Two days or three: what each stay covers

Two full days cover the old town at a walking pace: the central route from Lyabi-Hauz to Poi-Kalyan on day 1, the Ark and the western monuments on day 2. A third day buys Sitorai Mohi-Khosa, the emir’s country palace, and one more visit. Count full days, not hotel nights: arrive in the evening, sightsee for two days and leave the next morning, and you need 3 nights; a third full day makes it 4.

Our 10-day and 14-day itineraries give Bukhara 3 nights, and the 7-day plan gives it 2. Two nights work when you arrive on a morning train: the 09:53 Afrosiyob from Samarkand reaches Bukhara-1 at 11:39 and leaves the afternoon for Lyabi-Hauz and the domes.

Match the plan to your trains. The 10:59 Afrosiyob from Samarkand and the 08:30 from Tashkent both reach Bukhara-1 at 12:36, which puts you in the old town around 13:00, ready to start day 1 after lunch. Leaving for Khiva on the 11:14 Manguberdi costs you the last morning, so see Poi-Kalyan the evening before; train 706 at 15:45 leaves most of that morning free.

Take the third day if the palace interests you, if you travel between June and August and need a long midday break, or if you want more than four museum interiors. With children or limited walking, make one paid museum the anchor of each morning and decide the afternoon after the break; between the Ark and Lyabi-Hauz, 1.45 km on foot, a taxi saves the walk in the heat.

Tickets, hours and time at each sight

Bukhara has no single old-town ticket. The Bukhara State Museum-Reserve, founded in 1922 and based in the Ark since 1945, sells a separate ticket for each of its museums. Its price list has been in force since 1 January 2025 and was still posted on 27 September 2026: foreign visitors pay 60,000 som at the Ark and at Sitorai Mohi-Khosa, 30,000 at the Fayzulla Khojaev house and 20,000 at each smaller museum. Adult citizens of Uzbekistan pay 10,000 or 5,000 som. The list dates the Ark from the 4th century BC to the early 20th century, and Sitorai Mohi-Khosa from the late 19th to the early 20th.

The museums share one set of hours: 09:00–18:00 every day with no day off, 08:00–21:00 in the season, and 09:00–17:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays. The list gives no dates for the season, so plan to be inside by 17:00. Visitors with disabilities enter free. Poi-Kalyan, the Samanid Mausoleum, Bolo-Hauz and Chor Minor are not on the museum-reserve list at all.

The list names 18 museums, including district museums outside the city such as Romitan’s. Two days with the Ark and four smaller museums cost a foreign adult 140,000 som in tickets; the palace adds 60,000 on day 3. The times in the table are our estimates for an unhurried visit.

The old town is 2 km across, in three groups

UNESCO inscribed the Historic Centre of Bukhara in 1993 as one site, not monument by monument. For walking, split it into three groups. The central route runs from Lyabi-Hauz through the three trading domes to Poi-Kalyan. The western group is the Ark, Bolo-Hauz, Chashma-Ayub and the Samanid Mausoleum. Chor Minor stands 820 m east of Lyabi-Hauz, and the palace and the Naqshband complex are 7 and 12 km away by road.

Think of the city in three rings. Inside is the old town, about 2 km across. The second ring holds the outlying sights: the palace, 7.4 km by road from Lyabi-Hauz, and the Naqshband complex, 12.1 km. The third holds the arrival points: the airport, 4.9 km from Lyabi-Hauz, and the Bukhara-1 railway station in Kagan, 13 km away.

On foot, Lyabi-Hauz to the Samanid Mausoleum is 2 km, or 27 minutes without stops, by our OpenStreetMap routing. Save each place as a map pin under both of its names: Chor Minor is also the madrasa of Khalif Niyazkul, and Poi-Kalyan appears as Po-i-Kalyan or Poi Kalon.

The whole loop, from Lyabi-Hauz under the domes to Poi-Kalyan, the Ark, Bolo-Hauz, Chashma-Ayub and the Samanid Mausoleum and back, is about 5.1 km and 69 minutes of walking before any museum visit. That is why this plan splits it over two days, with the long return leg taken after lunch.

Day 1: Lyabi-Hauz, the trading domes and Poi-Kalyan

Day 1 stays within 850 m of Lyabi-Hauz and costs 60,000–80,000 som in tickets for three or four museums. Start at the pool, which began as a trading point on the Silk Road; that is why a trading street grew up beside it. The Kukeldash madrasa is 16th-century and one of the largest in Bukhara, with 160 cells, a facade faced with majolica, and a reception hall, a mosque and classrooms inside. Across the water, the Nodir Divanbegi building began as a caravanserai and was later turned into a madrasa; beside it stand the Nodir Divanbegi khanaka and a bronze statue of Khoja Nasreddin from the late 20th century.

Then walk west under the domes: Toqi Sarrofon, the money changers’ dome, Toqi Telpakfurushon, the hat sellers’, and Toqi Zargaron, the jewellers’. Choose museums by subject instead of seeing them all: carpets at Magoki-Attori, calligraphy at the Ulugh Beg madrasa, woodcarving at the Abdulaziz Khan madrasa. Each is a separate 20,000 som ticket.

Keep Poi-Kalyan for the end of the afternoon, after the museums close. The Kalyan minaret dates from 1127; the Kalyan mosque and the Mir-i-Arab madrasa gave the square its present form in the 16th century, and the tourism portal counts a second madrasa, Amir Olimkhon, in the ensemble. Compare the bands of brickwork on the minaret with the large mosque and the madrasa across the square. Chor Minor, the ‘four minarets’, is the madrasa of Khalif Niyazkul, opened in 1807 and 820 m east of Lyabi-Hauz: a short walk before dinner.

In the evening the pool is the meeting point of the old town: the national tourism portal lists concerts and shows of national dress by the water, with a café beside it. For lunch, the portal’s Bukhara guide names halisa and qayish among the local dishes and describes the city’s own plov; eat near the group you are visiting instead of crossing town.

Arriving on a 12:36 train? Start at 16:00 with Toqi Zargaron and Poi-Kalyan, and move the Lyabi-Hauz museums to the next morning.

Day 2: the Ark and western Bukhara

Day 2 needs the Ark’s 60,000 som ticket and 20,000 for Chashma-Ayub; Bolo-Hauz and the Samanid Mausoleum are not on the museum-reserve list. From the Ark to the Samanid Mausoleum is about 1.5 km on foot.

Be at the Ark at 09:00, when it opens. The citadel was the emirs’ fortress and now holds the museum-reserve’s regional history museum, so give its halls 90 minutes to 2 hours. The Zindan, the emirate’s 18th-century prison, is now a museum of courts and law, on a separate 20,000 som ticket.

From Bolo-Hauz, walk 590 m to Chashma-Ayub, a mausoleum of the 12th–16th centuries that now tells the story of Bukhara’s water supply. The Samanid Mausoleum, 290 m further, is the oldest building in this plan: it went up around 892–907, and its fired bricks, laid in patterns, are the whole of its decoration. Walls up to 1.8 m thick kept it standing. Walk round all four sides: they are identical. A gallery with 40 window openings runs round the top of the walls, and the tourism portal notes that the brick patterns change with the light through the day. Ismail Samani built it over his father’s grave and was later buried there himself.

After lunch, walk the 2 km back towards Lyabi-Hauz or take a taxi, and spend the late afternoon on a museum you skipped on day 1.

Day 3: the emir’s palace and one more visit

The third day is for places outside the old town. Sitorai Mohi-Khosa, the country residence of Bukhara’s last emir, stands 4 km north of the city, which is 7.4 km and about 11 minutes by car from Lyabi-Hauz. Its new palace dates from the early 20th century, and the White Hall is decorated with carved ganch plaster and mirrors. The museum-reserve runs it as a museum of applied art, for 60,000 som. Go in the morning, when it opens at 09:00, and book the car for the return trip too.

Pair it with one more visit, not two. The Bahauddin Naqshband complex in Qasri Orifon, Kogon district, surrounds the grave of the Sufi teacher who gave the Naqshbandi order its name, and it is a place of pilgrimage: dress as for a mosque and ask before photographing people at prayer. A loop from Lyabi-Hauz to the palace, on to the complex and back is about 35 km and 42 minutes of driving, so book a car that waits.

To stay in town instead, visit the Fayzulla Khojaev house in the Gozion quarter. The merchant’s home belonged to Ubaydullo Khoja, father of Fayzulla Khojaev, and has decorated summer and winter rooms, with displays on household life and trade (30,000 som). Keep day 3 free of trains: a palace morning followed by the 15:45 train to Khiva makes a rushed day.

Getting in and around: Bukhara-1 is in Kagan, 13 km out

Every train stops at Bukhara-1 (Buxoro-1), in the town of Kagan (Kogon), 13 km from Lyabi-Hauz: about 16 minutes by car without traffic, by our OpenStreetMap routing. Book a transfer or take a taxi; Yandex Go has run in Bukhara since 6 April 2022 and takes cash. A 12:36 arrival puts you at an old-town hotel around 13:00.

From Tashkent Central, the Afrosiyob leaves at 07:30, 08:30 and 19:48, plus 06:10 on Sundays, and takes 4 h 00 min to 4 h 13 min for 509,000 som in economy. The Jaloliddin Manguberdi, on its way to Khiva, is faster: 07:00 → 10:54, every day except Sunday. Sharq trains, at 08:37 and 20:32, take about 6 hours for 276,820 som, and the night trains leave from Tashkent South, not Central, at 177,990 som for an open berth. They arrive early: the 21:45 reaches Bukhara-1 at 05:12 and the 22:34 at 06:28, and the 20:32 Sharq pulls in at 02:27, so book the room from the night before.

Morning trains sell out first. On 27 September the 07:30 and 08:30 Afrosiyob to Bukhara had no seats left for 14 October, while 11 November still had 23 and 48 economy seats. Leaving Bukhara, no Afrosiyob runs between 03:34 and 15:09. The day options for Samarkand and Tashkent are the Manguberdi at 10:57, not on Mondays, and the Afrosiyob at 15:09 and 16:22, plus 18:14 on Sundays. Where to stay: the old town or the new town

Stay in the old town if you can. Every sight in the two-day plan lies within 2 km of Lyabi-Hauz, so you walk out of the door in the morning and back for a rest at midday. The new town, outside the historic centre, suits travellers who need a lift, parking at the door or a larger hotel; count a taxi or Yandex Go ride at each end of the day.

Old-town lanes are narrow, and a car cannot always reach the door. Before you book, ask the hotel for its exact map pin, the nearest point where a car can stop with luggage, and whether your room is up a flight of stairs. Arriving on a night train, or on the 22:23 Afrosiyob from Samarkand that gets in at 00:01, book the room from the previous night or agree a late check-in in writing. Watch out

• The station is 13 km out. Bukhara-1 is in Kagan, so count 16 minutes by car, plus the walk from the drop-off, before your first sight.
• Early closing and separate tickets. The museums close at 17:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, not 18:00, and each museum is a separate ticket.
• Gaps in the timetable. No Manguberdi runs to Khiva on Sundays and no train 706 on Mondays, and no Afrosiyob leaves Bukhara between 03:34 and 15:09.
• Summer heat. The Bukhara weather station set a record of 46.9 °C in July 2026. From June to August, walk before 12:00 and after 16:00; see when to go.
