Central Asia in 2 weeks: Khiva to Issyk-Kul via Fergana

What do two weeks from Khiva to Issyk-Kul look like?

Fly into Tashkent, take the train west to Khiva, then work east through Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent into the Fergana Valley. On day 10 you walk across the border at Dostuk into Osh, fly to Bishkek the next morning, and spend the last days on Issyk-Kul and in Karakol before flying home from Bishkek. That is 14 calendar days and 13 nights, ending in Kyrgyzstan without a final return to Uzbekistan.

The trains and flights in the table are the ones we would book, found in the railway's booking search and on Yandex Timetables on 24 September 2026 for October dates. Check them for your own dates before paying for rooms.

Why travel one way, and why start in Khiva?

Because the fast train does the long haul first. The Jaloliddin Manguberdi leaves Tashkent at 07:00 and reaches Khiva at 14:42, and from Khiva every leg runs east. Ending in Khiva instead would cost a day at the end, because the return train takes 7 h 56 min. Our Tashkent–Khiva train guide has the timetable and the alternatives.

One way also means an open-jaw air ticket, into Tashkent and home from Bishkek, so you do not need to return to Uzbekistan at the end.

Expect frequent travel and a hotel change on four of the last six nights. For three Uzbek cities and a one-hour flight between the capitals, take our 12-day Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan itinerary. If the mountains matter more, the 8-day Kyrgyzstan route adds a night at Altyn-Arashan.

How does each leg work, and what do the tickets cost?

Trains cover the main city-to-city journeys in Uzbekistan, with road travel through the Fergana Valley; in Kyrgyzstan you fly once and drive the rest. Fares are what the railway's booking search showed on 24 September 2026 for October dates, with dollars at that day's Central Bank rate (11,814.05 UZS). Kyrgyz road transport is sold by the seat or the car, so there we give distances.

Book in this order: the international tickets into Tashkent and out of Bishkek; the Tashkent–Khiva train on the day its sales open; the other trains as each date opens; the Osh–Bishkek flight; then hotels and the Kyrgyz car. The train booking guide explains the railway's site.

Days 1–8: Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand

Day 1. Land in Tashkent and sleep near Tashkent-Markaziy (Central) station, where the Khiva train leaves at 07:00. Arriving at Tashkent airport covers transfers, cash and SIM cards.

Days 2–3, Khiva. The train arrives at 14:42, leaving the afternoon for a first walk inside the walls. Day 3 is for Ichan-Kala itself: the Kunya-Ark fortress, which the national tourism site lists among the main sights, and the courtyards of the Tosh-Hovli palace. Days 4–5, Bukhara. The 07:10 train reaches Buxoro-1 station, in Kogon outside the city, at 10:38; the Bukhara–Khiva guide covers the later 707. Spend the afternoon at Lyabi Hauz, where the Kukeldash and Nadir Divanbegi madrasahs and a khanqah face the pool. Day 5 is for Poi Kalon (the Kalon minaret, its mosque and the Mir-i-Arab madrasah), the trading domes and the Ark. See the Bukhara guide.

Days 6–7, Samarkand. Train 751 arrives at 12:41, in time for Gur-e Amir. Day 7 is for Registan, the square of three madrasahs (Ulugh Beg, Sherdor and Tilla-Kori), and the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis. See the Samarkand guide and the Samarkand–Bukhara train guide.

Day 8. Keep the morning in Samarkand and take an afternoon train back to Tashkent. The Tashkent–Samarkand guide lists the Afrosiyob departures; if they are sold out, train 751 at 12:51 or the Sharq at 19:23 still gets you there.

Days 9–10: can you reach the valley and Osh without a Tashkent night?

Not in a way we would plan around, so the route keeps the day-8 night in Tashkent. From 1 October train 730 leaves Tashkent at 07:20, before any train from Samarkand arrives. The only same-day link we found is a morning train to Tashkent, then train 732 at 17:50, reaching Margilan at 23:06; in the week we searched (12–18 October) it ran Wednesday to Saturday only. Night train 126 leaves Samarkand at 01:30 and reaches Margilan at 12:03. Both avoid a night in Tashkent, but mean a late arrival or an overnight departure.

Day 9. Get off train 730 at Kokand at 10:26. Our Fergana Valley itinerary plans the day: Khudoyar Khan's palace and the Jome mosque in Kokand, a pottery visit in Rishton on the way east, and the night in Margilan or Fergana city. You need a car and driver from Kokand station, and the Rishton host booked in advance.

Day 10. Start with silk in Margilan: the Yodgorlik factory, founded in 1972, makes khan-atlas and adras by hand. Then go to Andijan by car or on train 126 (Margilan 12:09 → Andijan 12:59) and on to the border. Caravanistan (updated 20 July 2026) gives Dostuk as open 24/7 with a lunch break from 13:15 to 13:45, and Andijan–Osh minibuses taking about 2 hours, every 20 minutes. You walk through both posts with your bags; Uzbek customs said in 2018 that an orderly queue takes about 15 minutes, but that market days in Qorasuv bring crowds.

Clocks go forward an hour at the border (Kyrgyzstan is on UTC+6). Spend the evening in Osh on Sulaiman-Too, the mountain over the city on UNESCO's World Heritage list. Our Tashkent to Bishkek guide has more on the crossing.

Days 11–14: Osh to Bishkek, Issyk-Kul and Karakol

Day 11. Take a morning flight from Osh: on 24 September Yandex Timetables listed Aero Nomad at 07:15 (arriving 08:15) and Sky FRU at 09:10 (arriving 09:50), daily to 24 October. From Manas airport, go straight to the north shore, about 262 km through the Boom gorge: up to 3.5 hours by car and up to 5 by minibus, according to the local site issykkul.biz. Lake buses leave from the Bishkek bus station at Alma-Atinskaya 1/1; the old Western station has closed, Bishkek city hall says.

Days 11–12, Issyk-Kul. Stay in one place around Cholpon-Ata or Tamchy so day 12 has no packing; the Issyk-Kul guide compares the shores. For swimming, the Bishkek booking platform Carva (May 2026) names the second half of July, August and early September.

Day 13, Karakol. Drive along the shore to Karakol; Destination Karakol, the local tourism office, puts the airport near Cholpon-Ata about 2.5 hours from Karakol by road. Spend the afternoon at the wooden Dungan mosque, built in 1907–1910 for the town's Dungan community, the wooden Holy Trinity cathedral and the bazaar. The Karakol guide plans the visit.

Day 14. Drive back to Bishkek: 400 km and 6–7 hours, Destination Karakol says. Many westbound flights from Manas leave in the small hours; on 24 September most Istanbul departures listed left between 02:30 and 05:55, with later ones at 08:20 and 10:10. If your flight leaves earlier on day 14, sleep night 13 in Bishkek instead (see the variants).

Which entry rules apply in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan?

Uzbekistan. Citizens of the listed countries get 30 days without a visa, counted from the moment they cross the border, the foreign ministry says; US citizens have been on the list since 1 January 2026 under decree PF-203. Hotels register foreign guests; the law gives three working days from entry. Details are in our visa and registration guide.

Kyrgyzstan. Citizens of 55 listed countries may stay up to 30 days in each 60-day period without a visa (regulation No. 541, edition of 7 September 2026). Under resolution No. 600, in force since 23 September 2026, they need no registration within those 30 days. Our Kyrgyzstan visa and entry guide has the full rules.

The route crosses once, so no Uzbek re-entry question arises. Indian travellers: decree PF-180 grants 30 days only with a valid multiple-entry visa from a listed country and a flight ticket home or to a third country. You leave Uzbekistan by land, so ask an Uzbek consulate whether your flight from Bishkek meets that condition, or use the e-visa.

When should you go, and in which direction?

The cities and the mountains suit different months, and the direction of travel is how this route deals with that. From late May to mid-June, go west to east: the cities first, the lake last. In September, run the route in reverse: Issyk-Kul and Karakol early in the month, the cities in the cooler second half. Our guide to when to go to Uzbekistan has the month-by-month detail.

The numbers behind that: Uzhydromet, the Uzbek weather service, gives 28–31 °C by day in the second half of May, with spells of 34–37 °C in almost every May, and 26–29 °C in the second half of September. July 2026 set station records of 46.9 °C in Bukhara and 43.6 °C in Samarkand. Destination Karakol calls June to September the summer season; its June snow warning is for passes above 3,500 m, far above this route.

How does the route work in the other direction?

Fly into Bishkek, do Karakol and the lake first, fly from Bishkek to Osh, cross into Uzbekistan at Dostuk and take the trains west to Khiva. The nights stay the same; four legs change.

   Bishkek to Osh

   Morning flights listed on 24 September: Aero Nomad at 05:15 and 08:00, Sky FRU at 07:25, daily to 24 October.

   Dostuk into Uzbekistan

   Your 30 Uzbek days start at the crossing. Train 729 leaves Margilan at 16:13 and reaches Tashkent at 19:55.

   West to Khiva

   Train 752 leaves Bukhara at 11:14 and reaches Khiva at 14:42 (not on Sundays); train 706 leaves at 15:45 and arrives at 20:25 (not on Mondays).

   Home from Khiva

   Train 751 leaves Khiva at 07:10 for Tashkent (arriving 15:06), except on Mondays; otherwise fly from Urgench. Add a Tashkent night unless your flight home leaves that evening.

How can you shorten, stretch or change it?

Adjust your overnight stops to change the pace.

What goes wrong on this route?

Mostly timing: trains that sell out, unpredictable border queues, and long road days at the end.

• The Khiva train: train 752 had seats on one of the four mid-October dates we checked. Book the day sales open.
• Afrosiyob: daytime trains between Bukhara, Samarkand and Tashkent showed no seats on most October dates; the slower Sharq and Nasaf trains still had some.
• Dostuk: the Uzbek Customs list of border posts gives it as open round the clock, and Caravanistan adds a lunch break. Cross in daylight, and avoid Qorasuv market days if you can.
• Winter flights: the morning Osh–Bishkek flights were listed only to 24 October.
• Pace: frequent travel, single nights in the valley and in Osh, and a 6–7 hour drive on the last day. No mountain night unless you add one.
• The Kyrgyz 30 days in each 60 add up across visits; count any recent days there.
• Not verified: train 732's weekdays beyond 12–18 October, and flights at Karakol's airport, which Destination Karakol says now has domestic flights, mainly from Bishkek. We found no timetable, so this page keeps the road.
