What does the 21-day route look like?

It runs one way, east to west in autumn: four nights in Kazakhstan, seven in Kyrgyzstan and nine in Uzbekistan, 20 in all. Day 1 is your arrival in Almaty and day 21 your departure from Khiva, by train to Tashkent or by air from Urgench.

Only two moves have no scheduled train, bus or plane: the drive from Saty over the Karkara border to Karakol, and the mountain track to Altyn-Arashan. Book the Saty–Karakol transfer in advance. For Altyn-Arashan, arrange a vehicle or horses ahead of time, or walk. Almaty and Tashkent are in the same time zone; Bishkek is one hour ahead.

Why start in Almaty in autumn?

The mountain season ends while the Uzbek cities are still hot. This order lets you visit the mountains of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan first, then walk around Samarkand and Bukhara as the September heat eases.

Destination Karakol, the regional tourism organisation, gives June to early September as the high season for trekking around Karakol, with lower routes possible earlier or later if the weather allows (Destination Karakol). In Uzbekistan, the Uzhydromet climate bulletin gives a mean daytime temperature of 30–33 °C for the first half of September across most of the country and 26–29 °C for the second half (Uzhydromet, 27 August 2026).

Starting in Almaty between the last week of August and mid-September puts Altyn-Arashan near or just after the end of the high season and the Uzbek cities in the second half of September or early October. Spring runs the other way (see below).

Can you do it yourself, and what do we arrange?

Yes, you can do the whole route independently; this page is the plan. Three parts are hard to arrange from abroad: the Saty-to-Karakol transfer over Karkara, the vehicle or horses for Altyn-Arashan, and the Uzbek fast-train seats, which sell out.

No public transport runs from Saty to the border. Caravanistan, which collects traveller reports on Central Asian border crossings, says drivers wait in Kegen and that on the Kyrgyz side you hitchhike or book a ride with a local operator (Caravanistan). For travel within Uzbekistan, only 6 of the next 19 Manguberdi departures from Tashkent still had seats on 24 September 2026, as our Tashkent to Khiva guide records.

We arrange the Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan parts: the Karakol, Altyn-Arashan and Issyk-Kul days with their transfers, the flight day, the Uzbek trains and the hotels. For Kazakhstan we advise but do not book. Send us your dates and nationalities; we confirm the plan and price before booking anything.

Days 1–4: Almaty, Charyn Canyon and the Kolsai lakes

Give Almaty two nights and Saty two. Day 2 is the city: the Green Bazaar, Panfilov Park and the National Central Museum, which charges foreign visitors 5,000 ₸ (about $11) for all halls (museum price list). On day 3 drive east to Charyn Canyon, walk down the Valley of Castles to the river, then continue to Saty, the village below the lakes. Day 4 is Kaindy in the morning by local 4x4 and the lower Kolsai lake after lunch. The Kolsai Kolderi park puts Saty 250 km from Almaty (park route page) and charges 0.2 MRP per person per day, 865 ₸ at the 2026 MRP (park tariffs); Charyn is a separate park with the same visitor fee.

Day 5: how do you cross from Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan at Karkara?

By private car from Saty, crossing the Kegen–Karkara post in daylight. On 22 September 2026, the deputy head of Kyrgyzstan's border service told a parliamentary committee that the post works from 09:00 to 20:00. He said the two governments had agreed on a 24-hour regime, but Kazakhstan shortened the hours on its own, first to 09:00–18:00. The report does not state the time zone; Bishkek is one hour ahead of Kazakhstan (K-News, 22 September 2026).

The history explains the conflicting reports online. Kyrgyzstan announced a 24-hour regime from 25 August 2025 (Kaktus, 25 August 2025), and Kazakhstan's parliament ratified a protocol for round-the-clock work in January 2026 (Tengrinews, 21 January 2026). In summer 2026 the post opened 08:00–21:00 Bishkek time from 21 July to 31 August (KazTAG, 22 July 2026). Caravanistan still says 24/7; we follow the border service and plan a late-morning crossing.

The road is rough gravel for the last 15 km on the Kazakh side and about the first 50 km in Kyrgyzstan, and there is no money exchange at Karkara or in Kegen, according to Caravanistan. Carry some som or US dollars and pay the driver in the currency you agreed. Without your own car, the daily No. 424 bus from Almaty's Sayran station runs to Karakol via Kegen, but it leaves Almaty at 10:00 and does not serve Saty.

Days 6–11: Karakol, Altyn-Arashan, Issyk-Kul and Bishkek

Spend two nights in Karakol before Altyn-Arashan and one after. Day 6 is the city day in our Karakol guide: the Dungan mosque, the wooden Holy Trinity Church and the reopened history museum. On day 7 go up to Altyn-Arashan through Ak-Suu on foot, on horseback or in a 4x4, and on day 8 come down and sleep in Karakol again, so the long drive falls on a separate day.

On day 9 drive along the shore to the north side of Issyk-Kul, around Cholpon-Ata or Tamchy: about 140 km and two and a half hours from Karakol by our routing. Day 10 is a lake day without packing. On day 11 continue to Bishkek, about 260 km and four to five hours; lake buses and minibuses use the main bus station at Alma-Atinskaya 1/1 (Bishkek city hall).

This is the 8-day Kyrgyzstan itinerary entered from the east instead of from Bishkek, with one Bishkek night less. If you would rather trek than rest at the lake, swap the Altyn-Arashan night and the two lake nights for the three- to four-day Ala-Kul trek, which ends at Altyn-Arashan, and drive the 400 km from Karakol to Bishkek in one day. Day 12: how do you get from Bishkek to Tashkent?

Fly. Four airlines fly Bishkek to Tashkent nonstop in 1 h 10 min to 1 h 25 min. Tashkent is one hour behind Bishkek, so a 13:35 departure lands at 13:55 local time. Fewer flights are listed in the winter schedules from late October, so choose your flight before booking the rest of your stay in Uzbekistan.

Days 12–21: Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva

Spend nine nights in Uzbekistan: two in Tashkent, two in Samarkand, three in Bukhara and two in Khiva. Three nights in Bukhara leave two full days to explore before travelling on day 19. Day 13 is Tashkent; on day 14 take the Afrosiyob from Tashkent Central to Samarkand, about 2 h 20–30 min, economy 311,000 som (about $26) since 1 February 2026 (Gazeta.uz); our Tashkent–Samarkand guide covers stations and trains.

On day 16 continue to Bukhara; take the Afrosiyob, or the westbound Manguberdi, which calls at Samarkand at 09:23 and Bukhara's station in Kogon at 10:54 every day except Sunday, if tickets for that section are available on your date. On day 19 the same train leaves Bukhara at 11:14 and reaches Khiva at 14:42, from 332,000 som in economy; on Sundays take train 706 at 15:45, arriving 20:25 (Bukhara to Khiva).

Day 21 is departure. The eastbound Manguberdi leaves Khiva at 07:10 and reaches Tashkent at 15:06 every day except Monday, from 780,000 som (about $66) in economy, which may allow an evening flight home; leave enough time to reach the airport and check in. Do you need visas for all three countries?

Citizens of most Western countries need no visa for any of the three, but each country counts your days separately and India and China are exceptions. The table gives the ordinary-passport rules in force on 24 September 2026; our Uzbekistan visa guide, Kazakhstan entry guide and Kyrgyzstan entry guide have the details.

Kazakhstan allows its listed visa-free visitors 30 days per entry and 90 in any 180 (Kazakh MFA, Kazakh embassy in London). QazETA, its new electronic travel authorisation, is still a free, voluntary pilot: on 7 September 2026 the Interior Ministry said not having one is no reason to refuse entry (BES.media). Kyrgyzstan allows 30 days in any 60 to the 55 countries on its list (24.kg), and Uzbekistan 30 days from each border crossing (Uzbek MFA).

Registration is done for you in hotels. In Kazakhstan the hotel or host notifies the authorities within 3 working days (UK FCDO); in Uzbekistan hotels register you within three working days of entry (Law O'RQ-1074); in Kyrgyzstan the 55 listed nationalities need no registration during their first 30 days (resolution No. 600).

What changes in spring: the Tashkent–Almaty train

In spring, visit Uzbekistan in late May, then Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in June. You still cross Karkara from Kazakhstan into Kyrgyzstan, and you fly home from Bishkek.

The link between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan is Kazakhstan Railways' Talgo No. 1, daily from Tashkent Central at 14:41 to Almaty-2 at 08:51 the next morning, 18 h 10 min, with no time difference. For 15 October 2026 KTZ sold seats from 10,225 ₸ (about $23) and coupe berths from 21,247 ₸ (KTZ search). Tickets open 45 days ahead at 07:00 Astana time, the same clock as Tashkent (KTZ site rules). The return train leaves Almaty at 19:05 (KTZ search). A women-only carriage runs from 1 October 2026 (Spot.uz).

What should you book first, and what do the fares add up to?

Book in this order: the long-haul flights (into Almaty and out of Tashkent or Urgench in autumn; into Tashkent and out of Bishkek in spring), then the Bishkek–Tashkent flight for the autumn route, then the Uzbek trains when sales open 60 days ahead, then the Saty guesthouse, the Karkara transfer and the Altyn-Arashan night. In spring, book the Talgo when its 45-day window opens.

What can go wrong on this route?

The main concerns are changing hours at Karkara, sold-out train seats and unpredictable weather at the start and end of the mountain season. More for this trip: Central Asia trip planner, Kazakhstan guides and Central Asia in 2 weeks.

• Karkara hours keep changing. 24 hours from August 2025 by Kyrgyz announcement, 08:00–21:00 in summer 2026, 09:00–20:00 in late September. Cross by early afternoon and check the hours the week you travel.
• E-visa holders cannot use Karkara. If you need a Kyrgyz e-visa, the crossing must be Korday, which changes the order of the Kyrgyz days.
• No cash exchange at the border. Neither Karkara nor Kegen has one, according to Caravanistan.
• Long road days. Day 3, day 5 and day 11 each have four to six hours in a vehicle, and the Karkara road is partly gravel.
• Sold-out fast trains. If the Manguberdi is full on day 19 or 21, the 706 train, night trains or a flight from Urgench are the fallbacks; each costs time.
• Autumn cold in the mountains. Late-September starts put Altyn-Arashan outside the high season; have a Karakol-based day ready if the valley is not practical.
• What we could not verify: the time zone for the 09:00–20:00 Karkara opening hours, how long the formalities take, and whether bus 424 runs in the Karakol → Almaty direction.
