Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy from Almaty in 2 days (2026)

What do you see on this trip, and who should skip it?

You see three different places on one road east of Almaty: Charyn, a red-rock canyon with a 3 km trail down to the river; Kolsai, a chain of three mountain lakes above the village of Saty; and Kaindy, a lake where the trunks of drowned spruce trees stand out of the water. Skip it if long days in a vehicle wear you out: even over two days, the loop is about 12 hours of driving.

The two lake areas belong to the Kolsai Kolderi national park, and Charyn has its own park. The Kolsai park describes all four of its main lakes, Kaindy and the lower, middle and upper Kolsai, as dammed by landslides after earthquakes; its Kaindy page dates that lake to the earthquake of 1911. The lakes are busy: the park's deputy director told Kursiv that Kolsai had 600,026 visitors in 2025, 128,160 of them from abroad.

The border with Kyrgyzstan runs through the mountains south of Saty: the park's Saty-gorge route stops short of Saty pass because the pass is the state border. The trails are not a way across, so reach Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul by road through an official crossing.

Can you see Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy in one day?

Yes, on a group tour, but it is a 15-hour day that leaves Almaty at 05:30 and gives each place a short stop. We recommend two days with a night in Saty.

A one-day group tour listed on the Sputnik8 booking site on 24 September 2026 ran for 15 hours from 05:30, with Charyn, the Black Canyon viewpoint, Kaindy and the lower Kolsai lake. Our OpenStreetMap routing gives about 610 km and close to 12 hours of driving without stops for Almaty–Charyn–Saty–Kolsai–Almaty, before the spur to Kaindy, which leaves roughly three hours for three places. The Almaty minibus operator AlaGo (page updated 28 August 2026) says the loop does not work in one day for the same reason.

One day makes sense only if it is all you have. With a single spare day, Charyn on its own is an easier trip; Kolsai and Kaindy are what need the night in Saty.

What do the national parks charge in 2026?

Each park charges 0.2 MRP per person per day, which is 865 tenge (about $2) in 2026, plus 0.7 MRP, 3,027.5 tenge (about $7), for a car. MRP is Kazakhstan's monthly calculation index, set at 4,325 tenge from 1 January 2026 by the republican budget law.

The rates come from Order No. 232 of the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of 2 October 2024, appendix 14 for Charyn and appendix 16 for Kolsai Kolderi, which we read on the Adilet legal database on 24 September 2026. The Kolsai park publishes the same list on its own site. In January 2026 Tengrinews gave the car fee as 0.6 MRP; the order says 0.7 MRP for both parks, and we follow the order.

One car ticket lasts 24 hours and covers every gorge of the same park, so Kaindy and Kolsai are paid once; Charyn is a different park and is paid separately. Kursiv reported this clarification from the Forestry and Wildlife Committee on 12 August 2026, adding that many parks take advance payment in the Kaspi.kz app. We have not tested a foreign card at a park gate, so carry tenge in cash.

Two numbers do not match the order. In June the Kolsai deputy director told Kursiv that a car costs 3,600 tenge, more than the tariff's 3,027.5 tenge, and on 24 September the park's online shop still priced a tent place at 738 tenge, the 2024 value of 0.2 MRP. Carry extra cash in case the amount charged differs. Not paying is an offence under Article 381 of the Administrative Code, with a fine from 5 MRP (21,625 tenge), Tengrinews reported.

Children under 18 enter national parks free: Tourism and Sports Minister Yerbol Myrzabossynov announced it at a government meeting on 9 June 2026. Kazinform worded it as free entry for Kazakhstan's minors, and none of the reports says whether foreign children qualify. Ask at the gate.

How does the two-day trip work, hour by hour?

Day 1 is Charyn and the drive to Saty; day 2 is Kaindy in the morning, the lower Kolsai lake after lunch and the drive back to Almaty. The times below are our planning estimates, built from the routing figures and the parks' own trail times, not a tour timetable.

   Day 1, 07:00: leave Almaty

   About 3 hours and 210 km east to the Charyn visitor centre. Fill the tank before you leave the main road.

   Day 1, 10:00–12:30: the Valley of Castles

   The park's route passport gives 3 km from the checkpoint to the Charyn river, 45 minutes of walking and an hour at the river, 1 h 45 min in all. Allow extra for the climb back. The park's transport down costs 865 tenge per seat each way.

   Day 1, 13:00–16:00: drive to Saty

   Two and a half to three hours on a mountain road, with lunch on the way. Arrive in daylight.

   Day 2, 08:00–12:00: Kaindy

   About 8.5 km from Saty to the park checkpoint by local 4x4, then a walk of about 2–2.5 km to the lake. Give yourself an hour at the water.

   About 12–14 km from Saty. The lower lake is by the car park: walk the shore or take a boat.

How far can you hike at Kolsai?

The lower lake is next to the car park. The middle lake is about 7 km further up a forest trail, and the upper lake another 4 km, both one way. These are the figures in the park's route passport No. 3, approved in 2019.

The passport's walking times add up to about 3.5 hours from the lower to the middle lake, plus stops; the travel blog zabugorshiki gives 3–4 hours up. By our reckoning a return walk to the middle lake is about 14 km and a full day. The passport classes the route for walkers and riders, so horses are an option. Swimming in the lakes is banned under the park rules, and tents go only in marked places.

The park's route passports also say that trails can be closed for a time in spring, in rain, during the tick-borne encephalitis season and when the fire risk is high. Check with the park before a long walk.

How do you get to Kaindy lake?

From Saty a track runs about 8.5 km up the Kaindy gorge to the park checkpoint, where you pay, and you walk the last 2–2.5 km to the lake. Until now the track has been driven by local 4x4s, mostly Soviet-built UAZ jeeps. A new asphalt road is being built, but we could not confirm that it is open.

The park describes the route: from Saty along the road towards Zhalanash to the cemetery, then right onto a dirt road up the left bank of the Kaindy river, crossing the river twice. The road is 3–4 m wide with stones on the surface. The lake lies at 1,867 m, about 2.5 km past the checkpoint by way of a birch grove.

The Almaty region administration is building a 10 km road to the lake for 2.43 billion tenge. On 21 July 2026 it told Kazinform that 2.5 km had been asphalted and that the road would come into use in August. On 1 June the park's deputy director, Hamit Akhmetov, described the plan to Kazinform: a car park for 60–100 vehicles about 1.5 km from the lake, the rest on foot or on horseback, and a paid shuttle for people with disabilities. We found no report of the opening by 24 September, and a weekend tour sold for 25–27 September still listed a UAZ or bus transfer to the lower Kaindy car park and a 2.5 km walk each way.

Our advice: plan on a local 4x4 from Saty and ask your guesthouse to arrange it the evening before; jeep prices are agreed locally and we found none published. A one-day tour listing gave 5,000–8,000 tenge (about $11–18) per person for a horse at Kaindy. If the new road is open when you go, an ordinary car may reach the new car park; confirm on the park hotline, 8 800 100 33 39.

Should you take a tour, hire a driver or drive yourself?

A group tour is the cheapest and simplest; a private tour gives you a flexible two-day schedule with the arrangements handled for you; self-driving suits people used to mountain roads and dirt tracks. The prices below are what operators published on 24 September 2026, not our prices.

• Self-driving: the UK Foreign Office (updated 30 March 2026) warns that driving standards can be erratic, many roads are poorly maintained and service stations are limited outside the main cities; take fuel and water. It also says UK licence holders need an international driving permit.
• AlaGo says the road is asphalt as far as Saty; the climb to the lower Kolsai lake is a dirt road that turns slippery after rain, and the old Kaindy track, with two fords, is not for ordinary cars.
• Public transport is not practical. The blog zabugorshiki reports buses from Almaty's Sayakhat station towards Kegen and Narynkol that leave you about 10 km from Charyn, and no direct service to the lakes.

Where do you sleep: is Saty the place?

Yes. Saty is the last village before the lakes, about 12 km below Kolsai and 8.5 km below the Kaindy checkpoint, and its guesthouses usually serve dinner and breakfast. The Kolsai park's administration is in the village too.

Prices vary with the house and the season. zabugorshiki (updated 2026) gives 18,000–35,000 tenge (about $40–79) per person per night, usually with dinner and breakfast; the local operator Kolsaitrip lists guesthouses from 9,000 tenge; the park's own site lists beds at 5,000 tenge (hostel) and 10,000 tenge (room) per person, and yurt stays. AlaGo advises booking a week or two ahead for summer and weekends. We name no houses because we have not checked them.

Saty is inside the border zone, so everyone needs an identity document; under Resolution No. 356 the village needs no pass. Bring cash for the guesthouse, park fees and the Kaindy jeep: AlaGo says card terminals are not always available and cash machines are almost absent on the way, and mobile coverage is patchy in the gorges.

When should you go?

Late May to early October for the lakes; April–May and September–October for Charyn, which is hot in summer. Both parks are open all year, but winter changes the trip.

In summer Charyn's canyon floor reaches +40 °C and more, zabugorshiki reports, and AlaGo notes there is almost no shade by midday, so walk it in the morning. The Charyn park's route passport lists the Valley of Castles trail as open all year. At the lakes, AlaGo says evenings and mornings can drop to +10 °C or less even in July; bring a warm layer.

The Kolsai park says its season runs all year, and its September 2026 schedule shows it open daily. In winter the lakes freeze: the Chocolife tour catalogue describes skating on Kaindy and hard frost from December to February, AlaGo says snow often blocks the Kaindy road, and the UK Foreign Office warns that heavy snowfall can block roads and trekking routes in autumn and winter. What can go wrong?

Mostly the long drives, the heat in the canyon, the crowds at Kolsai and the uncertain Kaindy road. Here is what to plan for. See all our Kazakhstan guides, entry rules and QazETA and safety advice.

• Time in the vehicle. About 12 hours of driving over the two days by our routing, more on the one-day tour.
• Heat and edges at Charyn. The park's route passport warns walkers to keep away from cliff edges, watch for falling rocks, and look out for snakes and scorpions.
• Crowds at Kolsai. 600,026 visitors in 2025. The park is preparing a daily entry limit with advance online payment, but in June it had no start date or number.
• The Kaindy road. Opening of the new road was not confirmed by 24 September 2026, and jeep prices are not published.
• Fees that differ from the tariff. The deputy director's 3,600 tenge per car and the tours' lump sums do not match the order.
• Closed trails. The parks may close routes in spring, rain, tick season or fire danger.
• Drones and photos. The UK Foreign Office says flying a drone needs a licence from the Civil Aviation Committee, and photography is restricted near border areas.
• What we could not verify: how the third-lake checkpoint works in practice, whether foreign children enter free, the Kaindy road opening and the Charyn park's opening hours.
