination is a true there-and-back without a hotel: board on Tuesday night, arrive on Wednesday at 09:05, leave on Wednesday at 19:47 and reach Tashkent at 04:55 on Thursday. By our arithmetic that gives 10 h 42 min in Turkestan. Every other combination needs at least one night in Turkestan, or the route via Shymkent for one direction. The Wednesday plan means two nights in a row in a berth and a 04:55 arrival in Tashkent, before the city wakes up. We would book the Tashkent hotel room from the night before, so you can go straight back to it.

How much are the tickets, and where do you buy them?

An open berth (platskart) costs about $27–33 and a berth in a four-berth coupe about $38–45, depending on the date and the site. Both official booking sites sell the Tashkent–Turkestan segment: KTZ’s bilet.railways.kz in tenge and Uzbek Railways’ eticket.uzrailpass.uz in som.

Prices change with the date. For 16 and 17 October, KTZ asked 13,436 ₸ for an open berth. On the Uzbek site, open berths ranged from 320,180 to 394,310 som and coupe berths from 426,080 to 525,880 som across departures up to 7 November. On 24 September both sites priced dates only up to 7 November. That fits KTZ’s site rules, which open sales 45 days ahead at 07:00 Astana time, which is also Tashkent time.

The same KTZ rules say that payment goes through Halyk Bank’s page, that it accepts Visa and Mastercard cards, and that the card must be enabled for online payments. They do not say whether cards issued abroad work. We stopped before payment on both sites, so we have not tested a foreign card or a foreign passport on this train. We have also not confirmed whether the ticket office at Tashkent Central sells the Turkestan segment to foreign passport holders; the Uzbek Railways line 1005 can answer. Can you go via Shymkent on any day?

Yes, with a night in Shymkent. The daily Talgo No. 1 leaves Tashkent Central at 14:41 and reaches Shymkent at 21:05; KTZ sold seats on that leg from 5,080 ₸ (about $11) for 15 October. The next morning, trains run on to Turkestan: KTZ listed nine departures from Shymkent on 15 October, taking 3 h 20 min to 3 h 42 min, with open berths from 3,009 ₸ (about $7).

KTZ’s planner also offers a connection the same evening, on train 055 at 22:57, which arrives in Turkestan at 02:24. We would not plan to arrive at that hour.

Coming back, a mid-afternoon train from Turkestan reaches Shymkent in the evening, and the Talgo leaves Shymkent for Tashkent at 06:25 the next morning. Can you go by road, or make it a day trip?

You can, but not in a single vehicle and not through the old main crossing. Gisht Kuprik on the Uzbek side and Zhibek Zholy on the Kazakh side have been closed for rebuilding since 5 February 2025. On 7 September 2026 the Turkestan regional paper Otyrar reported the Kazakh post as being prepared for launch, with exterior finishing under way. We found no report of it opening by 24 September. The working crossing is Navoi (Uzbekistan) and Kaplanbek (Kazakhstan).

From Kaplanbek, Shymkent is about 1 h 30 min by car, according to a Kazinform report from July 2025. A traveller’s report from April 2025 gives 1,500 to 3,000 ₸ per person for shared rides between Shymkent and the border. From Shymkent, take the train or a taxi to Turkestan, 162 km by road by our calculation on OpenStreetMap. Tashkent’s transport portal Tashtrans lists no bus to Shymkent or Turkestan, and Yandex Schedules finds no direct flight from Tashkent to Turkestan.

We do not recommend a day trip by road. It means about 290 km each way, by our calculation, plus two border crossings on foot and a change of car at each. The Yasawi mausoleum: tickets, hours and rules

One ticket covers the mausoleum, the Kyluet underground mosque and the old bath house. Foreign visitors pay 2,000 ₸, citizens of other CIS countries 1,500 ₸. The prices come from the museum-reserve’s price page, which cites the culture ministry’s order No. 307-НН, in force since 1 July 2025.

• Hours. The price page gives 08:00–19:00 daily, with no lunch break. The museum-reserve’s visiting rules give 09:00–18:00, or 08:00–20:00 in summer. Plan your visit between 09:00 and 18:00, when every version has it open. The office number is +7 72533 3-23-00.
• Free day. The rules make the third Sunday of each month free for all visitors.
• Dress. The rules ask visitors to wear covering clothes. This is a working pilgrimage site; we suggest covering shoulders and knees.
• Bags. Bags, backpacks and cases go into lockers at the entrance, and bulky luggage is not allowed near the museum. Visitors may be checked with a metal detector.
• Photos. The rules allow photography and filming in designated areas only; ask staff where.

What else is there in Turkestan, and how do you get around?

The mausoleum stands among smaller monuments, a large new tourist complex and, further out, two sites for a half-day trip. The station is about 7 km by road from the mausoleum, by our calculation on OpenStreetMap, so take a taxi.

• Mosques near the mausoleum. The museum-reserve lists the Juma mosque 120 m from the mausoleum, next to the Kyluet underground mosque; the Bab Arab mosque 620 m away; and the Zhaudir Ana mosque-madrasa 1 km to the south-east.
• Keruen-Saray. A tourist complex of 20.5 ha opposite the mausoleum, opened in April 2021, with a canal and boat show, a bazaar, hotels and restaurants, according to Kazakhstan Today. We did not check show times or prices.
• Sauran. A walled medieval town 44 km north-west of Turkestan. The museum-reserve’s page on Sauran describes walls enclosing an area of 850 by 660 m and standing 3–6 m high in places, with an excavated madrasa, a khanaka, a mosque and the rebuilt northern gate.
• Arystan Bab. The mausoleum of Arystan Bab in Otyrar district is about 57 km by road from the Yasawi mausoleum, by our calculation. We found no working official page with its hours or prices.

Is Shymkent worth a stop?

Worth an evening if you sleep there between trains; we would not add a day for it. Choose a hotel near the station: the Talgo from Tashkent arrives at 21:05 and the first useful morning train to Turkestan leaves at 08:02, so the night is short.

A 2022 overview by the Kazakh news site NUR.KZ picks out these sights.

• South Kazakhstan Regional Museum, founded in 1920, with more than 60,000 items.
• Abai Park, 52 ha, with fountains and a funfair.
• The Dendropark, a 117 ha arboretum laid out in 1979.
• The Baidibek Bi monument, which the article calls the tallest in the country at 23 m, on a hill 220 m high.

What documents do you need?

A passport, and for most Western travellers nothing more. Check two things first if you are on an e-visa for either country.

• Kazakhstan visa-free stay. The Kazakh foreign ministry’s table, updated 21 August 2026, gives ordinary UK, US and German passports up to 30 days visa-free, and Indian passports 14 days. Full rules are in our Kazakhstan entry guide.
• Kazakh e-visa holders cannot use this route. The foreign ministry says foreigners with an electronic visa may enter and leave only through international airports, so neither the train nor the road crossing is open to them. Every crossing, its class and hours: Central Asia border crossings and visas.
• QazETA. Kazakhstan’s electronic travel authorisation is still a free, voluntary pilot. On 7 September 2026 the Interior Ministry was reported as saying that not having one is no reason to refuse entry. No date for making it compulsory has been confirmed; see the entry guide for the latest.
• Coming back to Uzbekistan on an e-visa. A single-entry Uzbek e-visa ends when you leave for Turkestan. To come back on it you need a double-entry ($35) or multiple-entry ($50) e-visa, according to the Uzbek foreign ministry’s fee list. Visa-free travellers: see our visa and registration guide.

When should you go?

April–May and mid-September to October, by our reading of the figures below. Summer is hot: Kazakhstan’s weather service, Kazhydromet, gives Shymkent a July mean of 26.5 °C for 1991–2020 and a record of 47.2 °C (1958). Turkestan has no official climate page that we could find. Model averages for the town, which match Kazhydromet’s Shymkent figures to within a degree, put it 3–4 °C warmer than Shymkent in summer, with average July highs of 35 °C. In July and August, the Wednesday plan works in your favour: you are at the mausoleum when it opens and can spend the hottest hours indoors.

What can go wrong?

Most problems on this trip come from the timetable, not from the town. Here is what to check before you book.

• Boarding on the wrong night. The ticket date is the day after you board. A Wednesday ticket means Tuesday night at the station.
• Only three trains a week each way. Miss the Wednesday 19:47 and the next direct train back is on Thursday.
• Awkward hours. 00:32 out and 04:55 back. Arrange the Tashkent end in advance.
• Seasonal timetables. These trains run to Russia, and their days can change with the December and summer timetables. We checked dates up to 5 December 2026.
• Card payment untested. KTZ names Visa and Mastercard, but we have not completed a purchase with a foreign card on either site.
• The road border. Gisht Kuprik’s reopening has been announced for several dates and had not happened by 24 September 2026. Use Kaplanbek until it opens.
• Luggage at the mausoleum. Bulky bags are not allowed near the museum, and we found no official information on left luggage at Turkestan station.
• Summer heat. Model averages give Turkestan July highs of about 35 °C.
