Almaty to Bishkek: bus, taxi, flights and the Korday border

Bus, shared taxi, private car or plane: which suits you?

For most travellers, the bus is the simplest option: five departures a day, a published fare and one border, crossed on foot. A private car costs more but leaves when you want and goes door to door. Flying saves little time once you add the two airports, and the cheapest fare we saw was about 15 times the bus fare (our calculation from the fares below).

How does the Sayran bus to Bishkek work?

Buy a seat on route 701 at Sayran bus station, 294 Tole Bi Street, and ride straight through to Bishkek. The station's ticket site lists five daily departures, at 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 18:00 Almaty time. For every travel date we checked, from 25 September to 15 October 2026, the fare was 3,425 ₸ before the e-ticket service fee. Sayran: Almaty–Bishkek timetable

The route page gives about 4 hours for 236 km. On 24 September all five departures were run by the carrier Nurdan-Tur, on Setra and Neoplan coaches with Kyrgyz plates. You pick seats on a seat map and can buy up to six in one order. The station's enquiry line is +7 727 396-70-63; e-ticket help is on WhatsApp at +7 776 017 8222 (messages only). Sayran: route 701

Bishkek is an hour ahead, so the 08:00 bus is due at about 13:00 Bishkek time if the border is quick (our calculation from the 4-hour timetable). Two sources put the whole trip at about 5 hours: WE Project, a Bishkek media outlet, in March 2026, and Caravanistan's border page, updated in February 2026.

Going back, buses leave Bishkek's main bus station at 1/1 Alma-Atinskaya Street. Bishkek City Hall lists Almaty among the station's regular international routes (30 April 2026), and WE Project reported departures every two hours from 08:00 to 18:00, except 16:00, for about 600 som. On 24 September the Kyrgyz booking site Tezket showed online sales for Bishkek–Almaty suspended until October 2026, with tickets sold at the station. How much is a taxi or private transfer?

According to the prices and dates below, hiring a whole car costs roughly ten times as much as one bus ticket. A seat in a shared car costs about three times as much (our calculation). None of them is an official tariff: they are what local services and media published, so agree the price in tenge before you set off.

WE Project reported in March 2026 that a car for the Bishkek–Almaty trip cost 35,000–45,000 ₸ (6,500–8,500 som), and a seat with other passengers about 9,000–11,000 ₸ (1,600–2,000 som) through transfer services such as easytransfer.kg; it also points to Telegram channels for shared rides. AlaGo, an Almaty transfer company, charges from 90,000 ₸ for its whole 13-seat Toyota Hiace one way, pickup and drop-off at your addresses included (page updated 7 September 2026). Caravanistan says shared taxis run the route as well as buses. We found no dated source for where they wait in Almaty or what a seat costs there. If you want a shared car rather than the bus, we would book it through a service before your travel date. Caravanistan: Kazakhstan border crossings

What happens at the Korday / Ak-Zhol border?

You get out, walk through the Kazakh and then the Kyrgyz controls with all your bags, and get back in on the Kyrgyz side, while the vehicle crosses separately. Korday is the Kazakh post and Ak-Zhol the Kyrgyz one; they stand next to each other, and central Bishkek is about half an hour beyond, according to AlaGo.

The Kyrgyz Border Service lists the Ak-Zhol post as open 24/7 (read 24 September 2026), as Caravanistan also reports. The rebuilt checkpoint reopened on 2 April 2021 with room for 2,500 cars and 25,000 people a day, up from 1,000 cars and 6,000 people, Sputnik Kazakhstan reported. AlaGo puts the usual crossing at 20–40 minutes, and an hour or more on Friday evenings, at weekends and on holidays. On 2 May 2026, in the May holidays, Kaktus.media reported a queue several hundred metres long at the post. Caravanistan says there is currency exchange on both sides and a canteen on the Kyrgyz side.    Get off at Korday with all your luggage

   Take your passport and all your luggage. On the bus, the driver waits on the far side until the last passenger is through.

   Show the passport you will use in Kyrgyzstan, and a printed e-visa if your nationality needs one. Ak-Zhol is on the Kyrgyz foreign ministry's list of posts that accept e-visas.

   Find your bus or car on the Kyrgyz side. Caravanistan says many buses and taxis also wait there for central Bishkek and the Dordoi market, if you need onward transport.

   Coming from Bishkek

   The order is reversed: Kyrgyz exit at Ak-Zhol, then Kazakh entry at Korday, where Kazakhstan's entry rules apply.

What documents do you need, and does QazETA apply?

Your passport, plus a Kyrgyz e-visa only if your nationality is not visa-free. Kyrgyzstan lets citizens of 55 listed countries, including the UK, the US and most EU states, stay up to 30 days in each 60-day period (regulation No. 541, edition of 7 September 2026). Returning to Almaty means entering Kazakhstan again. Kazakhstan counts visa-free days across all your visits, up to 90 in each 180, so the days before and after a Bishkek side trip add up. The limits for your passport are in Kazakhstan entry rules. Rules No. 148 on Adilet

QazETA, Kazakhstan's electronic travel authorisation, was not required on 24 September 2026. On 6 September Kazakhstan's Interior Ministry said the system is a pilot, that applying is voluntary and free, and that not having it is no reason to refuse entry. A start date of 30 November 2026 for road borders with Kyrgyzstan and Russia has circulated in the media; it came from a Serbian foreign-ministry notice that no longer gives it, and Kazakhstan has not confirmed it. On 16 September the Kazakh foreign ministry's spokesman said the procedure would be set by the end of 2026 or early 2027. We follow the Interior Ministry. Is it worth flying from Almaty to Bishkek?

Only if you are connecting to a flight at Manas or want to avoid a holiday border queue. Air Astana is the only airline listed on the route, with 50 minutes to an hour in the air, but you add the ride to Almaty airport, check-in and the ride in from Manas. WE Project put the whole journey at about three to four hours.

On Yandex Schedules, an aggregator, fares started at 50,884 ₸ (about $114) from Almaty and 54,827 ₸ from Bishkek on 24 September 2026. The clock times look odd because of the time change: the 12:35 departure lands at 14:30 Bishkek time after 55 minutes. Is there a train from Almaty to Bishkek?

No. Kazakhstan Railways' booking search for 15 October 2026 found no direct train from Almaty to Bishkek. It offered only trips with a change in Petropavlovsk, in northern Kazakhstan, taking 3 days 10 hours to 4 days, from 60,196 ₸. Yandex Schedules also finds no direct train between the two cities. Rail is useful on the way to Almaty, not beyond it: the daily Talgo from Tashkent is covered in Tashkent to Almaty. If you start in Tashkent and only want Bishkek, Tashkent to Bishkek compares the direct options. The rest of the regional rail network is in Central Asia by train.

What changes when you cross: time and money

Put your watch forward one hour. Kazakhstan has used a single time zone, UTC+5, since 1 March 2024, and Bishkek is on UTC+6, as the local arrival times of the flights show. Bus departures from Sayran are in Almaty time. Kazakh Ministry of Trade and Integration: time zone

Kyrgyzstan uses the som, not the tenge. Caravanistan reports currency exchange on both sides of the border, so you can change leftover tenge there or in Bishkek. Going to Karakol instead? The Karkara crossing

If Karakol is your goal, there is a second crossing east of Almaty: Kegen on the Kazakh side, Karkara on the Kyrgyz side. It keeps daytime hours and does not take Kyrgyz e-visas, so check both before you plan around it.

On 22 September 2026 the deputy head of Kyrgyzstan's border service told parliament that the checkpoint is open 09:00–20:00, hours set by the Kazakh side (K-News). Caravanistan says it is open around the clock; we follow the border service. Karkara is not on the Kyrgyz foreign ministry's list of posts that accept e-visas. What goes wrong on this route?

Queues and unpublished details are the main problems. None of them should stop the trip, but they can cost you hours.

• Holiday queues: Kaktus.media reported a queue several hundred metres long at Ak-Zhol–Korday on 2 May 2026. Avoid Kyrgyz and Kazakh holiday weekends, or leave on the first bus.
• Border hours: the Kyrgyz Border Service lists Ak-Zhol as open 24/7 (checked 24 September 2026); we found no published hours from the Kazakh authorities for Korday. The last bus leaves Almaty at 18:00, so this matters mainly for a late crossing by car.
• Losing the bus: the bus crosses empty and waits on the Kyrgyz side. Keep the Kyrgyz helpline, +996 500 26 00 66, on your phone.
• Buying in Bishkek: Tezket's online sales for Bishkek–Almaty were suspended until October 2026, so buy the return at the main bus station.
• QazETA: voluntary now. A November date for road borders is circulating but unconfirmed by Kazakhstan; check qazeta.kz before a crossing from mid-November.
• Winter flights: the schedule changes on 25 October, and some dates were only partly loaded on 24 September.
• What we could not verify: where shared taxis wait in Almaty and what a seat costs there, whether the fare at Sayran's ticket desk differs from the website, whether the website takes foreign cards, and the exact stop in Bishkek where bus 701 ends (the station lists only «Bishkek»).
