Four cities in one week: Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva with one flight

The route: 7 calendar days, 6 nights, one flight

You arrive in Tashkent on day 1. On day 7, you fly back to Tashkent and connect to your international flight. The three train legs run west; the flight brings you back. Every city gets one full day except Tashkent, which gets an arrival afternoon, and Khiva, which gets an afternoon, an evening and a morning inside the walls.

This is a fast-paced introduction to Uzbekistan. If you can accept three cities, the 7-day Tashkent–Samarkand–Bukhara route includes a final night in Tashkent and needs no domestic flight. If you can add three days, the 10-day route gives the same four cities two or three nights each.

What you trade for the fourth city

There is no final night in Tashkent to allow for delays. On day 7, you need to take a taxi to Urgench airport, fly to Tashkent and check in for your international flight. Choose this route only if that flight leaves in the late evening or after midnight. Check the connection before you book anything else.

There are two ways to give yourself more options. Urgench has several flights a day to Tashkent, so there may be a later flight if your morning departure is cancelled. And Urgench has direct international flights of its own: Uzbekistan Airways and Turkish Airlines to Istanbul, and services to Moscow and other Russian cities, so some travellers can drop the Tashkent connection entirely. You also have less time to explore each city. One full day in Samarkand and one in Bukhara means choosing the main historic sites and leaving museums, workshops and out-of-town palaces for a return visit. Days 1–5: three cities by daytime train

Day 1 depends on your landing time. The Tashkent airport arrival guide covers the transfer and the first evening. Do not plan a timed visit; with a free afternoon, choose Chorsu market or the Hazrat Imam ensemble, both described in the Tashkent guide.

Day 2 needs an early train so that Registan gets a full afternoon. The Afrosiyob timetable in force since 14 December 2025 lists departures from Tashkent at 06:10, 07:30, 08:00 and 08:30, all reaching Samarkand in about 2 h 10–25 min. Spend day 3 exploring Samarkand: Shah-i-Zinda, Bibi-Khanym and Siyob bazaar, with Ulugh Beg's observatory or Afrasiab as the one optional addition. Day 4 repeats the pattern with a morning train to Bukhara; the Samarkand to Bukhara guide explains that Buxoro-1 station is in Kogon, outside the old town, so the arrival transfer is part of the day. On day 5, explore Bukhara, walking from the Samanid Mausoleum through the Ark to Poi Kalon.

Keep the same accommodation for both Samarkand nights and both Bukhara nights, close to the sights you will walk to. On a six-night trip, changing hotels within a city takes up valuable sightseeing time.

Day 6: the Manguberdi to Khiva, or the afternoon electric train

The route depends on reaching Khiva with daylight left. The Jaloliddin Manguberdi high-speed train, launched in May 2026 with its first run on 5 May, leaves Tashkent-Central at 07:00 and stops at Samarkand, Bukhara and Urgench before Khiva, a journey Uzbekistan Railways gives as about 7.5 hours; the seven-car Hyundai Rotem sets carry 389 passengers. Since 22 July 2026 a second trainset covers the remaining weekdays, so there is a departure from Tashkent every day except Sunday. Official releases confirm the Bukhara stop but do not publish stop times. Operator timetables show a Bukhara departure around 11:14 and a Khiva arrival at 14:31, about 3 h 15 min, and sell the segment; treat those times as unverified until you see the same journey on the railway's booking site. If the Manguberdi segment is unavailable for your date, the fallback is the daytime electric train 706, Buxoro-1 15:45 to Khiva 20:25, every day except Monday. It arrives after dark, which turns your Khiva time into one evening and one morning. In that case set aside the morning for sightseeing and choose a later Urgench flight. On arrival, go straight into Ichan-Kala. The Khiva guide lists the four main visits for a first day; with an afternoon and an evening you can walk the main street, climb one viewpoint and see the Kalta Minor and Kunya-Ark before dinner. The desert castles do not fit this route.

Day 7: Urgench airport, the flight to Tashkent and the departure

Khiva to Urgench airport is about 35 km. Centrum Air's Uzbek route guide gives 35–45 minutes by taxi on the paved road; a trolleybus line also links the two towns but takes about an hour and does not serve the terminal. Since September 2026 a once-daily electric train runs airport–Urgench–Khiva at 08:40 and back from Khiva at 21:00, which suits an evening flight but not a morning one. Tashkent–Urgench is one of the busiest domestic routes: the aggregator lists about 26 weekly departures, with Centrum Air daily and Uzbekistan Airways on weekdays, and a flight time of roughly 1 h 20–35 min. Choose a Tashkent arrival at least four hours before your international departure, and more if your bags must be re-checked because the tickets are separate. Aviasales: Tashkent–Urgench

If your airline flies from Urgench directly, the day simplifies: a morning in Khiva, one taxi, one check-in. Uzbekistan Airways opened Urgench–Istanbul in 2021 and other carriers serve Istanbul, Moscow, St Petersburg and several Russian cities on set weekdays. Booking order

Book in this order: international flights, then the Urgench–Tashkent flight for day 7, then the day 6 train to Khiva, then the two Afrosiyob legs, then hotels. Uzbekistan Railways' press service says rail sales open 60 days before travel, so the Manguberdi and Afrosiyob seats are the items to buy on the first possible day; the booking guide explains the purchase. Budget six nights, three train tickets and one domestic flight per person, plus the airport taxi in Urgench and the transfers at every station. Because there is no rest day, consider hiring a guide in Samarkand and Bukhara if you want to learn more about the places you visit. Reverse the route, add a night or fly home from Urgench

The direction can be reversed by flying to Urgench on the morning of day 2 and working east by train, finishing with an Afrosiyob from Samarkand into Tashkent on day 7.
