Termez: Buddhist sites, Afghan border and how to get there

Is Termez safe to visit? What four governments say

Termez is open to tourists, but here the government advisories cover the area you will actually be in. Canada advises against all travel within 5 km of the Afghan border, and most of what visitors come to see lies inside that belt (next section). The UK, US and Germany do not advise against travel to Uzbekistan. We read each advisory on 24 September 2026; the rows match our Uzbekistan safety guide.

Canada adds that the land border has been closed since the Taliban takeover in 2021, that the area is heavily guarded with military checkpoints, and that shelling from Afghanistan damaged several buildings in Termez in 2022. The FCDO reports rockets fired from Afghanistan into southern Uzbekistan in April 2022, claimed by Islamic State Khorasan Province. The US level comes from the State Department's data feed, because its web page blocks automated reading: open the State Department page before you rely on it.

Which Termez sites lie within 5 km of the border?

Most of them. We measured the straight-line distance from each site to the Uzbekistan–Afghanistan border line in OpenStreetMap. These are our own calculations, not official figures. They show that Canada's belt covers the Buddhist sites, the Hakim at-Termizi complex, Kampyr Tepa and the southern streets of the city itself, which lie about 4 km from the line.

Sultan Saodat and Kyrk Kyz are outside the belt, and the Archaeological Museum sits right on its edge. If you are Canadian, or your insurer follows your government's advice, use this table to identify which sights fall within the area covered by that advice.

What are the Buddhist sites, and what do they cost?

Three sites on the edge of Old Termez date from the Kushan period, when Termez was a Buddhist centre: Fayaz Tepa, Kara Tepa and the Zurmala stupa. We would see them in one morning with a guide, because Kara Tepa needs one anyway. The ticket prices below come from one local travel guide dated 17 July 2026, not from a published tariff.

• Fayaz Tepa. A vihara-type Buddhist monastery of the 1st–3rd centuries AD in the north-west of the Old Termez ruins. Unusually, its stupa stands outside the courtyard, facing the sanctuary (regional government, Uzbek). Excavation followed the find of a Buddha statue in 1968, and the site is named after R. F. Fayazov, director of the local museum, who pushed for its study (Uzbekistan Travel, Uzbek). The aviasales.uz guide gives about 60,000 som (≈ $5) for a joint ticket with Kara Tepa, daily 08:00–18:00.
• Kara Tepa. A complex of Buddhist cave temples in the north-east of Old Termez. Building began in the 1st century AD, and most of the temples date from its peak in the 2nd–3rd centuries (regional government, same post). The July 2026 guide says it lies on the grounds of a border-patrol base, which is why it needs a permit.
• Zurmala stupa. A Kushan-era stupa south-east of the city, thought to date from the 1st–2nd centuries AD and now a tall clay mass standing in a field. The July 2026 guide lists it as free and open at all hours.

Do I need a permit to visit Kara Tepa?

Plan on yes: book a licensed local guide and let them request permission from the border guards before your visit. The sources disagree, and the difference changes how you plan:

• Permit through a guide (17 July 2026). The Termez guide on aviasales.uz by Malikakhon Sultonova says there is no free access: you need a special permit, which a certified local guide obtains by sending a request to the border guards in advance. This is the newest source, and this page follows it.
• Permit needed (20 May 2025). Caravanistan's Termez guide, last updated on that date, says you need a special permit for Kara Tepa.
• Pay at the gate (25 May 2024). A traveller on the Caravanistan forum wrote that Kara Tepa was open to general tourists for 40,000 som paid to the guard at Fayaz Tepa. It is the oldest of the three reports.
• UK government (19 March 2026). Many tourist sites close to the border need the permission of the local authorities or an organised tour group.

Hakim at-Termizi, Sultan Saodat, Kyrk Kyz and the museum

None of the sources we read mentions a permit for these sites. We would see the museum first, so the finds make sense when you stand at the ruins.

• Hakim at-Termizi complex. The mausoleum of Abu Abdullah al-Hakim at-Termizi, a 9th-century scholar known locally as Termez-ota, with a carved marble tombstone, a later Friday mosque and cave cells (chillakhona) on the grounds (Uzbekistan Travel, Uzbek). It stands about 600 m from the border by our measurement. The July 2026 guide lists free entry, Monday to Friday 09:00–18:00. We found no official hours to confirm the weekday-only listing, so if your only Termez day is a Saturday or Sunday, ask your guide or the 1173 tourist line.
• Sultan Saodat. A family necropolis of the Termez sayyids, who trace their descent to the Prophet, about 3 km from the city on the bank of the Surkhandarya river. Tombs and mosques of different centuries stand along one long courtyard, faced with patterned fired brick (Uzbekistan Travel, Uzbek). The July 2026 guide lists free entry with the same Monday–Friday hours.
• Kyrk Kyz. A square mud-brick building of the 9th–10th centuries, rebuilt several times up to the 14th. Its name, "forty girls", comes from the legend of Princess Guloyim and her forty warrior companions (Uzbekistan Travel). Free, daylight hours (July 2026 guide).
• Termez Archaeological Museum. Opened in 2001 for the city's 2,500th anniversary, with more than 40,000 finds in 10 halls (Uzbekistan Travel, Uzbek). The July 2026 guide gives 25,000–30,000 som (≈ $2–3), daily 09:00–18:00, at At-Termizi street 29A.
• Kampyr Tepa. The ruins of a fortified river port on the Amu Darya, about 30 km from Termez, which archaeologists identified in 2018 as Alexandria on the Oxus (Uzbekistan Travel). It is 3.6 km from the border by our measurement, so the Canadian belt applies. Free, 08:00–18:00 (July 2026 guide); allow half a day with the drive.

How do I get to Termez by train?

Take the overnight train. No. 080 leaves Tashkent every evening at 21:13 and reaches Termez at 11:17. A second train, No. 129 from Andijan, runs on most days. We read both in the Uzbek railway booking search on 24 September 2026 for departures from 5 to 14 October 2026; both showed fares and available seats online, and our booking guide explains how to buy.

From Samarkand the same trains pass in the middle of the night: 080 leaves at 01:22 and still gets you to Termez before noon. There was no direct train from Bukhara in the booking search for 5–11 October, so from Bukhara you either travel to Samarkand first or go by road.

Track works can cancel a run. On 1 June 2026 the operator announced that trains 80/82, 129 and 130 would each lose one run on 19–20 June for track repairs between Gumbaz and Ulus (operator's Telegram, Uzbek). That channel is where such notices appear.

Flying, driving, and going on to Tajikistan

The flight from Tashkent takes about 1 h 25 min. Gazeta.uz reported 23 flights a week on Tashkent–Termez under the schedule in force on 24 May 2026 (Uzbek). The aviasales.uz route page showed 29 a week on 24 September 2026, with Uzbekistan Airways and Qanot Sharq among the carriers and fares from 387,346 som (≈ $33).

By road, Termez is at the southern end of the drive from Samarkand through Shahrisabz or Karshi. We found no dated shared-taxi fare for the route, so we give none; agree the price of a car and driver before you set off.

To Tajikistan, the weekly train 302 from Samarkand to Dushanbe does not call at Termez: it runs via Karshi, Kumkurgan and Denau and crosses the border at Sariosiyo. Photos, passports and the Friendship Bridge

Keep your camera away from anything military and from the river fence. The UK says you risk arrest if you approach the fence or photograph military infrastructure or personnel in the neutral zone along the Amudarya.

• What not to photograph. The July 2026 aviasales.uz guide names the Termez–Hairatan bridge, border towers and military equipment; it says monuments and city streets are fine to photograph.
• Carry your original passport. The same guide says patrol police or border guards may check documents anywhere in the city or region. The FCDO says carrying your passport is required throughout Uzbekistan (FCDO).
• Checkpoints. Canada says the Uzbek military has set up several checkpoints in the border area. At the river sites, we suggest staying with your guide and following instructions.
• The Friendship Bridge. The FCDO says the bridge remains officially closed to foreigners, and Germany says the Termez (Hairatan) crossing is closed. Do not approach or photograph it.

How many days, and where should I stay?

One hotel night between two night trains is enough for the main sites. Arrive on train 080 at 11:17 and see the museum, Kyrk Kyz and Sultan Saodat that afternoon. Spend the next morning at the river sites with your guide, and take train 080 north at 19:14. That is our plan, built on the timetable above; a second night gives Kampyr Tepa its half day.

The July 2026 guide suggests staying in the city centre and taking taxis to the sites. It quoted a double room at a central hotel near the Archaeological Museum at about $45–55 a night; that is a third-party price from July 2026, not ours. When should you go to Termez?

April to May, or October. Over the long-term record, the Termez area averages 16 days of 40°C or more in July, the highest number Uzhydromet gives for any area of Uzbekistan, and the July mean maximum in the south is 38–40°C (Uzhydromet, Uzbek). How to travel in the heat: Uzbekistan in summer.

The Buddhist sites and Kampyr Tepa are open ruins with little shade. In the warm months we would reach them when they open at 08:00 and keep the midday hours for the museum. The local guide also warns of strong dusty winds from the south, called the "afganets"; on those days, glasses and a mask help. For the rest of the country by month, see when to visit Uzbekistan.

What goes wrong in Termez?

Most problems come from the border, the timetable or the heat. Plan around these:

• Insurance and advisories. Canada's "avoid all travel" belt covers most sights. If your policy excludes such areas, you may be travelling uninsured there.
• No Kara Tepa permit. If the guide cannot get permission for your date, Fayaz Tepa and Zurmala are next door and need no permit in any source we read.
• Night-time trains. From Samarkand, train 080 leaves at 01:22; going back, it reaches Samarkand at 04:56. The 2-berth SV car appeared only on some dates, with 1–10 berths free in our scan.
• Heat. Sixteen days of 40°C or more in an average July (Uzhydromet). In summer, plan the ruins for the early morning.
• Hours and prices. The weekday-only hours for Hakim at-Termizi and Sultan Saodat, and every ticket price on this page, come from one local guide, not from an official tariff or opening-hours page.
• Cancelled runs. Track works cancelled Termez trains on 19–20 June 2026. Check the operator's Telegram channel in the week before you travel.
