How do you get from Astana airport to the city?

Take the Tarlan Astana light rail (LRT). It runs from Äuejai (Airport) station to Nurly Zhol railway station in about 40 minutes for 200 ₸ a ride. Late in the evening, take a taxi instead.

The line opened to passengers on 17 May 2026. Kazinform gives 22.4 km and 18 stations, passing the EXPO district, the Botanical Garden and the administrative centre. The operator, City Transportation Systems (CTS), told Kazinform that the full trip takes about 40 minutes, with a train every 5–10 minutes. Announcements are in Kazakh, Russian and English.

The last trains need planning. CTS told Kazinform on 14 September 2026 that passenger service runs from 06:00 to 23:00, and that the final trains set down their passengers at Äuejai and Nurly Zhol at 23:00. The last departure from each station is therefore earlier, and it differs by station and direction; CTS asks passengers to check it at the station. By our count, a train that reaches Nurly Zhol at 23:00 leaves the airport at about 22:20. If you land after about 21:30, we would plan on a taxi.

You pay at the turnstile: with an LRT card, a bank card, Apple Pay or Samsung Pay, a QR code from a Kazakh bank’s app, or a single paper ticket with a QR code, according to Kazinform. Station desks and ticket machines take cash, cards and QR payments. A standard LRT card costs 1,000 ₸.

Two city buses also serve the airport. The airport’s bus page lists No. 10 leaving the airport from 06:40 to 22:24, every 5–7 minutes, for the railway station (“Vokzal”), and No. 12 from 07:50 to 22:30, every 15 minutes, via the House of Ministries and Baiterek. The city’s fare operator, Transcard, charges 110 ₸ a ride by card and 220 ₸ in cash.

For a taxi, the airport’s taxi page names Region Taxi as the single taxi service on the forecourt of terminals T1 and T2 (call centre +7 701 555 55 55). The city tourism site Visit Astana says an app ride with Yandex Go, Bolt or inDriver takes 20–25 minutes to the centre and starts from 2,000 ₸.

Is Astana worth a stop, or should you choose Almaty?

Astana is worth one or two days if you like new architecture and museums. It has no mountains nearby and its winters are hard, so for nature Almaty is the better base. That is our editorial view.

Astana has been Kazakhstan’s capital since 1997; the operator of the Baiterek monument calls it the year Astana was proclaimed the new capital. The city was called Nur-Sultan until a presidential decree of 17 September 2022 restored the name Astana. The old name survives in places: Kazakhstan Railways’ booking site still labels Nurly Zhol station “Nur-Sultan–Nurly Zhol”.

What you come for is mostly recent: the Baiterek tower (2002), the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, the National Museum, the EXPO-2017 sphere and the Nursultan Mosque (2022). The buildings are far apart, so you will use the LRT and taxis more than in Almaty.

If you have room for only one Kazakh city on a trip from Uzbekistan, we would pick Almaty: a daily train runs there from Tashkent, and the mountains start at the city’s edge (see our Almaty guide). Astana makes sense as a short add-on by air, or if business brings you there. Almaty and Astana are 1 h 40–1 h 50 apart by plane.

What to see in Astana: tickets and hours

Plan around four paid sights: Baiterek, the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, the National Museum and the Museum of Singularity inside the Nur Alem sphere. The first two are run by the city’s venue operator, Astana Venue Management, which publishes prices and seasonal hours for both.

• Baiterek. The operator’s page gives a 105 m structure with a 22 m sphere, completed on 29 August 2002 to a design by Akmurza Rustambekov. At 97 m, for 1997, is an imprint of the first president’s right palm. Children aged 6–15 pay 1,250 ₸, pensioners 2,000 ₸; tickets are not refundable.
• Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. A pyramid by the British architect Norman Foster, according to its operator. Inside are an opera hall, the Atrium with the Museum of Peace and Accord, exhibition space and, at the top, the Besik hall, with a panoramic view of the city through a stained-glass window by Brian Clarke. Children aged 6–15 pay 1,000 ₸.
• National Museum. The hours are on the museum’s contacts page. We do not quote a ticket price for foreign visitors because the museum’s own price list does not show one. Buy at the desk, which closes an hour before the museum.
• Nur Alem sphere. QazExpoCongress, which runs the EXPO-2017 buildings, says the Museum of Future Energy in the sphere stopped admitting visitors in December 2024; the building now houses alem.ai, an artificial-intelligence centre. Its site lists the Museum of Singularity on the first floor: 2,500 ₸, or 10,000 ₸ for a guided group of up to 30 plus entry tickets.
• Nursultan Mosque. Visit Astana calls it the largest mosque in Kazakhstan, built in 2022, with 130 m minarets, a 62 m dome, room for 30,000 worshippers inside and more than 120,000 on the grounds. It says the mosque is open to everyone. Dress modestly.

How is Astana laid out, and where should you stay?

Think of the visitor’s Astana as the LRT line. It runs from the airport through the EXPO district and the administrative centre to Nurly Zhol station, with stations named Bäiterek, Ministrlikter üii (House of Ministries) and Ulttyq muzei (National Museum) on the way, according to the station list published on 15 May 2026.

The National Museum and the Palace of Peace are both on Tauelsizdik Avenue, at Nos. 54 and 57, so they pair well in one half-day. Baiterek is at Nurzhol Boulevard 14, a short walk from the House of Ministries.

The older part of the city and Astana-1, the old railway station, are not on the LRT yet. Tengrinews reports a plan to extend the line to the right bank, along Kenesary and Zhenis streets to the old station.

Where to stay is our planning advice, not a hotel recommendation:

• Near an LRT station between Bäiterek and Ulttyq muzei. Walking distance to the main monuments and one ride to the airport.
• Near Nurly Zhol station. Worth it for an early train or a late arrival by rail, and it is the LRT’s terminus.
• On the right bank near Astana-1. Only if your train uses Astana-1; until the LRT extension opens, you need a bus or a taxi to reach the monuments.

How do you get around: LRT, buses and taxis?

Use the LRT along its line, city buses beyond it and a taxi app late in the evening. The LRT and the buses have separate fares and passes.

From 1 August 2026, CTS sells LRT day passes and ride bundles alongside the 200 ₸ single ride, Zakon.kz reported. They start at the first tap and last to the end of that day or until the rides run out. For now they work on the LRT only.

Visit Astana counts more than 100 bus routes and says you can pay with an Astra Plat transport card or a contactless bank card. Transcard, the city’s fare system, charges 110 ₸ a ride by card and 220 ₸ in cash, and sells a one-day bus pass for 500 ₸ that starts at the first tap.

Visit Astana lists Yandex Go, Bolt, inDriver and Maxim as the main taxi apps, and says a ride across the centre usually takes 10–15 minutes.

How do you get to Astana (and out)?

Fly. From Tashkent it takes about two hours, from Almaty 1 h 40–1 h 50. The train from Almaty takes almost 17 hours.

On Yandex Schedules, an aggregator, the Tashkent–Astana route is flown by Air Astana, Uzbekistan Airways, Centrum Air and FlyArystan. Overland from Uzbekistan you would go through Almaty; our Tashkent to Almaty guide covers the daily train and the border, and Central Asia by train the rest of the rail network.

Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) runs two daily Talgo trains from Almaty-2. In its booking search for 15 October 2026, No. 003 left at 16:04 and arrived at 08:45 the next morning (16 h 41 min); No. 009 left at 16:57 and arrived at 09:36 (16 h 39 min). Seats on No. 009 started at 8,368 ₸ (about $19) and compartment berths at 21,554 ₸.

Check the station printed on your ticket. The booking search showed both trains arriving at Nurly Zhol, but KTZ’s timetable for May 2026 lists Talgo 10/9 as running from Astana-1. KTZ’s information line is 1433.

How cold does Astana get, and when should you go?

Winter is severe: in January the average daytime high is about −10 °C and the night low about −17 °C. We would go between late May and mid-September, when days are warm enough for long walks between monuments. For the rest of Kazakhstan month by month, see when to visit Kazakhstan.

We found no climate normals page for Astana from Kazhydromet, Kazakhstan’s weather service, so the table is our own calculation from the Open-Meteo archive (ERA5 reanalysis) for the city’s grid cell, 2016–2025: model averages, not station records.

In that data, every winter from 2016 to 2025 had at least one night at −30 °C or colder, and the lowest reading was −37.6 °C. Canada’s travel advice warns of winter temperatures below −30 °C with wind chills that feel below −50 °C. It also reports severe air pollution in Astana and Almaty from November to March, when residents burn coal for heating and two coal-fired power plants run.

Summer is short and warm. July averages about 27 °C by day and 16 °C at night, and June and July are the wettest months. April and October are cool, with nights around freezing.

Money, SIM, entry, time and safety in brief

Kazakhstan’s currency is the tenge (₸). The National Bank of Kazakhstan rate on 24 September 2026 was 445.65 ₸ to the US dollar; the dollar figures here use it. Prices across the country are in our Kazakhstan trip cost guide. Visit Astana says Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay are accepted and ATMs are in every district. A local SIM must be registered within 30 days or it stops working; our Almaty guide explains the rule.

Astana keeps Tashkent’s clock. Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Trade and Integration moved the whole country to UTC+5 on 1 March 2024, when Astana turned its clocks back an hour. Older guides that put Astana an hour ahead of Tashkent are out of date.

The US State Department rates Kazakhstan Level 1, exercise normal precautions (17 August 2026). Canada reports pickpocketing and bag snatching particularly in Astana and Almaty, and incidents involving tourists outside bars and nightclubs at night. How many days do you need, and what about Burabay?

One full day covers the essentials; a second day lets you add the Museum of Singularity and the mosque at a slower pace. Do not put the museum day on a Monday: the National Museum and the alem.ai museum both close. Here is the one-day order we would use:

   Start when it opens and give it two to three hours. The nearest LRT station is Ulttyq muzei.

   13:00 · Palace of Peace and Reconciliation

   Across the same avenue (Tauelsizdik 57). In autumn, winter and spring it closes at 18:00, so go before Baiterek.

   15:30 · House of Ministries and Baiterek

   Take the LRT to Bäiterek. The tower is open to 21:00 from September to May, so you can go up at dusk.

   Evening · back by LRT or taxi

   Check the last departure from your station; after about 21:30 use a taxi app for the airport.

What can go wrong in Astana?

The main risks are the weather, late arrivals and out-of-date information. Here is what to check before you go.

• Winter cold, wind and air pollution from November to March (Canada’s travel advice). In our model data every winter from 2016 to 2025 reached −30 °C at least once.
• The LRT’s last departures are earlier than 23:00 and differ by station; the last No. 12 bus leaves the airport at 22:30.
• The LRT can stop. On 2 July 2026 a cable caught fire between Syğanaq and Bäiterek stations at 13:28 and trains were halted; CTS reported full service restored the same day, with no one hurt.
• The Museum of Future Energy in the Nur Alem sphere has been closed since December 2024, though many guides still list it.
• Mondays are poor museum days, and the National Museum also closes on the last Tuesday of each month.
• Two railway stations: check whether your ticket says Nurly Zhol or Astana-1. The LRT does not reach Astana-1 yet.
• Official tourist pages lag: Visit Astana still described the LRT as “planned” on 24 September 2026.
• We could not find official visiting hours for the Nursultan Mosque, or a ticket price for foreign visitors on the National Museum’s own site.
