Central Asia by train: what runs in 2026 (Silk Road)

Which trains cross the borders in 2026?

Three passenger links leave Uzbekistan: daily to Almaty, weekly to Dushanbe and three times a week from Nukus to Beyneu. Add the night trains to Moscow and Kazan, which also carry passengers to Turkestan, and that is every cross-border train a visitor can use. Turkmenistan and China have none; Kyrgyzstan takes two trains and a change.

The table comes from the two railways' booking searches and the list of international trains published by Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ), titled as the schedule for May 2026, all read on 24 September 2026. KTZ's list of trains run by foreign railways names three Uzbek lines to Russia (Tashkent–Moscow, Tashkent–Kazan and Tashkent–Volgograd), three from Nukus and Urgench to western Kazakhstan, Bishkek–Moscow and Bishkek–Shu from Kyrgyzstan, and weekly Tajik trains from Dushanbe, Khujand and Kulob to Volgograd. None goes to Turkmenistan or China.

Times are local. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan keep the same clock (UTC+5); Bishkek is an hour ahead. A departure just after midnight is printed on the ticket with the next day's date.

Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan: which train?

For Almaty, the daily Talgo. For western Kazakhstan and the Caspian, the Nukus–Beyneu train. For Turkestan, a Russia-bound night train. Each has its own details; here is the short version.

Talgo No. 1/2 is run by KTZ's passenger company and has run daily since 14 December 2025. It leaves Tashkent Central at 14:41 and reaches Almaty-2 at 08:51 the next morning, 18 h 10 min, calling at Shymkent, Taraz and Shu. On 24 September, KTZ sold October and early-November seats from 9,218 ₸ (about $21) and coupe berths from 18,892 ₸ (about $42). Fares, stops, flights and the road border are on Tashkent to Almaty.

Uzbek Railways' trains 305 (to Moscow) and 315 (to Kazan) leave Tashkent Central at 00:32 and reach Turkestan at 09:05, three times a week; the return trains leave Turkestan at 19:47 and reach Tashkent at 04:55. Both booking sites date the ticket Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, so a Wednesday ticket means boarding late on Tuesday evening. The Uzbek timetable page still shows the Moscow train at 23:55 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We follow the booking searches, which both show 00:32; the Uzbek Railways line 1005 can confirm. The Turkestan day is in Turkestan and Shymkent from Tashkent, and our Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in 10 days route uses these trains.

In the west, train 649 leaves Nukus at 19:43 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, reaches Beyneu at 07:43 and runs on to Mangistau, the station for Aktau. It is the only way across there: the Daut-ota/Tazhen road crossing has been closed to people since 1 February 2025. It sells out: on 24 September the next free berth from Nukus to Beyneu was on 3 November. Details are on Nukus to Beyneu.

Is there a train from Uzbekistan to Tajikistan?

Yes, one a week. Train 302 leaves Tashkent on Tuesday at 14:48 and Samarkand at 19:48, and reaches Dushanbe at 09:47 on Wednesday. Train 301 comes back on Monday: Dushanbe 19:26, Samarkand 08:42 on Tuesday. These are the times in the Uzbek Railways booking system for the trains of 28–30 September 2026.

It does not go via Penjikent, and it does not call at Termez. It runs south through Karshi, Kumkurgan and Denau and crosses into Tajikistan between Sariosiyo and Kudukli. From Samarkand, an open berth cost 310,400 som (about $26) and a compartment berth 369,640 som (about $31).

You cannot buy it online. The booking system shows the train with the note that tickets are sold only at ticket offices, so buy it at a station in Uzbekistan with your passport. UK, Indian and Israeli passport holders, and Chinese under 55, need a Tajik visa before boarding: see Tajikistan visa rules. The road via Penjikent runs every day and is on Samarkand to Dushanbe.

Can you reach Bishkek by train from Uzbekistan?

Not directly. No train runs from Tashkent to Bishkek, and KTZ's booking search found none on any date from 12 to 22 October 2026. A rail-only trip works twice a week with a change in Shymkent, but it takes about 21 hours. We would fly or take the bus; both are on Tashkent to Bishkek.

The connection: take the Tuesday or Friday Talgo from Tashkent (14:41) to Shymkent (21:05), then the Moscow–Bishkek train 318, which leaves Shymkent at 00:13 on Wednesdays and Saturdays and reaches Bishkek-2 at 13:04. KTZ's journey planner does not offer this pair; we found it by searching each leg on 24 September. A berth in an open-plan sleeping carriage on 318 from Shymkent cost 18,071 ₸ (about $41) and a berth in a four-person compartment 22,121 ₸ (about $50), plus 5,080 ₸ (about $11) for a Talgo seat to Shymkent. By our arithmetic the whole trip takes 21 h 23 min.

The other train to Bishkek does not connect with the Talgo. Train 310 leaves Shu, on the Kazakh side, at 01:02 on Mondays and reaches Bishkek-2 at 09:16. The Tashkent–Almaty Talgo calls at Shu at 04:17, three hours after it has gone.

Coming back is harder. Train 317 leaves Bishkek-2 at 21:05 on Wednesdays and Saturdays and reaches Shymkent at 08:02, after the morning Talgo to Tashkent has left at 06:25, so you spend a night in Shymkent. Either way you enter Kazakhstan and leave it again, so Kazakh entry rules apply: Kazakhstan entry. Every border crossing is in Central Asia border crossings and visas.

Is there a train to Issyk-Kul?

Only in summer, and only to Balykchy at the western end of the lake. In 2026 the Bishkek–Balykchy train ran from 5 June to 13 September: Fridays to Sundays until 21 June, then daily from 26 June. The season is over. The 2026 timetable was published on 19 May, so look for the 2027 dates in spring.

The train left Bishkek-2 at 08:06 and reached Balykchy at 12:12 and the Balykchy beach stop at 12:37. It came back from the beach at 18:40 and reached Bishkek-2 at 23:11. A standard seat cost 180 som in cash or 150 som by card, and tickets were sold on ticket.railway.kg, in the railway's app and at Bishkek-2 station, according to Economist.kg (19 May 2026).

Which Kazakh trains will you actually use?

Mostly Talgos from Almaty-2. KTZ's train list shows Talgos from Almaty to Astana, Shymkent (two pairs a day, 11/12 and 25/26) and Oral, among others. Two things are worth knowing before you book: the trains are slow, and Almaty has one working station for now.

Almaty to Astana is a night train, not a fast link. In KTZ's search for departures on 15–18 October 2026, every Talgo took 16 h 04 min to 17 h 24 min, while flights are scheduled at about 1 h 40 min to 2 h. We would fly, unless you want the train to save a hotel night.

From Turkestan to Almaty, KTZ listed seven trains for 16 October, all overnight. The Talgo, 028 from Oral, runs every other day: Turkestan 20:11, Almaty-2 11:09 the next morning (14 h 58 min, coupe from 15,084 ₸, about $34).

In Almaty, go to Almaty-2. KTZ's notice says boarding and alighting at Almaty-1 have been suspended since 15 July 2026 while the station is rebuilt. KTZ's booking search still lists a few trains at Almaty-1, among them 034 and 042 from Turkestan on 16 October, and the notice does not name them. If your ticket says Almaty-1, call KTZ's information line, 1433, before you travel. The city itself is on Almaty.

Trains inside Uzbekistan: which page covers which

Uzbekistan has the region's most useful network for visitors: high-speed Afrosiyob trains, the Tashkent–Khiva electric train and night trains to the far west. Tickets go on sale 60 days ahead at 10:00 on eticket.uzrailpass.uz. Each route has its own page on our site.

One change is coming. Gazeta.uz reported on 19 September 2026 that a Tashkent–Nukus high-speed service is due from March 2027, cutting the trip from 16 hours to 7. Nothing is on sale yet. The city and the Savitsky Museum are on Nukus.

Turkmenistan and China: no cross-border passenger trains

Neither has a passenger train from Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan. KTZ's list of international trains has none to Turkmenistan or China, and the Uzbek timetable page lists no train across the Turkmen border.

Uzbek domestic trains do run to two border towns: 058 from Tashkent South to Shavat in Khorezm on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, and 072 to Alat in the Bukhara region on even dates (timetable page, 24 September 2026). From there you cross by road. Turkmenistan needs a visa arranged in advance, through an invitation letter or a tour; the Central Asia overview has the outline, and our five-country comparison the detail.

For China, the Almaty–Urumqi passenger train has been suspended since March 2020, Kazakhstan's transport ministry told Tengrinews in October 2024, and it is not on KTZ's 2026 list. KTZ's own trains stop at Dostyk, on the Kazakh side of the border. The China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway, 532 km long, has been under construction since 27 December 2024 and was about 17% complete in August 2026, according to Gazeta.uz.

How do you book cross-border tickets?

On the railway's own site where one sells the train, and at a station for the Dushanbe train. KTZ opens sales 45 days ahead at 07:00 Astana time, which is also Tashkent time. Uzbek Railways opens sales 60 days ahead at 10:00 at the origin station.

KTZ's rules say payment runs through Halyk Bank's page and accepts Visa and Mastercard cards open for internet payments; they say nothing about cards issued abroad. The Uzbek site lists Visa and Mastercard among its payment options. We stopped before paying on both sites, so we have not tested a foreign card. If a payment fails, call Uzbek Railways on 1005 or KTZ on 1433.

Is there a Silk Road train tour?

Yes. Tour companies run their own trains, sold as packages with guides and hotels. We do not sell them and cannot compare them; here is what they are, from their operators and the local press.

• Orient Silk Road Express: run by O‘ztemiryo‘lyo‘lovchi, the Uzbek passenger rail company, with the German tour operator Lernidee Erlebnisreisen. The first 2026 trip left Tashkent on 30 March with 82 tourists from 11 countries, 12 trips were planned for the year, and the Uzbek route covers Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva (Yuz.uz and UzDaily, 31 March 2026).
• Golden Eagle Silk Road Express: a 22-day journey from Beijing to Tashkent sold by Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, with one 2026 departure, 21 September to 12 October (Time Out, 30 December 2025). The operator's page says it last ran in the region in April 2019.
• Jibek Joly: a tourist train organised by Kazakhstan's tourism ministry with KTZ. Its March 2026 trip ran Almaty–Turkestan–Samarkand–Dushanbe–Tashkent–Almaty over six days, 20–25 March (Kazinform, 12 March 2026). Trips are announced one at a time.

What goes wrong on trains in Central Asia?

Frequency and seats cause more trouble than the trains themselves. Plan around these.

• Weekly trains leave no slack. Miss Tuesday's 302 to Dushanbe or a Wednesday 318 to Bishkek and the next one is days away.
• Sell-outs. On 24 September, Nukus–Beyneu had no free berths from 29 September to 31 October, and only 6 of 19 westbound Tashkent–Khiva departures up to 16 October had seats. Seats come back when unpaid orders expire, so search again.
• The ticket date is the departure date. A train leaving at 00:13 or 00:32 is printed with the next day's date: board the evening before.
• Stations. Almaty-1 is closed to passengers; Tashkent Central and Tashkent South are different stations.
• Border checks at night. On the Nukus–Beyneu train a February 2026 traveller reported the Uzbek exit check at about 3–6 am and the Kazakh entry check at about 7–9 am. We have no report for the Talgo or train 302.
• Bicycles. On 2 September 2026 two foreign cyclists with tickets were refused boarding at Beyneu because of their bikes, NewTimes.kz reported.
• Slow Kazakh trains in summer. In July 2026 KTZ blamed late Talgos on rail temperatures of 58–62 °C and station works (Qumash). Do not book a flight for the morning you arrive.
